Department of Environment cracks down on Kulim chicken plant over pollution, demands immediate corrective action

Kedah DOE director Sharifah Zakiah Syed Sahab said the action was taken under Section 38 (1)(a) of the Environmental Quality Act (EKA) 1974 following a complaint regarding the odour pollution by the factory. She said acting on the complaint, A DOE team went to the factory location and the results of the investigation found that the foul odour pollution was from a pile of chicken slaughter waste and chicken cages kept there. 'The factory was imposed the POK action for failing to provide an industrial effluent treatment system at its premises,' she said in a statement today. Sharifah Zakiah said that with the POK action, the factory is required to take immediate action to stop the pollution. 'A notice under Sections 31 and 37 of the Environmental Quality Act 1974 has been issued to the factory, requiring immediate repair and maintenance work during the POK enforcement period. The factory will only be permitted to resume operations once the Kedah DOE is satisfied with the corrective actions taken. 'The industry is reminded to always comply fully with the Environmental Quality Act 1974 and regulations under it, and to ensure that no environmental pollution is caused,' she added. Negeri Sembilan Activates Haze And Open Burning Response Plan
SEREMBAN, July 21 (Bernama) -- The Negeri Sembilan government has activated its state-level response plan based on the National Haze Action Plan and National Open Burning Action Plan, in line with instructions from the Department of Environment (DOE). State Entrepreneurship, Human Resources, Climate Change, Cooperatives and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman S. Veerapan said the plan was activated after the Air Pollutant Index (API) level exceeded the 150 threshold for a continuous 24-hour period. 'The state government will intensify patrols and enforcement against open burning activities, especially in high-risk agricultural and industrial areas. 'We will also assess the implementation of cloud seeding technology in collaboration with federal agencies should air pollution levels continue to rise,' he said in a statement today. He also urged the people in Negeri Sembilan to play an active role by reporting open burning activities through the DOE complaint hotline and supporting the state's efforts towards a more sustainable future. According to DOE's Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS) portal, eight areas in Peninsular Malaysia recorded unhealthy API levels as of 6 pm today. Alor Gajah in Melaka recorded the highest reading at 157, followed by Seremban (155), Negeri Sembilan; Kemaman (153), Terengganu; Banting, Selangor; Temerloh and Balok Baru in Kuantan, Pahang, each at 152; Nilai (146), Negeri Sembilan; and Johan Setia (140), Selangor. An API reading between 101 and 200 is considered unhealthy, which can have adverse effects on high-risk groups, including the elderly, children, and individuals with respiratory conditions. -- BERNAMA

Sembulan folks seek ongoing support from Gagasan Rakyat

Tanjung Aru division committee member Dr Ritchie Jay Cheng said the initiative was carried out following calls from local residents highlighting the urgent needs of several families. Advertisement 'As a committee member of Gagasan Rakyat Tanjung Aru, I felt compelled to come down personally with our volunteer team to deliver the food baskets,' he said.
