SALALAH: In preparation for the upcoming Khareef Dhofar Season, the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism has inaugurated several new tourism projects across the governorate.
The newly opened facilities include the Dhofar Private Museum, an 84-room three-star hotel in Mirbat, and a luxury serviced apartment complex in Salalah with 216 rooms. These additions bring the total number of licensed tourism establishments in Dhofar to 100, collectively offering more than 8,000 hotel rooms. A new tourist information centre has also opened at Al Haffa Beach Market to enhance visitor services.
Khalid bin Abdullah al Abri, Director-General of Heritage and Tourism in Dhofar Governorate, emphasised the significance of the khareef season as one of Oman's most important tourism events. Speaking to Oman News Agency (ONA), he noted that the unique monsoon climate makes Dhofar a prime destination attracting visitors from different countries.

The ministry has implemented a comprehensive promotional campaign for this year's khareef season as part of its broader tourism strategy. Early marketing efforts included participation in international travel exhibitions such as the Arab Travel Market 2025 in Dubai, where Dhofar Municipality officials held a press conference to announce the season's events. Additional promotional workshops were conducted in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, highlighting new direct flight routes to Salalah Airport operated by airlines including Flynas, Saudi Airlines (Flyadeal), Kuwait Airways and Jazeera Airways.
Al Abri explained that the ministry's strategy focuses on extending the tourism season over 100 days while managing visitor distribution across three distinct periods between June 21 and October 10. The peak season from mid-July to late August typically sees the highest occupancy rates, while the ministry is working to boost visitation during the shoulder seasons through targeted marketing and special travel packages. — ONA

Annual date harvest season, Al Tabseel, showcases centuries-old techniques

Farms and villages across Oman are brimming with excitement as the season of Al Tabseel unfolds — a time of jubilant celebration, collective effort and cultural pride deeply rooted in the country's rich heritage. This annual tradition, which coincides with the peak summer months from late June to late July, transforms local communities into vibrant hubs of activity centred around date harvesting, processing and communal merriment. Al Tabseel is much more than merely an agricultural activity; it embodies Oman's centuries-old social fabric and farming expertise. The season signifies the harvest of the prized Mabsali dates, particularly from the lush plantations of Jaalan Bani Bu Hassan, renowned for producing some of the finest dates that are not only beloved locally but also exported globally. These dates, distinguished by their bright yellow colour and sweet flavour, are carefully harvested, boiled in large traditional vessels known as Marajel, and sun-dried in open spaces such as Al Mestah — an age-old practice that preserves the dates' nutritional qualities whilst maintaining their cultural significance. Safa al Balushi, Creative Director of Al Mirani Fort, explains, 'Al Tabseel takes place during the hottest months when the Mabsali dates ripen. Farmers gather to harvest, then boil the dates for around half an hour before drying them under the sun for several days. It is a deeply rooted cultural event that brings communities together through traditional songs, storytelling and celebrations once the processing is complete'. The Al Mirani Fort, majestically perched on the Muttrah Corniche, recently hosted a lively celebration of Al Tabseel, supported by the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism. The event attracted numerous farmers and artisans from different regions, displaying a remarkable variety of dates and honouring Oman's enduring agricultural traditions. The gathering exemplified the inseparable link between coastal trade routes and inland farming practices — the historical relationship where dates harvested from oases were transported to coastal markets, bolstering local economies and fostering cultural exchange. 'Al Tabseel is a vivid illustration of Oman's interconnected heritage', remarks Safa al Balushi. 'It reflects the symbiotic relationship between sea and land, between commerce and community and highlights how these traditions have sustained generations of Omanis'. Since ancient times, farmers across Oman have celebrated this season with communal spirit and pride, often inviting entire families to participate in the harvest. Although modern influences have altered some traditional practices, the essence of Al Tabseel endures. Many wilayats continue to value this season as a significant social, cultural and economic event — an annual celebration that unites communities and safeguards their collective identity. According to historians and agricultural specialists, the tradition of Al Tabseel probably dates back several centuries, symbolising Oman's resilience and harmonious relationship with its natural resources. Today, efforts are underway to preserve and promote this cultural treasure, ensuring that future generations can continue to uphold and enjoy the legacy of their ancestors while sharing the renowned taste and tradition of Oman's dates with the world.

Passenger numbers rise at Oman airports

MUSCAT: Oman Airports recorded a 2-per cent year-on-year increase in passenger traffic in June 2025, with 1,134,924 travellers passing through Oman's airports, compared to 1,109,745 during the same month last year. This modest but positive growth is credited to coordinated efforts by Oman Airports and relevant authorities to position the country as an all-year-round tourist destination. These efforts include consistent upgrades to airport infrastructure, smart technologies and traveller services aimed at improving the overall passenger experience from arrival to departure. Oman Airports has focused on ensuring seamless, high-quality and safe travel by investing in advanced technologies that reduce processing times and boost efficiency. The onset of the Khareef Dhofar Season, known for its mild climate and natural charm, has also been a key draw for tourists during this period. Officials see this increase as a sign of the success of promotional campaigns and tourism initiatives. It also underscores the ability of Oman's airports to accommodate growing traffic volumes while maintaining international service standards. Looking ahead, Oman Airports expects travel activity to maintain momentum throughout the rest of the year. A combination of development projects and tourism events are set to further enhance the passenger experience and establish a fully integrated travel environment tailored to the needs of both visitors and residents. — ONA
