
Early humans adapted to extreme habitats. Researchers say it set the stage for global migration
'Our superpower is that we are ecosystem generalists,' said Eleanor Scerri, an evolutionary archaeologist at the Max Planck Institute of Geoanthropology in Jena, Germany. 'Our species first evolved in Africa around 300,000 years ago.' While prior fossil finds show some groups made early forays outside the continent, lasting human settlements in other parts of the world didn't happen until a series of migrations around 50,000 years ago.
'What was different about the circumstance of the migrations that succeeded–why were humans ready this time?' said study co-author Emily Hallett, an archaeologist at Loyola University Chicago.
Earlier theories held that Stone Age humans might have made a single important technological advance or developed a new way of sharing information, but researchers haven't found evidence to back that up. This study took a different approach by looking at the trait of flexibility itself. The scientists assembled a database of archaeological sites showing human presence across Africa from 120,000 to 14,000 years ago. For each site, researchers modeled what the local climate would have been like during the time periods that ancient humans lived there.
'There was a really sharp change in the range of habitats that humans were using starting around 70,000 years ago,' Hallett said. 'We saw a really clear signal that humans were living in more challenging and more extreme environments.' While humans had long survived in savanna and forests, they shifted into everything from dense rainforests to arid deserts in the period leading up to 50,000 years ago, developing what Hallett called an 'ecological flexibility' that let them succeed.
While this leap in abilities is impressive, it's important not to assume that only Homo sapiens did it, said University of Bordeaux archaeologist William Banks, who was not involved in the research. Other groups of early human ancestors also left Africa and established long-term settlements elsewhere, including those that evolved into Europe's Neanderthals, he said.
The new research helps explain why humans were ready to expand across the world way back when, he said, but it doesn't answer the lasting question of why only our species remains today.

Conservationists Release Rehabilitated Vultures Back Into The Wild On South African Mountain
Five vultures rescued and rehabilitated by a conservation group have been released back into the wild on a mountain range in South Africa. Two of the Cape Vultures were rescued from the illegal wildlife trade where the bird's body parts are sought after for potions and charms. One of them had all its feathers removed, and the Vulpro vulture conservation group looked after it for nearly a year while they grew back. Two of the other vultures were injured in the wild. One was saved after it landed in a dam and became waterlogged and was unable to fly, conservationists said. The birds were set free on the Magaliesburg Mountains in northern South Africa, where there is an existing vulture colony. Vultures generally are not well-loved because of their appearance and because they feed entirely on carrion–or dead animal carcasses–and are often associated with death. But conservationists say these scavengers are critical for cleaning up ecosystems and preventing animal and human disease outbreaks. Because of their eating habits, vultures are also susceptible to mass poisoning when poachers target other animals, and they can die in their hundreds from a poisoned carcass. Six of Africa's other native vulture species are listed as endangered or critically endangered. The Cape Vulture was removed from the endangered list in 2021 after successful conservation efforts but is still classified as vulnerable. The vulture release was organized by Vulpro and the Humane World for Animals organization.

Us aid cuts halt hiv vaccine research in south africa, with global impact
Just a week remained before scientists in South Africa were to begin clinical trials of an HIV vaccine, and hopes were high for another step toward limiting one of history's deadliest pandemics. Then the email arrived. 'Stop all work,' it said. The United States, under the Trump administration, was withdrawing all its funding. The news devastated the researchers who live and work in a region where more people live with HIV than anywhere else in the world. Their research project, called BRILLIANT, was meant to be the latest to draw on the region's genetic diversity and deep expertise in the hope of benefiting people everywhere. But the 46 million from the US for the project was disappearing, part of the dismantling of foreign aid by the world's biggest donor earlier this year as President Donald Trump announced a focus on priorities at home. South Africa has been hit especially hard because of Trump's baseless claims about the targeting of the country's white Afrikaner minority. The country had been receiving about 400 million a year via USAID and the HIV-focused PEPFAR. Now that's gone. Glenda Grey, who heads the Brilliant program, said the African continent has been vital to the development of HIV medication, and the US cuts threaten its capability to do such work in the future. Significant advances have included clinical trials for lenacapavir, the world's only twice-a-year shot to prevent HIV, recently approved for use by the US Food and Drug Administration. One study to show its efficacy involved young South Africans. 'We do the trials better, faster, and cheaper than anywhere else in the world, and so without South Africa as part of these programs, the world in my opinion is much poorer,' Gray said. She noted that during the urgency of the COVID-19 pandemic, South Africa played a crucial role by testing the Johnson & Johnson and Novavax vaccines, and South African scientists' genomic surveillance led to the identification of an important variant. A team of researchers at the University of the Witwatersrand has been part of the unit developing the HIV vaccines for the trials. Inside the Wits laboratory, technician Nozipho Mlotshwa was among the young people in white gowns working on samples, but she may soon be out of a job. Her position is grant-funded. She uses her salary to support her family and fund her studies in a country where youth unemployment hovers around 46 percent. 'It's very sad and devastating honestly,' she said of the US cuts and overall uncertainty. 'We'll also miss out collaborating with other scientists across the continent.' Professor Abdullah Ely leads the team of researchers. He said the work had promising results, indicating that the vaccines were producing an immune response. But now that momentum, he said, has all kind of had to come to a halt. The BRILLIANT program is scrambling to find money to save the project. The purchase of key equipment has stopped. South Africa's health department says about 100 researchers for that program and others related to HIV have been laid off. Funding for postdoctoral students involved in experiments for the projects is at risk. South Africa's government has estimated that universities and science councils could lose about 107 million in US research funding over the next five years due to the aid cuts, which affect not only work on HIV but also tuberculosis – another disease with a high number of cases in the country. Less money and less data on what's affected. South Africa's government has said it will be very difficult to find funding to replace the US support. And now the number of HIV infections will grow. Medication is more difficult to obtain. At least 8,000 health workers in South Africa's HIV program have already been laid off, the government has said. Also gone are the data collectors who tracked patients and their care, as well as HIV counselors who could reach vulnerable patients in rural communities. For researchers, Universities South Africa, an umbrella body, has applied to the national treasury for over 110 million for projects at some of the largest schools. During a visit to South Africa in June, UNAIDS executive director Winnie Byanyima was well aware of the stakes and the lives at risk as research and health care struggle in South Africa and across Africa at large. Other countries that were highly dependent on US funding, including Zambia, Nigeria, Burundi, and Ivory Coast, are already increasing their own resources, she said. 'But let's be clear, what they are putting down will not be funding in the same way that the American resources were funding,' Byanyima said.

Book Review: ‘The Hidden Life of Trees' by Peter Wohlleben
'The Hidden Life of Trees' is a controversial 2015 book by German author Peter Wohlleben, who argues that trees communicate with each other as well as feel. Wohlleben presents the idea that forests are a living social network — claiming that trees have ties akin to families, which they care for and help grow in their own way. According to the author, trees use underground fungal networks to share nutrients with other trees to help them recover from disease and thrive. It is a contentious claim, supported in part by academics including from the University of Portsmouth, which has published research showing that mature plants help smaller plants thrive in harsh environmental conditions. Another article from BBC Earth supports some of Wohlleben's claims, describing how some trees can use their senses to 'hear' predators through vibrations in the ground or 'smell' other plants by detecting chemical indicators. An additionally curious aspect of the book is its ideas about complex tree communication methods. It also talks about different factors that play a role in their growth, like fungi, insects and birds. The author goes to great lengths, moreover, to push the idea that securing healthy forests through sustainable practices helps the wider environment flourish. However, the book has come in for significant criticism, with Sharon Kingsland, writing in the Bulletin of the Ecological Society of America, suggesting it is aimed at 'lay' readers rather than forestry scientists, many of whom Wohlleben has 'infuriated' by 'eliciting an emotional response from readers through (the book's) powers of suggestion.' Kingsland says the author tends to anthropomorphize trees, whilst noting a 2017 petition launched by two German scientists calling on colleagues to criticize the book received over 4,500 signatures, calling it a 'conglomeration of half-truths, biased judgements, and wishful thinking.' Despite this, 'The Hidden Life of Trees' is a great read for people who want to see nature in a new light, as it sets out a path to view trees not as inanimate commodities, but as ecosystems with needs which, if met, will have wider benefits for the planet.
