Project Alankar, which transformed UP schools, gets thumbs up in meeting chaired by PM Modi
Several states approached the UP CM to understand the project closely and showed an inclination to replicate the model. Assistance was sought for the team of senior officials who are expected to visit the state to assess the situation on the ground.
Project Alankar was launched to transform the infrastructure and learning environment in state-run secondary schools across UP. The meeting, focused on sharing best practices in governance, saw Project Alankar emerge as a standout example of effective educational reform.
Launched on Oct 1, 2021, the project seeks to achieve 100% compliance with 35 infrastructure and facility benchmarks in 2,441 govt secondary schools across the state.
Under this initiative, schools are equipped with essential and modern facilities such as newly constructed classrooms, science laboratories, libraries, computer labs, smart classrooms, clean drinking water, and hygienic toilets—creating a conducive and inclusive environment for learning.

Funding for Project Alankar comes from various sources, including the state govt, Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, Gram Panchayats, urban local bodies, company CSR contributions, and voluntary donations.
The implementation is closely monitored by district-level committees chaired by the district magistrate and overseen by the education director at the state level.
Significant improvement was also recorded in the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2024, which stated, "Clearly, something is changing in the schools of Uttar Pradesh, which is encouraging children to attend and actively participate in learning."
The report showed increased enrolment in govt secondary schools by 23% between 2022-23 and 2024-25. Attendance in primary schools, from classes 1–5, rose by 11.5% from 2010 to 2024, while that in upper primary schools, from classes 6 to 8, grew by 9.6% from 2018 to 2024 (the highest in the country).
Further, the use of libraries in schools surged by 55.2%, and access to girls' toilet facilities improved by 54.4%.
As part of Project Alankar, Chief Minister Model Schools (pre-primary to Class 12) and Chief Minister Abhyudaya Schools (pre-primary to Class 8) are also being developed.
These schools have state-of-the-art facilities, including dedicated buildings for young children, STEM laboratories, computer labs, smart classrooms, playgrounds, mini stadiums, solar panels, and water conservation units. Each Abhyudaya School, designed to accommodate 450 students, was allocated Rs 1.42 crore for development, said a govt spokesperson.
The scheme also includes constructing, renovating, and upgrading infrastructure in 11 Sanskrit schools located across 7 districts of UP. For the comprehensive rejuvenation of 141 Sanskrit schools, the Yogi govt sanctioned Rs 14.94 crore.

Majithia moves HC against ‘illegal arrest'
1 2 3 Chandigarh: Senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former minister Bikram Singh Majithia has approached the Punjab and Haryana high court against his "illegal" arrest by the Punjab Police in a corruption case. According to Majithia, the FIR dated June 25 registered against him by the vigilance bureau in Mohali is a result of political witch-hunting and vendetta, initiated by the present political dispensation. It has also been stated that the sole object of the FIR is to malign and harass him for being a vocal critic and political opponent. As per the petition, he was kept in illegal custody on June 25 for few hours before his formal arrest was made. "The remand application filed by the investigating agency lacked any concrete or urgent investigative ground and merely relied on broad, speculative allegations such as his alleged influence, foreign connections, and general statements about the need to confront him with documents or digital devices. These assertions clearly reflect a motive to extract a confession or admission from the petitioner in violation of the constitutional provisions," Majithia claimed in his plea. The petition filed by the senior leader also alleged that the magistrate, while granting remand, failed to record mandatory satisfaction as required under rules, including examining case diaries, recording reasons for police custody, and ascertaining the existence of a specific investigative need. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Neuropatia atacando durante o dia? According to the plea, the SC in its detailed order dated March 4 refused his custodial interrogation despite the same allegations being pressed before it via multiple affidavits filed by the state of Punjab. It has been further claimed that despite his cooperation and findings of the apex court, the state once again resorted to seeking police custody by concealing material facts and misrepresenting urgency before the magistrate. 70% dip in Indians caught trying to enter US illegally in Jan-May 2025
AHMEDABAD: The number of Indians caught crossing illegally into the US in the first five months of 2025 fell a whopping 70% over the same span last year following Donald Trump's return as President and his take-no-prisoners immigration policies. The number fell from 34,535 in Jan-May 2024 - when President Joe Biden was in office - to 10,382 in the same period of 2025. Yet, the fact that 10,382 Indians risked life and limb to sneak in even as the route becomes more perilous indicates the desperation to chase the American dream remains just as fierce. The count included at least 30 unaccompanied minors, many from Gujarat. The numbers have been released by US Customs and Border Protection (USCBP). The sharp drop coincides with the Trump administration's renewed crackdown on illegal immigration, which allegedly disrupted long-standing smuggling networks that cater to hopeful migrants from Gujarat. Anticipating Trump's return, many syndicates paused ops from late 2024 US Customs and Border Protection (USCBP) data shows a dramatic reversal in border encounters, with daily arrests of Indians dropping to around 69 from 230. Many of these syndicates paused their operations from late 2024, anticipating Trump's return. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like She is just 10 years old! "People still want to go, but smugglers have either scaled back or raised costs, and the fear of stricter deportation is real. " The broader impact is also visible in USCBP's overall data, which show the number of illegal immigrants (across all nationalities) apprehended dropped sharply over the same five-month period of 2025. Such arrests fell from 81,492 in Jan to 28,617 in Feb, 29,021 in March, 29,218 in April, and 29,502 in May. Yet for many Indians, especially from Gujarat, the dream of a better life across the border remains irresistible, and often fatal. On May 9, a boat carrying illegal migrants capsized near Del Mar, California, killing 14-year-old Prince and 10-year-old Mahi. Their parents, Brijesh and Sangita Patel, survived the wreck with grievous injuries. The deaths are not isolated. At least nine people from Gujarat are confirmed to have died while trying to cross the US border since Jan 2025. Of the at least 30 unaccompanied minors caught this year, agents said some were probably abandoned by adult companions during the perilous journey. In some cases, smugglers encouraged families to separate in hopes that minors would be treated more leniently under US immigration rules. According to officials, Gujarat continues to be one of the main sources of such illegal migration. "Over the past decade, networks of agents have established overland routes through Central America," an official said.

Commercially driven: Maya hits out at Centre over train fare hike
Lucknow: national president on Tuesday said that the central govt's decision to increase the passenger train fare is driven more by commercial concerns than the welfarist objectives of the Constitution. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now She said that at a time when people in the country are badly hit by poverty, unemployment, inflation and lesser incomes, the train fare hike is not in public interest. "It will be better if the govt immediately rethinks it," she added. The govt increasing the burden on people in their day-to-day lives in the name of 'nation first', through railways, just like GST, is highly inappropriate, said the BSP chief. Train travel is not a fashion, joy or tourism for crores of people who are forced to migrate because of poverty, inflation, and lack of permanent and respectable employment, and to take care of their families, she said. She added, "The highly uncomfortable train travel is a compulsion and basic requirement for them." The govt should be sympathetic towards them, and instead of thinking about its profit or a handful of rich and prosperous people, it should be concerned about crores of such people who are craving to live a life of self-respect. They are bound to take little benefits from govt's welfare schemes to get a stomachful of food at least one time a day, she said. "It is because of this that 95 crore people in the country were forced to be a beneficiary under at least one of the social welfare schemes of the govt. In 2025, there were 64.3 per cent such people against 22 per cent in 2016. But, the govt is citing this data from the International Labour Organisation as its achievement," said the former UP CM. She also said that the central and Delhi govts should also look at the exploitation and difficulties faced by the middle-class urban population and crores of poor and hardworking people on the pretext of pollution control almost every day. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Instead of acting strictly against the lifespan of vehicles to control pollution, the govt needs to act on other measures as well, so that people in the transport business are saved from further inconvenience and financial hardships, she added. She also decried the Delhi govt's demolition drives in slums as "anti-people" and said that the govt is doing it without making any alternate arrangements for people. "The govt is saying that it is doing so on court's order, when the court has not put any ban on making alternate arrangements for people before displacing them," said Mayawati. The shortage of electricity supply in the entire country has affected people, industrialists, and small traders alike, she added.
