Dad who fell overboard on Scots ferry named as wife fears he may never be found
A dad who fell overboard while travelling on a ferry on Father's Day has been named as a US Navy diver, as his wife fears he may never be found.
Mark Federspiel went into the water while travelling home from Gourock to Dunoon with his wife Annette, after visiting his 22-year-old daughter Lara on the mainland on June 15.
The 64-year-old, who was travelling on the Sound of Shuna, was reported missing at around 1pm, when he didn't return from the toilet. Annette said she raised the alarm just seven minutes later.
A major multi-agency search operation was launched, which involved the HM Coastguard helicopter, RNLI lifeboats and nearby vessels, as well as Police Scotland officers, their Dive and Marine Unit and Air Support Unit.
Western Ferries suspended their services while the rescue operation was underway - but the search was later stood down at around 4.30pm on Monday, June 16, with nothing found.
Nearly two weeks on, Annette says she fears that Mark will never be found, as the circumstances of what happened to him remain a mystery. Sadly the ferry they were travelling on had no cameras along the sides and there were no eyewitnesses.
Speaking to STV News, Annette said: "All I know for sure is that I came onto the boat with Mark, but I came off it without him. He has been missing for 12 days now, and the police haven't found a body.
'An oceanographer is now assisting the effort. They are looking at things like the tide and Mark's weight, with the working assumption that he may end up in the area off Helensburgh. But we might never get him back.'
It's understood Mark had been receiving treatment for a rare form of leukaemia, with the side effects of the drugs often leaving him unsteady on his feet.
Paying tribute in a post on Facebook, Annette wrote: "My lovely husband. My soul mate, my life. We are broken. A gentleman. Kind, talented hero. We love you we miss you. It was a pleasure to be your wife I was a lucky girl."
In another post, she added: "I will never stop looking for you."
It's understood Mark and Annette had recently returned to her hometown of Dunoon, after spending years in the United States and were looking forward to their retirement in Scotland.
As a US Navy diver, Mark had been responsible for disassembling explosives at sea and was nicknamed 'Mark the Shark' because of his speed. Police Scotland said 'exhaustive' water searches had concluded, but inquiries are continuing.
Chief inspector James McArthur said: 'Around 1.40pm on Sunday, June 15, 2025, we received a report of a 64-year-old man missing from a ferry travelling between Gourock and Dunoon.
'Police and partner agencies, including the Coastguard attended and extensive searches have been carried out on the water and shorelines. Local officers have been assisted by our Dive and Marine Unit and Air Support Unit.
'The water searches have concluded, however, our enquiries remain ongoing and officers are providing support to his family.'
A spokesperson for Western Ferries said they have been co-operating fully with the police and emergency services to assist in understanding the circumstances.

Leonna Ruka: Southend church opening for 'time of reflection' in aftermath of tragedy
A church is to open for "prayers and reflection" for a community mourning the death of a seven-year-old girl who was killed by a falling tree. Leonna Ruka died when the tree toppled in Chalkwell Park in Southend, Essex, on Saturday. The youngster from Dagenham was visiting family in the area, and her six-year-old cousin remains in a critical condition in hospital. Three other children received minor family described her as " the light in their lives" in a tribute to the "perfect" youngster on Tuesday. Hundreds of bunches of flowers have also been left near the scene since Saturday. A nearby church, St Mark the Evangelist, on Hamlet Road, has announced it will be open between 6pm and 7pm on Wednesday for anyone grieving or for those who need support. Posting on Facebook, a spokesman for the church said: "We share our deepest sympathy and prayers with the family and loved ones of Leonna Ruka, and all connected with the tragic incident that occurred in Chalkwell Park on Saturday. "St Mark's Church will be open between 6pm and 7pm on Wednesday 2 July, for a time of reflection, prayer and lighting of candles for anyone grieving or troubled." Investigation launched after wildfires ravaged area size of 10,500 football pitches
A joint investigation has been launched after wildfires in the Highlands and Moray ravaged an area the size of 10,500 football pitches. Firefighters worked overnight to extinguish wildfires at Tombain Farm in Forres and at Loch Allan on Wednesday morning. It emerged on Tuesday that the size of the area damaged by the wildfires, which broke out on Saturday, is around 7,500 hectares – equivalent to 10,500 football pitches. Thousands of animals have been killed in the fires, and pockets of peat remain burning as fire crews from Aberdeenshire, Moray, and the Highlands continue work to control the flames. RSPBScotland RSPB Scotland has been supporting the Fire Service in tackling wildfires near Dava and Carrbridge. Specialist equipment such as all-terrain vehicles, fogging units, beaters, and leaf blowers have been used while SFRS wildfire tactical advisors have coordinated the response. Several road closures remain in place, and members of the public have been urged to avoid travelling to the areas impacted. Locals have also been urged to keep windows and doors closed if smoke is still visible in affected areas. On Wednesday afternoon, Police Scotland said a joint investigation is under way with SFRS to establish the full circumstances. STV News Firefighters have worked through their fourth consecutive night to tackle wildfires across the Highlands and Moray which broke out on Saturday. Chief inspector Mike MacKenzie, local area commander, said: 'Fortunately no one has been injured but a large swathe of the countryside has been badly affected. 'SFRS is fully prepared to deal with outbreaks, and we are grateful to them and other first responders for their ongoing efforts to keep people and property safe. 'Although SFRS has not declared a major incident and no requests for mutual aid were made at this afternoon's resilience partnership meeting, we stand ready to provide support as required.' Local gamekeeper Calum Kippen said at one point, workers had to 'flee for their lives' as sudden weather changes directed the fire into their path. He said: 'There were a number of gamekeepers who had been trying to carry out a tactical backburn. At that point, the wind changed, and the main fire headed towards them. 'It was over a mile away and they reckon it advanced towards them probably in less than ten minutes, that they had to flee for their lives.' The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) in Scotland and land and estates workers have been aiding firefighters in tackling the blazes. 'We have been supporting (SFRS) with fire-fighting equipment including an argo vehicle and fogging unit, backpack blowers and pumps and staff from our Abernethy nature reserve have been helping to try and get the situation under control,' an RSPB Scotland spokesperson said. 'The impacts of the fires on people and wildlife will become clear in the coming weeks but right now we hope that the local communities affected and everyone working at the scene stays safe.' SFRS added that it was aware of welfare supply donations to local stations from members of the public, and while grateful, is unable to accept any more items. Monetary donations also cannot be accepted. The public has also been reminded to be mindful of the risk of wildfires and to prevent them from starting in the first place. Fires, stoves, and BBQs should not be lit outdoors during dry periods, and litter should not be dropped, alongside cigarettes.
