Piled-up garbage in rural areas raises a stink
The affected areas are Bagbera, Harhargutu, Khasmahal, Kitadih, and adjoining areas.
"There's gross negligence by the administration and the panchayat bodies, due to which the civic waste remains unattended for months. We often make pleas to the officials, but seldom is there a response," said Bagbera Vikas Samiti president, Subodh Jha.
Residents have reported that unattended trash piles are visible everywhere.
Areas such as Ramnagar, Bajrang Tekri, Shiv Ghat, Shank Maidan, Gandhinagar, Traffic Colony Durga Puja Ground, and Pir Baba Maidan, among others, are littered with waste.
"On the insistence of the residents, local MLA (Potka) Sanjib Sardar raised the matter in the assembly twice in the past four months, but the garbage remained unattended," said Bagbera Colony Panchayat Samiti member, Sunil Gupta. The panchayat member mentioned that despite his efforts, panchayat heads are not calling meetings on the matter of garbage collection and disposal.

Residents have expressed concern that the littered waste is leading to health complications. "People set fire to domestic waste in the backyard to get rid of the garbage, which causes toxic gases to emit. The residents inhale the harmful gases that billow from the rubble," said Raju Sharma, a resident of Gandhinagar.
Furthermore, with regular bouts of rain lashing the region for the last two weeks, people are experiencing a stench while crossing through the garbage-littered areas.
"With the monsoon expected to arrive after two weeks, the situation will worsen, with children and elderly people, in particular, likely to fall sick if the garbage is not removed by then," Gupta said.
Authorities said that local panchayats need to take the initiative and arrange funds for regulating waste disposal management, whereas the urban administration can contribute as a facilitator. "Panchayat bodies have the funds for cleaning and disposal of the garbage.
I have repeatedly asked gram panchayats to hold meetings and work out a plan, but the lackadaisical approach of the panchayat heads is causing the delay," said BDO, Jamshedpur, Sumit Prakash.
"There was some delay in convening the gram sabha due to various reasons. There was also a communication gap between the gram sabha members. However, I will soon call a meeting to address the garbage issue," said Bagbera Gram Pradhan, Chunku Mardi.

In 2017, Chetan Soorenji, a corporate sector executive , installed a cooling solution on his Chembur rooftop using a trellis of passion fruit vines. Within months, bees, butterflies, and sunbirds flocked to the blossoms. Sensing potential, Soorenji introduced two native bee species—Apis Cerana Indica and Apis Trigona—with support from Under the Mango Tree Society (UTMTS), a nonprofit that helps small and marginal farmers boost yields through native bee pollination. UTMTS was initially unsure. Would native bees thrive in a city? They did. And when the bees thrived, the vine thrived. The partnership worked so well, it turnedinto the solution to rural bee flight during the dearth period. Together, UTMTS and Soorenji launched a pilot in Dharampur. A handful of farmers were given saplings, training, and trellis infrastructure. But the first trial failed. "The plantation was set up on a terrace farm where the soil didn't have much organic matter, and so the output was poor," says Soorenji. The project was relocated to more fertile plots, and this time it flourished. Still, adoption was slow. "Farmers didn't take to the passion fruit easily," says Sujana Krishnamoorthy, eecutive director, UTMTS. "For one, the plant was completely alien to them. Secondly, it required care and attention, and because it wasn't their primary crop, farmers couldn't always spare money, and effort on it. Eventually, only the more progressive farmers took it up." Attrition remains high. Soorenji estimates a 50% dropout rate, driven by climate stressors like rising temperatures and falling groundwater levels. Even with rainwater harvesting and earthen pot irrigation training, some farmers view the upkeep as extra burden. But for others, the vines have become essential. Pundalik Govind Ghangre from Bhavada in Nashik has maintained his plantation since 2022, aided by saplings Soorenji routinely provides. "The vines work for the bees and the dynamic works for us," he says. Ghangre was initially concerned he'd have to spend more on the crop than what he'd earn from it, but later discovered cost-effective ways to maintain it. "The vines can be grown on walls, roofs, and even fences. " Still, the real incentive for many is the bees. "Many of the farmers are committed beekeepers," says Krishnamoorthy. DPS, NRI, TS Chanakya Wetlands Safe Under Amended NMMC Development Plan
Navi Mumbai: Environmental activists are pleased that three significant wetlands—DPS Flamingo Lake, NRI, and TS Chanakya water bodies at Nerul in Navi Mumbai—remain protected according to the revised Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) draft Development Plan. These wetlands are mentioned in the govt gazette, which is out inviting suggestions and objections before the final approval. The previous draft designated these three locations as water bodies in blue. However, CIDCO had different plans, marking DPS Lake for development, NRI Waterbody for a golf course, and TS Chanakya wetland as a residential area. The state urban development department's recent notification states that suggestions and objections must be submitted by August 23. NatConnect Foundation has initiated a campaign to gather suggestions supporting the wetland status of these crucial water bodies, whilst welcoming the amendments to secure final govt approval. These wetlands, listed in the National Wetland Inventory Atlas, have been documented by the National Centre for Coastal Management (NCSCM) as per State Environment Department requirements. Their notification is pending, according to information obtained through the RTI Act. NMMC proposed maintaining these wetlands as flamingo habitats and eco-tourism sites, but CIDCO hasn't responded. The amendments maintain the ongoing real estate development at Sector-60, adjacent to the NRI wetland, as a residential zone. The Bombay High Court nullified the residential-cum-commercial project and golf course in November 2018, but CIDCO's appeal in the Supreme Court awaits hearing.
