Congress seeks fair compensation for farmers killed in Maharashtra's lightning strikes
In response, state minister Girish Mahajan said in the assembly that the the government will consider the suggestion to increase the compensation and he will discuss the matter with the chief minister.
According to the minister, 236 persons died due to lightning strikes in 2022, while 181 such deaths were reported in 2023.
Raising the issue during the Question Hour in the state assembly, Wadettiwar said lightning strikes often lead to the deaths of poor farmers and labourers working in fields, leaving their families devastated and without any support.
"At present, only ₹ 4 lakh is given as compensation, which is grossly inadequate. When a person dies in a tiger attack, the government provides ₹ 25 lakh. Why this discrimination when someone dies due to a natural calamity like lightning?" he asked.
Responding to the demand, Disaster Management Minister Girish Mahajan said until recently, deaths caused by lightning were not covered under the state's disaster relief framework.
"Now these have been included, and the government will consider the suggestion to increase the compensation. I will discuss the matter with the chief minister," Mahajan assured.
The issue of adequate compensation for climate-related fatalities is gaining traction amid rising incidents of extreme weather events across the state.
Mahajan informed the House that two mobile applications, Damini and Sachet, developed by a central government institute, are currently being used to warn people about lightning strikes.
A new app is under development to provide hyperlocal alerts with a range of up to 400 metres, he added.
"Currently, the apps provide lightning alerts within a 400 km radius. The new technology aims to significantly narrow this window for better real-time safety," Mahajan said in response to a question by MLA Santosh Danve.
Supplementary questions were posed by Bhaskar Jadhav, Vijay Wadettiwar and Sameer Kunawar.
The session highlighted growing concerns over natural disaster preparedness and the need for transparency in farmer-centric schemes.

Anti-sacrilege bill will ensure exemplary punishment: Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann
Shehna (Barnala), July 19 (PTI) Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Saturday said the anti-sacrilege bill, which was introduced in the state assembly, will ensure exemplary punishment for those who indulge in desecration of religious scriptures. Mann reiterated his government's commitment to curb sacrilege incidents. On July 14, the AAP government introduced in the House the Punjab Prevention of Offences Against Holy Scripture(s) Bill, 2025 — proposing punishment up to life imprisonment for sacrilege acts against religious scriptures. The state assembly referred the bill to a select committee of the House to seek public opinion including religious bodies on the proposed legislation. The chief minister emphasised that this sensitive and critical issue affects all Punjabis and has far-reaching implications for both present and future generations. Stringent punishment is necessary to serve as a deterrent against such crimes, Mann said during his address. On his government's anti-drug drive, he said the 'Yudh Nasheyan Virudh' (war against drugs) campaign has proven the effectiveness of the state government's strategy in tackling drug abuse. He pointed out that the drug menace had long tarnished Punjab's image. In response, his government adopted a multi-pronged approach — disrupting drug supply chains, arresting major offenders, rehabilitating victims, and seizing or destroying illegally acquired property of drug smugglers. As part of the anti-drug campaign, the chief minister said panchayats have been passing resolutions to declare their villages drug-free. He said that his government will not sit idle while smugglers thrive at the cost of the lives of drug victims. The state has already snapped drug supply lines and jailed key players involved in the trade, Mann said, adding that for the first time, the illegally acquired properties of drug smugglers are being confiscated or demolished, serving as a strong deterrent to others. Speaking about the agricultural sector, Mann said he had promised to ensure paddy transplantation without the use of tubewells. He expressed pride that canal water has now reached even the remotest villages at the tail ends of the state and said that since taking office, the government has revived 15,947 water channels across Punjab. Mann said that at the time he assumed office, only 21 per cent of canal water was being used for irrigation but today that number has risen to 63 per cent. He also mentioned that his government successfully safeguarded Punjab's water resources from being diverted to other states. Agents take Rs 1 lakh for rental car licences, says Vijai
Panaji: GFP MLA Vijai Sardesai on Saturday alleged that agents have been collecting Rs 1 lakh for rent-a-cab licences, which is then passed to transport minister Mauvin Godinho's personal assistant. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He said the sudden halt on rent-a-cab licences is a govt move to pre-empt scam revelations in the House. 'The department has appointed agents in Margao, Panaji, and Vasco, and they are taking Rs 1 lakh in cash from each applicant. They are now refusing to return the money,' said Sardesai. 'One agent from Margao has taken money from 250 to 300 people... that is Rs 3 crore. Some vehicles have arrived and owners are paying premiums, but they have not received the letter from the transport department, so they can't get their cars. The agents claim that some money was given to the minister, and the minister says he is going to make a movie on Ram Mandir,' said Sardesai.
