Top dog-friendly spots in Scotland for a summer adventure with your furry friend
As the summer sun shines and staycation demand continues to rise, dog owners across the UK are looking for holiday ideas that welcome four-legged family members.
From paddleboarding on lochs to steam train adventures and doggy ice cream, this summer's top activities are all about bonding, exploring, and tail-wagging fun, with Scotland offering some of the best spots of all.
Dog Friendly Retreats has rounded up ten of the most exciting dog-friendly things to do around the UK this summer, with Scotland being home to two of them.
Whether you're planning a week-long escape or just a fun day out, these adventures are designed for both pups and their people.
One standout is Loch Morlich, nestled in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park. As Scotland's only freshwater beach to win national awards, it combines soft golden sands with postcard-perfect views of the snow-topped peaks.
Dogs can splash in the shallows or explore lochside forest trails, while owners relax or enjoy water sports from the nearby activity centre.
Equally stunning is Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh, an ancient volcano that rises 251 metres above sea level and offers panoramic views over the city.
Surrounded by Holyrood Park's 640 acres, dogs are welcome to roam grassy paths and craggy slopes, or sniff their way through the ruins of St Anthony's Chapel. The area's rich history, geology and birdlife make it more than just a walk in the park.
Further south, Camber Sands in East Sussex and Rhossili Bay in Wales offer expansive beaches where dogs can roam free, while Lake Windermere in the Lake District has become a hotspot for paddleboarding with pups.
Calm morning waters and hire shops that cater to dogs make it a perfect way to try something new.
But it's not all about the coast. The Four Falls Trail in Bannau Brycheiniog, previously know as the Brecon Beacons, winds through ancient woodland and rocky gorges, rewarding dogs and owners alike with four spectacular waterfalls and plenty of cooling plunge pools along the 5.5-mile route.
If you prefer a slower pace, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway offers a nostalgic ride on a steam train where dogs travel for free. Hop off at Goathland, better known as Hogsmeade in the Harry Potter films, for a moorland ramble or a wander through Whitby's historic harbour.
For foodie pups, Salcombe Dairy in Devon serves up Scoop's Ice Cream for Dogs, made with banana, apple and probiotic yoghurt. And for a more peaceful pace, a gentle cruise along the Norfolk Broads offers dog-friendly boats with plenty of scenic pub stops and wildlife spotting.
Events are also stepping up their game. Paws in the Park in Kent and the UK-wide DogFest series feature everything from agility courses and canine splash zones to gourmet food stalls and live music, all with wagging tails in mind.

'From wild swimming to steam train rides, these experiences are all about making memories with your dog, not just finding places that tolerate them. Whether you've got a seasoned hiker or a sun-loving sofa surfer, there's something here to suit every kind of pup and their human.'

Substation fire that shut Heathrow Airport to cost it ‘tens of millions'
The boss of Heathrow has revealed the chaotic closure of the London airport in March after a substation fire is expected to cost it tens of millions of pounds. Chief executive Thomas Woldbye told the PA news agency the financial impact of the temporary closure caused by a power outage was expected be in the 'low tens of millions'. The group is now waiting for a report from energy watchdog Ofgem to finalise its findings into the incident to see if it can claim compensation from National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET). No flights operated at the west London airport until about 6pm on March 21 because of the blaze which started late the previous night. More than 270,000 air passenger journeys were disrupted by the incident. Mr Woldbye told PA the group had 'learnings' to take away from the incident. A report into events clarified that Mr Woldbye had been asleep with his phone on silent as the overnight decision to close the airport was taken. He said: 'That is one learning and that will not happen again. 'I would have liked to see my personal role play out differently. 'That said, we need to have procedures in place that ensures that this company can take the right decisions at the right time by the right people, no matter what the situation is.' 'An organisation like ours has to be able to manage, whether the captain's on the bridge or not,' he said. In an interview with BBC Radio 4's Today programme, he denied misjudging what it meant to be the head of one of the world's busiest airports. Ofgem has launched an official enforcement investigation into NGET after a report found the fire that caused the shutdown of Heathrow was due to a preventable technical fault. The report by the National Energy System Operator (Neso) said an 'elevated moisture reading' had been found in oil samples at the North Hyde substation in west London in July 2018, but that action was not taken to replace electrical insulators known as bushings. The comments came as the airport revealed half-year profits fell by more than a third despite seeing passenger numbers soar to a record high. The group posted a 37.2% drop in pre-tax profits to £203 million for the six months to June 30 as its costs surged, partly driven by a higher wage bill after last autumn's budget measures.

Harry Maguire issues statement to confirm Manchester United U-turn
Manchester United have flown out to the USA pre-season tour, landing in Chicago, but Harry Maguire was conspicuous by his absence as the Red Devils landed Stateside Harry Maguire has confirmed he will join Manchester United on their pre-season tour of the United States after missing their flight on Tuesday. England defender Maguire came on at half-time in the 0-0 draw with Leeds United in Stockholm on Saturday. But he had to be replaced in the second half by Tyler Fredricson. On Tuesday afternoon, the 32-year-old was not part of the 32-man United squad that flew out to Chicago for the Premier League summer series - with United taking on West Ham, Bournemouth, and Everton. The headline inclusion was new signing Bryan Mbeumo, who finally completed a £71million transfer from Brentford on Monday. Goalkeeper Andre Onana is also on the plane, as he steps up his recovery from a hamstring injury which he sustained in the first week of pre-season training. Mirror Football reported last week that United are hoping to welcome Onana, 29, back for their third and final friendly in the USA against Everton. But Maguire was conspicuous by his absence. However, he has now sought to allay any fears over his injury on social media. He said: "All is fine now. I will be travelling tomorrow (Wednesday) to meet up with the squad. Thanks for your concern." Looking ahead to the tour stateside, Reds boss Amorim was asked what he was looking forward to about their trip to North America. "[Meeting fans] it [was] the same in the last tour," he said. "We feel that they [the fans] deserve more in every aspect so we are going to give. "I think it is our responsibility to interact with our fans and we have that in our group. We are going to do that. And also in that department, we are going to be closer, [that's] what Manchester United should be." A number of youngsters have been named in Amorim's squad including goalkeepers Dermot Mee and Will Murdock, defenders Fredricson and Ayden Heaven, midfielders Toby Collyer, Jack Fletcher and Sekou Kone, and forwards Bendito Mantato, Chido Obi and Ethan Williams. United's first game is against West Ham and will be played at midnight UK time on Saturday at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, where next year's World Cup final will be held. Amorim's men will then take on Bournemouth at 2:30am next Thursday, July 31 in Chicago. Finally, the Red Devils are scheduled to play Everton at 10pm on Saturday, August 3 in Atlanta. Their run of friendlies ends with Fiorentina at Old Trafford a week later.
