One dead, another injured in elephant attack in Keonjhar
The deceased has been identified as Biranchi Jena (40), a native of Dharmasala in Jajpur district. The injured, also named Biranchi Jena (60) from Badachana area, was initially treated at Patna community health centre before being shifted to Keonjhar district headquarters hospital in critical condition.
The victims, both masons, were sleeping in a tent at the construction site of a bridge over Pichhulabeda canal when the incident occurred.
According to eyewitnesses, the tusker suddenly charged at the tent, crushing it while two workers managed to flee.
"The family of the deceased will receive Rs 10 lakh compensation as per govt rule," said Bana Bihari Sardar, forest range officer of Patna range.
The tusker is currently camping in Atei reserve forest near Ghatagaon range. Last week, the same elephant had damaged a motorcycle near Draupadi hill road even as the rider escaped unhurt.

4 kidnappers held, man rescued in Pratapgarh
1 2 Prayagraj: With the arrest of four kidnappers, Pratapgarh police on Sunday claimed to have solved abduction case of a 40-year-old man who was allegedly kidnapped by a group of five miscreants from Narayanpur Bhusundi village under the limits of Kandhai police station on Saturday. The arrested kidnappers, identified as Anwar (38), Ram Prakash (30), Hari Prasad Saroj (40), and Shiv Bahadur Mishra (30), are residents of Kandhai (Pratapgarh) and Sultanpur, respectively. Deputy SP (Patti) Manoj Kumar Singh told TOI that the wife of the victim approached Kandhai police on Saturday and claimed that her husband, Dalpati Verma, was missing since Saturday morning. She also informed police that her son received a call from an unidentified caller seeking Rs 5 lakh ransom to release her husband. Following the incident, an FIR under section 140 (1) of BNS was registered, and senior cops constituted three police teams to crack the compiling CCTV analysis and surveillance, the police managed to arrest four of the kidnappers and rescued the victim. Police also recovered an SUV, two bikes, one country pistol of 0.315 bore along with two live cartridges, mobiles, SIM cards, and other valuables from their possession. The accused confessed to the police that they kidnapped Dalpati under a planned conspiracy and called him from his house on the pretext of seeing land for purchase. As one of the prime accused was well known to the victim, he managed to get the victim from his house and moved towards Chanda Patti Road, where his accomplices were waiting. The kidnappers first took the victim to Amargarh, thrashed him, and asked him to call his neighbour to seek ransom. Police said that all the accused had a criminal background as they were operating a thug gang. They kidnapped the victim to clear their debt worth Rs 5 lakh.

Hemant flags hacking of JMM's X account
1 2 Ranchi: JMM president and chief minister Hemant Soren on Sunday said the official X account of his party has been hacked, prompting him to order a police investigation into it. Apart from expressing concern over the breach, the chief minister appealed to the Elon Musk-owned social media giant to take cognisance of the matter. Party members said at 12:12 am on Sunday, the hackers posted a suspicious link along with an image of a rodent on the JMM's X account, which was immediately flagged by Hemant on his social media platform. No other activity related to hacking was detected on the account thereafter. Taking to X, Hemant, who is in Delhi to attend to his ailing father Shibu Soren, wrote, "The official X handle of JMM @JmmJharkhand has been hacked by anti-social elements. @JharkhandPolice please take cognisance of this matter and investigate it promptly. @XCorpIndia please take cognisance of this matter. @GlobalAffairs" In the recent past, a series of cyber attacks have also targeted social media accounts of politicians, top-ranked bureaucrats, political parties and websites of prominent govt organisations in Jharkhand, exposing the growing vulnerability of digital platforms. He informed that the attacks are launched at critical and sensitive infrastructure, including water treatment and energy plants, and hospitals to disrupt normal activities and create chaos. "Apart from information gathering, many attacks are orchestrated for financial fraud and duping people. The newest form of financial fraud that has been emerging is that Indian nationals are being trafficked to Cambodia via Thailand and employed in scam centres run by India's enemy countries to dupe Indian citizens," Kumar added. As the menace is growing rapidly, law-enforcing agencies have also been taking a proactive stance against it. On July 5, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) busted an organised Chinese cybercrime network, arresting seven individuals involved in illegal investment scams and digital arrests. Police sources said the modus operandi of the hackers and their sponsors was to send malicious apps to smartphones linked with bank accounts. "Once the phone owner installed the apps, they automatically transmit OTPs and all bank alerts sent to the particular phone to servers controlled from China. This enabled the Chinese hackers to gain remote access to the Indian bank accounts which were then used to transfer the defrauded money to offshore accounts," the source added.

Occupancy certificates without STPs? High Court seeks report on Lotus Boulevard
Noida: Allahabad High Court has asked Noida Authority to submit a detailed affidavit explaining how occupancy certificates (OCs) were granted to Lotus Boulevard project despite allegations of incomplete sewage treatment infrastructure. The order, issued on July 7, came in response to a petition filed by the society's apartment owners' association, which claimed that the mandatory sewage treatment plants (STPs) were not fully functional when the certificates were issued. The bench of Justices Mahesh Chandra Tripathi and Vinod Diwakar has asked the Authority CEO to file the affidavit by the next date of hearing on July 16. The report must clarify several issues, such as the number of STPs that were required to be built at the time occupancy certificates were issued in 2012 and 2016. It should also provide details of each of these STPs constructed by the builder, including the dates when they were handed over and the stages of completion before the certificates were granted. This would ascertain if the developer — Granite Gate Properties — had adhered to the building bylaws and environmental guidelines. It should also mention any remedial measures the Authority or the resolution professional initiated to rectify deficiencies, if any, in the STP network. The AOA also alleged that several Authority officials — in collusion with the builder — issued occupancy certificates for multiple towers without ensuring the construction of four mandatory STPs. According to the petition, only "one and a half STPs were partly built" when the certificates were issued — first for towers 1-7 in Aug 2012, and later for towers 8-10, 12, 12A, and 14-27 in March 2016. The Authority has denied these allegations, claiming that all approvals were granted in compliance with building bylaws and environmental norms. The legal scrutiny comes at a time the Authority has initiated a broader crackdown on housing societies with non-functional STPs. Since April this year, several societies have faced FIRs under environmental laws and fines ranging from Rs 12 lakh to Rs 30 lakh for discharging untreated sewage into stormwater drains. The enforcement drive has affected multiple properties, such as RG Residency, Lotus Panache, Sikka Karmik, Purvanchal Royal Park, Aims Max Gardenia, Prateek Stylome, and Amrapali Silicon City. The Authority has even sought the cancellation of registrations for some societies and filed police complaints against others, including Supertech Cape Town's AOA. The HC, however, stayed any action against RG Residency in May. A recent Right to Information query has revealed that 43 group housing societies in Noida lack the mandatory 'consent to operate' for their STPs.
