Beni Mellal-Khenifra: Morocco, Korea's KOICA Partner to Improve Maternal, Child Health
Rabat – Morocco's Ministry of Health and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) have signed a $11 million deal to improve maternal and child health in the Beni Mellal-Khenifra region. A statement from the Korean company said the agreement was signed on June 26, marking the 'beginning of a $11 million initiative funded by KOICA.' The initiative will be implemented over four years from 2025 to 2029, the statement said, noting that the project seeks to reduce preventable maternal, neonatal, and child mortality in the region. It also seeks to improve nutrition care service in rural areas in the region, the press release indeed, conveying KOICA's determination to support the implementation of technical on-site capacity-building training and health equipment and performance monitoring in low-performing health facilities. The project is part of the company's expansion after the 'successful implementation' of a project in the Tetouan-Tangier-Al Hoceima region. Hyewon Cho, Country Director of KOICA, commented on the agreement, noting that the partnership highlighted Korea's commitment to supporting Morocco's healthcare system. 'KOICA stands ready to be a key partner in strengthening primary health services in Beni-Mellal-Khenifra,' Cho said. According to the company, Morocco's Ministry of Health is expected to provide full administrative and technical support to ensure the implementation of the project, highlighting both parties' determination to engage to achieve project goals and ensure sustainability. In May, the World Bank shed light on Morocco's genuine efforts to tackle maternal and infant mortality rates. Despite the commendable efforts, however, the World Bank acknowledged that this issue continues to be an issue affecting the country, especially in rural areas. 'Out of 100,000 live births in 2018, 111 mothers died in rural areas compared with 45 in urban areas,' the World Bank said, noting that there were also 26 deaths per 1,000 births in rural areas compared with 19 in urban areas. Moroccans Unable to Find Over 600 Essential Medicines
Morocco is facing a severe and ongoing shortage of essential medicines, with over 600 drugs out of stock nationwide – including treatments for diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, neurological disorders, and cancer. The Moroccan Consumer Rights Association (FMDC) conveyed concerns over the situation, noting that this is no longer a temporary disruption but a systemic collapse that threatens public trust in the entire healthcare system. In a recent statement, FMDC says that it has received dozens of complaints from citizens who spend days searching pharmacies with no results. Many are unable to find life-saving medications and are left to ration doses or go without. Despite repeated warnings, the Ministry of Health and Social Protection has failed to act. The association blames the crisis on poor oversight, lack of planning, and the absence of a proper pharmaceutical monitoring system. It calls the situation a direct threat to the right to treatment and accuses the government of neglect. The association is demanding an independent investigation into the causes of the shortages, accountability for those involved in hoarding or manipulating supplies, the creation of a national system to monitor drug availability in real time, and the establishment of a state-controlled strategic stockpile to prevent future crises. It also warned pharmaceutical companies and distributors against profiteering from the crisis, accusing some of deliberately creating shortages to manipulate prices. It emphasized that medicine should be treated as a critical public good, not as a commercial product, and stressed the fatal health consequences such practices can have on vulnerable populations.

Moroccan Biologist Jinane Zouaki Joins Ibero-American Academy of Pharmacy
Rabat – Moroccan biologist Jinane Zouaki has been appointed as an academic corresponding member of the Ibero-American Academy of Pharmacy. Her appointment marks a big milestone, as she is the first Moroccan, Arab, and African woman to receive this honor. The official ceremony took place on Tuesday at the Faculty of Pharmacy in Granada, Spain. The event gathered many scientists from Spain, Portugal, Latin America, and Morocco. In her speech to the academy, Zouaki spoke about her history of pharmacy in Morocco. She outlined the country's recent efforts to strengthen its health sovereignty under the leadership of King Mohammed VI. She explained that this national strategy has helped Morocco become a leading industrial hub and a strong, competitive player in both regional and international healthcare sectors. Speaking to Morocco's state news agency MAP, Zouaki shared her pride and gratitude for joining such a prestigious institution. She said the recognition is not only a personal achievement, but also a proud moment for Moroccan women and for the country as a whole. This recognition contributes to Morocco's scientific presence on the international stage, she added. Originally from the northern city of Tetouan, Zouaki holds a doctorate in pharmacy. In 2022, she became the first Moroccan and African to receive the Medal of Privilege from the University of Granada, a high honor that celebrates her long journey in education and biomedical research. Zouaki also made history as the first Moroccan to join the Royal Academy of Pharmacy of Catalonia. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she volunteered to help medical teams.
