Daytona races to Smullen success at Naas

Glasgow Times05-07-2025
A comfortable Gowran winner on his racecourse debut last month, Daytona was sent off the 4-5 favourite for trainer Aidan O'Brien and jockey Wayne Lordan, with the result never really looking in doubt.
Daytona initially looked a little green when given the signal to go on by Lordan, but he was too good for North Shore, pulling three and a quarter lengths clear with the minimum of fuss, earning a 20-1 quote from Paddy Power for next year's 2000 Guineas.
Stable representative Chris Armstrong said: 'Jack (Cleary) gave him a lovely introduction in Gowran where for a first timer and he was impressive. He's come along lovely at home since then, but he's still fairly raw.
'They went along at a nice pace and he travelled into it really strong, but when he got there he was still very babyish.
'He has the makings of a lovely horse and next year you could see him over a mile and a quarter.
'He could be one for something like the Futurity or Golden Fleece. He's a horse to look forward to. He'll develop physically, he's a fine big imposing horse and he's by that sire Wootton Bassett.'
This mile race is part of the new 'Smullen Series' which consists of 18 middle-distance races for two and three-year-olds and honours the late Irish champion jockey who enjoyed Derby glory with Harzand.
Smullen was O'Brien's brother-in-law and Armstrong added: 'It's a lovely new series that they've introduced and all these new series initiatives help the programme.
'It's named after a legend and Aidan picked this race out straight after Gowran for him. He's delighted to win the first running of it and hopefully we can win a few more of them.'

Clerk of the Course ‘absolutely delighted' with line-up for Armoy Road Races even though star duo set to be absent

Davey Todd is a huge fan of the Irish road race but is due to compete at the Brands Hatch round of the British Superbike Championship for the 8TEN Racing team, which he co-owns with Peter Hickman. Northern Ireland's Michael Dunlop has won the blue riband Race of Legends 10 times but ruled himself out of his home race following a dispute with the organisers, and looks set to miss out for the second year in a row. Aside from Dunlop and Todd, Ryan Farquhar is the only other rider to have won the Race of Legends Superbike event, with a new winner poised to be crowned at the weekend. Contenders include Yorkshireman Jamie Coward, who was the 2024 Man of the Meeting. Coward has recovered from injury following a crash at the North West 200 and will be among the favourites on his stable of KTS Racing BMW, Triumph and Kawasaki Supertwin machines. The line-up includes Paul Jordan from Magherafelt on the Jackson Racing machines, who won his first race at the North West in the Supertwin class in 2025. The Isle of Man's Conor Cummins returns for John Burrows' team on 1000cc BMW and Ducati Supersport machinery, while Michael Sweeney is in fine form after giving Dunlop a run for his money at June's Tandragee 100. Fellow Republic of Ireland rider Mike Browne could be the man to beat in the Supersport races on the BPE by Russell Racing Yamaha, while England's Phil Crowe has a strong record at Armoy and finished second in the Race of Legends 12 months previously behind Todd. William Munnis, Armoy Clerk of the Course, said a 'great weekend of road racing' was in store. 'We're absolutely delighted with the number and calibre of riders joining us this year. 'With returning favourites, newcomers and international teams set to take part, spectators can expect a great weekend of racing. 'We have over 20 newcomers this year with a third of them coming from the South, and there are a few races that are oversubscribed, but as a club, we are really keen to ensure that everyone gets some track time – we are probably going to have to run some B races, too. Friday will be interesting, it always is, but if we get it right, Saturday should take care of itself. 'As always, we've had tremendous support from each and every one of our sponsors, who give so generously to ensure that we can continue to host the Armoy Road Races. 'With their help and that of the fans, the local community and residents, we expect to have another good year's racing. 'The club, volunteers, the circuit – everything is set and ready to go for the riders to land in the paddock and for the fans and spectators to arrive on Friday – although I see a few people dotted around the course already in motorhomes and tents.' Dominic Herbertson is another leading Armoy protagonist who cannot be discounted in a high-class field. Wigan's Rob Hodson is a standout name among this year's newcomers along with Finland's Erno Kostamo, a regular at the NW200 and the winner of the 2022 Macau Grand Prix in China. Manx rider Joe Yeardsley and Offaly's Kevin Keyes will also tackle the undulating three-mile course for the first time. Roads close on Friday from 10.00am for practice, followed by two races for Supertwin and Supersport riders, time permitting. On Saturday, roads close at 9.00am and will reopen by 7:30pm.

North Coast takes Tyros triumph in style

Joseph O'Brien's charge had been beaten just under three lengths by Flushing Meadows on his debut at the Curragh in June before winning next time out and chasing home Daytona in Listed prize on his latest start. He was sent off a 3-1 chance against the Aidan O'Brien-trained 30-100 market leader Flushing Meadows, who was only just beaten in Group Three company on his most recent start,. Under a positive ride from Dylan Browne McMonagle, North Coast more than had the measure of the favourite, coming home a six-length winner, although Ryan Moore did ease his mount a little in the closing stages. Paddy Power put North Coast in as a 25-1 chance for next year's 2000 Guineas and Derby, with a Group One date likely to be next on the agenda. 'That's probably a good trip for him, a stiff seven furlongs,' said the winning trainer. 'He ran great in Naas and you'd have to be impressed with what he did today. 'I backed him up a bit quick coming here, so we'll probably go straight to the National Stakes now rather than going for the Futurity on the way. That would be my immediate thought. 'He's a smart colt and has an exciting future. 'I was very impressed with his last half-furlong. It looked like it was going to be an eyeballing match down to the line but he really pulled away again.' Composing made virtually all the running to register a comfortable success in the Saudi Cup Silver Flash Stakes. Fifth on debut at the Curragh in May, she broke her maiden back at that track last month, prompting Aidan O'Brien to raise her sights to Group Three level here. Moore was eager to get to the front and allowed to stride on, he dictated the pace aboard the 4-9 favourite and Composing never looked like being caught, eventually pulling three and a quarter lengths clear of the staying-on Skydance. The Wootton Bassett filly was cut to 16-1 from 25s by Paddy Power for both the 1000 Guineas and Oaks next year, with O'Brien rating her a potential Group One challenger later in the campaign. 'We're delighted with her, she's a lovely, straightforward filly,' said O'Brien, who was winning the race for the fourth successive season. 'She won lovely the last day and Ryan loved her. She was very professional. 'She'll go for the Debutante Stakes at the Curragh next and could be a filly for the Moyglare.'
