I broke into tech after being a stay-at-home mom with no prior experience. Now I have my dream job and a stable income for my kids.
I got married at 20 and started a family really young. My husband was in the National Guard, and I was a stay-at-home mom, and then our marriage ended.
At 29 years old, I was single and had two small boys. Reentering the workforce, I knew I needed to make $15 an hour, which is about $30,000 a year. I enrolled in a cybersecurity boot camp, and when I got my first contracting position, I made about three times that amount. Two years later, I hit my six-figure salary mark.
I picked cybersecurity because the opportunity was there
Before getting into cybersecurity, I worked as a 911 communications officer for six months. I was barely making enough to make ends meet. I was unhappy, stressed out, and it was not a good fit.
The area where I live is close to a military base, and on Facebook, people said that if you get the proper certification, you could work on the base and make good money as a cybersecurity contractor.
I looked online and found a cybersecurity boot camp that could be taken virtually. I was then committed to landing a job in cyber.
Thinking about entering the workforce in tech was a little crazy
Boot camps have had a bad reputation for being scammy, but I didn't really have a choice. Some places have 24-week boot camps, which claim to teach you everything. Some of them guarantee that they'll help you land a job.
I'm a little bit older, and I wanted a career, so I was determined to make this work. I looked at the local colleges. I ideally wanted to find one close to me and a reputable name, and Georgia Tech had one.
Growing my LinkedIn presence helped me launch my career
My boot camp professor told us cybersecurity is a small field, and we needed to network. I knew no one, and I thought about what I could do. One of the things I could do was use LinkedIn.
I would share what I was learning in boot camp to look like a real candidate in the cybersecurity field. A lot of those early posts were bumpy, reposts, or two-liners. I would also attend webinars and message the presenter on LinkedIn afterward and say, "Hey, I really appreciated your webinar, or I saw your video on YouTube. I really liked it."
Slowly, that helped me gain more credibility because I was then connected to these prominent speakers.
A recruiter reached out to me after seeing my posts
I started my boot camp in February and was set to graduate in August. I started applying to places in July, and I was getting some interviews but not landing anything.
I was still posting that I'm looking for my first job, that I bombed an interview, or about other career journey experiences. At one point, a recruiter messaged me, and two phone calls later, they offered me a junior phishing contract position, which included analyzing emails to determine if they were benign or malicious.
My original goal was to get a job on base, but I needed a paycheck, and I realized I could just leverage this opportunity into something more.
Ultimately, it worked out. I worked 12-hour night shifts, and it was brutal. But I leveraged that nighttime experience to talk with and learn from other team members because nights were quieter. Ultimately, after three months, I was able to secure a full-time job with that company.
I'm now happily employed, but I still post on LinkedIn
After I was hired full-time, I was promoted to an associate security operations center analyst and then became a career security operations analyst. Then I reached a point where I wanted more.
I saw this opportunity at Wiz, a cloud security company, on LinkedIn, and because I always stay ready, I had my résumé prepped and applied immediately. I didn't know anybody at Wiz or have a referral; I just applied. I was able to land the first and second interviews and eventually get that offer.
I'm now happily employed at the company as a security operations analyst, but I still post on LinkedIn. The tech market changes so fast, so I think it's really important to keep showing up for yourself and for the future career that you want. Even if you're happy right now, you don't know what's going to happen in the future.

Does ESG Drive Consumer Confidence?
There is a meme swirling through LinkedIn where an online stock trader bemoans the current economy and asks if we should bring back pronouns because woke was 'load bearing' the bull market. Of course, it's a joke. Because most serious businesspeople believe the downturn in ESG/sustainability/purpose efforts is simply because companies can't afford to 'be good' in this market. All that social good stuff is subject to market forces, it can't actually cause them, surely? Perhaps it's time to unpick the complicated causality between sustainability and confidence. Consumer confidence is well understood: in times of consumer optimism, when people believe the future will be better, economies grow. Consumer spending rises, productivity surges, and governments are emboldened to make long-term investments. In short, when societies believe they are improving, that lives will get better, economies follow suit. Call it self-fulfilling prophesies or the economist preferred 'market reflexivity', the phenomenon has been long studied. Optimistic people spend money, get jobs and drive growth. That's why the current backlash against ESG, DEI, and sustainability might be more than an economic sideshow. Indeed, dumping all the 'social good stuff' just might be supremely reckless. Because dismantling the scaffolding of social progress risks collapsing the very confidence on which modern economies depend. The Confidence Feedback Loop Let's start with a basic but under appreciated truth: most economies are confidence machines. Consumers buy when they believe they'll have money tomorrow. Businesses invest when they believe their markets will grow. And governments undertake major investments when they believe society will reward them for it. Sustainability, ESG, and DEI initiatives do not merely respond to that confidence. They help generate it. Take the consumer. Across major economies, the rise of the sustainability zeitgeist coincided with a measurable uptick in what the OECD calls 'consumer future orientation' which is a proxy for optimism about personal and national economic prospects. A 2021 OECD report notes that people who identify with sustainability concerns are more likely to engage in future-oriented financial decisions, from household investment to lifestyle planning This is not accidental. When people see businesses and policymakers actively pursuing social and environmental progress, they are more likely to believe in their own future and thus spend, invest, and plan for it. Greenhush Is Anti-Happiness If sustainability builds consumer confidence, then hiding it does the opposite. So-called greenhushing, when companies underreport or obscure their sustainability activity for fear of backlash, is becoming a silent saboteur of consumer sentiment. What may seem like a prudent communications strategy is, in fact, a confidence trap. Consumers can't reward what they can't see. The trust premium that sustainability generates comes from transparency, not virtue concealed in spreadsheets. In Edelman's 2023 Brand Trust Report, 73% of global respondents said they want to know what companies are doing behind the scenes on social and environmental issues, and 64% say silence makes them suspicious. When firms retreat from visible commitments, they risk creating a vacuum filled by doubt. People begin to wonder whether companies are still investing in long-term value, or simply waiting out the cultural noise. Worse still, greenhushing undermines the shared norms that drive collective progress. Sustainability is a signal that society is moving forward. When leaders go quiet, others question whether progress is stalling altogether. Then there is our fatalism problem. In a landmark 2021 global survey, The Lancet Planetary Health asked ten thousand people aged 16–25 across ten countries about climate anxiety: 56% of them agreed that 'humanity is doomed'. Do marketers genuinely believe this level of ennui, fatalism and misery is good for business? Greenhushing not only undermines brand equity but also bust consumer confidence. The logic is simple: if the companies you trust won't speak confidently about the future, why should you spend confidently in the present? So, greenhushing may shield a firm from one week's headlines, but it erodes the trust that underpins future demand. In a values-driven marketplace, silence is forfeiture. Woke Markets Are Bull To be clear, ESG and DEI are imperfect. But their presence, even flawed, is better than their absence. Because together they generate an optimism dividend: the added economic value that comes from people believing they live in a society worth contributing to. Economists often talk about how £1 of government spending can generate £1.50 of economic activity, aka fiscal multipliers. Well, social and environmental optimism is the ultimate multiplier. One act of progress can spark ten acts of confidence, which in turn fuel hundreds of decisions that grow the economy. In a time when productivity is stagnant, investment is hesitant, and anxiety is high, we should protect and expand the drivers of collective confidence. Sustainability, DEI, and the wider social-good agenda are prerequisites for the consumer confidence that drives growth. It takes hope to turn a bear into a bull. And hope, as every economist should know, is the most powerful economic force we have.

The AI talent wars look like pro sports drafts. These podcasters are your sideline commentators.
If last year was the summer of AI startup fundraises, this one will go down in history books as the one when machine learning researchers were treated more like pro athletes than Ph.D.s. The AI talent wars have reached new, almost comical heights. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has reportedly dangled offers in the hundreds of millions — and at least one reportedly greater than $1 billion — to lure top talent away from rival firm OpenAI and startups spun out of it, like Mira Murati's Thinking Machine Labs. That kind of money sounds more fitting for an NBA draft pick than a machine learning engineer. This absurdity — and the flurry of traditional media attention on it — has fueled the rise of the tech-friendly "Technology Business Programming Network," or "TBPN" for short. On the daily talk show, a series of 15-minute interviews with tech's biggest names and their backers, cohosts John Coogan and Jordi Hays track talent moves with ESPN parlance. Since late June, their "TBPN" X account has posted dozens of baseball-card-style graphics of AI researchers being "traded" between top labs, as if they were athletes swapping jerseys. "We realized early on that people would call TBPN the Sports Center for tech," Hays said on Bloomberg's Odd Lots podcast on Monday, revealing an ironic truth about their branding: "It sounded cool. We didn't really know what that meant. John and I don't watch sports at all." The duo's calculated charisma has sparked a social storm because of its redux of the podcast, a played-out format in tech and venture capital. Many main character-coded investors and tech luminaries have podcasts of their own — from Harry Stebbings' "The Twenty Minute VC" to the "All-In Podcast," where Chamath Palihapitiya, Jason Calacanis, David Sacks, and David Friedberg hold court online. In an industry often cautious of media coverage, Coogan and Hays's inside baseball tone has struck an approving chord. "Tech becoming entertainment is the best thing that could've happened for my archetype," one wrote on X. Ex-founders flipping the script The hosts' intimate familiarity with the startup world — and the access being an ex-founder brings — may afford them a unique vantage point into the tech's inner workings. Coogan has "never really had a real full time job," he told Business Insider in April, when we first profiled "TBPN," but he has built a roster of companies. In 2013, Coogan cofounded Soylent, which quickly amassed a cult following. After Soylent, he cofounded Lucy, which makes nicotine gum and pouches. He's also an entrepreneur in residence at Peter Thiel's Founders Fund. "TBPN" isn't Coogan's first time running a tech media playbook. He skims The Wall Street Journal in print while lounging in his gym's sauna every morning and channeled that ritual into content during the pandemic with a news-driven YouTube channel that has nearly half a million subscribers. In college, Hays built a YouTube ad network to help podcasts monetize. He then started a fintech company, Party Round, later renamed Capital, which helped startup founders raise money. Capital was acquired by the business banking platform Rho in 2023. Hays also angel invests in early-stage startups and advises others, like Coogan's Lucy. The pair decided to take their idea for a founder-friendly talk show more seriously late last year. "We were joking that technology needs a podcast," Coogan said. "Because, obviously, there's a ton." Two months after their first episode in October 2024, Coogan and Hays were uploading three episodes a week. In January, they began featuring guests and moved to broadcasting every weekday. Episodes are shot live, and interviews with founders are unedited. Though typically filmed from a soundstage in Los Angeles, Coogan and Hays have increasingly shot live from high-profile tech events, including the Hill & Valley Summit in DC earlier this year and from the floor of the New York Stock Exchange for Figma's IPO in late July. Building an AI roster In July, "TBPN" launched its Metis List, which ranks the top 100 AI researchers, in large part by number of citations on AI research papers, a quantitative estimate of their contributions to the field, Hays said on Odd Lots. At the top of the list, according to Coogan, OpenAI cofounder Ilya Sutskever, who was early to spot the importance of using transformer technology at Scale, Coogan added, and is the CEO of Safe Superintelligence Inc., known as SSI. Sustkever's story also shows fierce competition in the AI sphere. His SSI cofounder, Daniel Gross, left the company in July after his venture investing partner Nat Friedman was tapped to co-lead Meta's Superintelligence Labs. The Financial Times reported in April that SSI last raised at a $32 billion valuation. Hays told Odd Lots that he and Coogan obsess over tech "the way that our college friends follow sports." So far, the duo has interviewed 200 or so guests who work or invest in AI, according to the "TBPN" guest directory. That roster includes OpenAI engineers like Yash Kumar and Isa Fulford; Scott Wu, founder and CEO of Cognition AI, who appeared after the startup acquired AI coding assistant Windsurf; interim Windsurf CEO Jeff Wang also joined that same day; and John Chu, a partner at Khosla Ventures who invests in AI. Coogan and Hays have breathed new life into the meaning of the tech bro: "The name 'tech bros' had been a slur, right?" Hays told Business Insider in April. "We wanted to reclaim that word in a fun way by saying, 'No, we're not tech bros — we're technology brothers.'" The duo has watched the AI draft from the sidelines, but Coogan and Hays don't pretend to be journalists. They think of themselves as "digitally-native news anchors," Hays said. They aren't venture capitalists either (though they do occasionally angel invest). While some of their tech brethren have raised funds off their podcast momentum (Stebbings, for example, started 20VC's fund in 2020 after his podcast took off), the pair has different intentions. "We want to do what we're doing now for decades," Hays said. "We're not doing this so that in a year we can raise a fund."
