Experts emphasize need for advanced system to improve Coffee Production and Quality

Saba Yemen19-02-2025
Sana'a - Saba:
Experts and researchers have stressed the importance of establishing a specialized and advanced system to enhance the productivity and quality of coffee, strengthening its competitiveness in both local and international markets by leveraging its unique characteristics and long-standing reputation.
During their participation in the Coffee Business Clinic, also known as the "Consultation Tent," as part of the Sana'a International Coffee Exhibition, they highlighted that the clinic aims to provide information, guidance, and advisory services to exhibitors, including farmers, trading companies, exporters, university students, and researchers.
Dr. Amin Al-Azab, senior expert at the National Center for Coffee Research, explained that the clinic, managed by a group of academics, researchers, and coffee specialists, operates in two key areas: one focused on commercial coffee marketing and entrepreneurship, and the other on coffee seedling cultivation, care, and production.
He noted that the clinic offers consultations on seedling production, coffee tree cultivation, pest control (both in farms and storage facilities), proper harvesting and post-harvest handling, marketing, exporting, and even launching small-scale coffee businesses. It also provides guidance on evaluating coffee quality, identifying different coffee varieties, and understanding the unique processing methods for each type.
Dr. Al-Azab added that the Coffee Business Clinic also covers key aspects of roasting techniques, production processes, and challenges facing coffee farming in different regions. This information helps establish a precise and detailed database on coffee cultivation and production across various provinces in Yemen.
Meanwhile, Mohammed Rashid, Director of Coffee Affairs in the Dhamar Agricultural Sector and a supervisory team member, stated that the clinic focuses on providing guidance from variety selection to post-harvest handling, covering planting seasons, farming techniques, and best practices for coffee production and marketing.
He emphasized that these guidelines help protect farmers from losses by educating them on proper agricultural methods and ensuring adherence to best farming practices suited to different regions.
Engineer Rashid also underscored the importance of holding a seminar after the conclusion of the Sana'a International Coffee Exhibition, bringing together farmers, exporters, local traders, agricultural associations, and coffee business stakeholders to discuss key outcomes and strategies for developing this vital economic sector.
For his part, Mohammed Hassan, President of the Union of Coffee Producers' Associations, described the Coffee Business Clinic as an essential educational and advisory platform aimed at increasing production and improving quality to enhance market competitiveness.
He highlighted that the exhibition features various promotional activities, serving as an opportunity for the public to learn about Yemeni coffee products and facilitating knowledge exchange among participants. The event has attracted over 250 representatives from leading companies, associations, and coffee producers, as well as institutions involved in the coffee trade.
It is worth noting that the Sana'a International Coffee Exhibition, organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources, in collaboration with the General Corporation for Coffee Development and Marketing and funded by the Agricultural and Fisheries Production Promotion Fund, includes promotional activities to spread awareness of Yemeni coffee culture and highlight the significance of coffee cultivation.

Hayel Saeed Anam Group Announces Discounted Price Lists Amid Currency Recovery

Aden — Hayel Saeed Anam Group, one of Yemen's largest and most influential conglomerates, has officially adopted reduced price lists for several of its key products. This strategic adjustment coincides with a notable strengthening of the national currency, following months of economic volatility. Company officials stated that the price reductions affect a wide range of essential goods, including foodstuffs, household items, and personal care products, aiming to pass on the benefits of improved currency value directly to consumers. The revised pricing was implemented across the group's distribution network, including major retail outlets and affiliated partners. A spokesperson for the group affirmed: 'We recognize the importance of responding quickly to positive economic indicators. Our updated pricing reflects our commitment to supporting the Yemeni people and maintaining fair market practices.' The recent improvement in the exchange rate has been attributed to increased foreign reserves and coordinated efforts by the Central Bank to stabilize the economy. Analysts see the group's move as a proactive step in reinforcing consumer confidence and enhancing purchasing power in a recovering market.

Political Violence Surges in Yemen as Fuel Imports to Houthi-Controlled Areas Plummet

Sana'a — Yemen is witnessing a sharp escalation in political violence amid a significant drop in fuel imports to Houthi-controlled territories, raising concerns over humanitarian fallout and regional stability. According to recent reports, the Saudi-backed Yemeni government has suspended approvals for fuel shipments destined for the port of Hudaydah, a key entry point for supplies into northern Yemen. As of late June, over 20 fuel tankers carrying approximately 500,000 metric tons of fuel were stranded in the Coalition Holding Area in the Red Sea, awaiting clearance. The move follows allegations that the Houthis misappropriated 45 billion Yemeni rials from a special account at the Central Bank's Hudaydah branch, diverting funds to support their military operations. In response, the Houthis have accused the coalition of orchestrating a blockade, using the fuel crisis as a propaganda tool to rally support and inflate prices in local markets. Meanwhile, political tensions have intensified. Houthi drone attacks on oil infrastructure in government-controlled regions, including the Dhabba Oil Terminal in Hadramawt, have disrupted exports and heightened fears of renewed conflict. These strikes, coupled with the group's refusal to renew a UN-brokered truce, signal a return to aggressive tactics aimed at pressuring the Yemeni government and its allies. Analysts warn that the dual crisis—fuel shortages and rising violence—could deepen Yemen's humanitarian catastrophe. Millions remain dependent on fuel for electricity, water access, and transportation, while political instability threatens fragile peace efforts.

Yemeni Rial Rises Sharply Amid Central Bank Crackdown on Currency Markets

Aden — The Yemeni rial recorded a notable surge against the US dollar for the third consecutive day, reversing months of steep decline that had pushed the currency to historic lows. Currency traders in Aden reported that the rial climbed to 1,900 per dollar for buying and 2,100 for selling, compared to an average of 2,650 just a day earlier and over 2,900 earlier this month. The rally follows a series of regulatory measures by the Central Bank of Yemen in Aden, which recently suspended licenses for 37 exchange firms found to be in violation of financial regulations. Analysts say the crackdown has curbed speculative trading and reduced demand for foreign currency in the black market, contributing to the rial's recovery. Economic experts also credit the bank's activation of an import oversight committee, which now requires fuel importers to transact exclusively through designated banks rather than informal exchange networks. This shift has reportedly eased pressure on foreign reserves and stabilized demand for hard currency. Despite the improvement, market conditions remain fragile. Many traders have halted dollar purchases amid uncertainty over future regulations, while consumer demand continues to weaken due to inflation and limited purchasing power. The rial's rebound has sparked cautious optimism, with some analysts predicting a gradual decline in commodity prices if the trend holds. Yemen's economy, battered by a decade-long conflict, faces ongoing challenges including dwindling foreign reserves, disrupted trade, and widespread humanitarian needs. The recent currency gains offer a rare moment of relief, though experts warn that sustained recovery will require deeper structural reforms and political stability.
