Sangeeth on 20 years of Super Star: Thanks to the 'no social media' era, we didn't even know the reach of the show
Remember that electrifying finale where Job and Sangeeth wowed everyone with their incredible vocal talent? In a thrilling neck-and-neck competition, it was Sangeeth who ultimately clinched the title, earning cheers from music lovers everywhere.
Even two decades later, fans still celebrate Super Star and Sangeeth's unforgettable journey. In an exclusive interview with ETimes, the singer reflects on the show that transformed his life.
"Blessed, that's the word I always use to describe the love I received through Super Star. Even after 20 years, people still recognize me as 'Sangeeth from Super Star,' and that's truly an honour. Winning a place in the hearts of the Malayali audience isn't easy, and I owe it all to the show," he shared.
Super Star premiered in 2005, at a time when the reality show format was still relatively new to the Kerala audience. Yet, despite being the first of its kind, it remains one of the best to this day.
'Back then, there was no social media, so we didn't immediately realize the impact the show was having. The only feedback we received came through letters and phone calls to the studio. But soon, we started feeling the buzz, every time we stepped out, people began recognizing us, and it was honestly a shock.

The reality show format was new not just for the audience, but for us contestants as well. Though I had previously won Gandharvasangeetham, this format was entirely different.
I had been singing at Ganamelas since a very young age, so performing live on a TV show wasn't too much of a challenge for me,' he added.
However, Sangeeth shared that the experience he gained from Super Star played a crucial role in shaping him as a singer.
'Maybe it was the unique format of the show that made it so popular and timeless. We had just one instrument accompanying us, Stephen's piano. We weren't asked to sing songs exactly as they were; instead, we were given the freedom to improvise and present them like unplugged versions, and this was 20 years ago. The conversations with fellow contestants, the judges, and the entire team, it was all an incredible learning experience,' he recollected.
When talking about Sangeeth's victory, there's another name that instantly comes to mind for every Super Star fan — none other than Job Kurian.
'He's a friend for life. We weren't competitors, we were just two friends immersed in music. The whole team felt like a family. Not once did any of us think about 'defeating' the other. We'd go to the floor together, practice together, cheer each other on, and simply enjoy the entire process.
Back then, we didn't know much about the world of reality shows or the buzz around it, thanks to the 'no social media' era. Towards the end, it was just Job and me in the competition.
Honestly, we tried every song we could, just to keep the show going,' he shared with a smile.
Recollecting his most cherished moment on the show, Sangeeth fondly remembered his widely acclaimed rendition of 'Oh Dilruba'.
'Every performance was special. Whether it was 'Oh Dilruba', 'Poi Sollakoodathu Kathali', or 'Koyi Kahe' in the finale, I loved them all. Even the final moment itself was unforgettable. But it wasn't just about the performances—every interaction with the judges was incredibly meaningful. Be it Bala Bhaskar,
Deepak Dev
, Alphonse, or Stephen Devassy, they were the best mentors we could have ever asked for,' Sangeeth shared.
When asked to share one piece of advice for young singers, Sangeeth emphasized the importance of first understanding the feel of the song.
'People often say I sing difficult songs with such ease. But it's never really easy, I simply do my best to capture and convey the true feel of the song. We can never sing exactly like KJ Yesudas or KS Chithra, but the least we can do is try to present the emotion and essence they brought to the music,' says the much-loved singer.
Though Sangeeth recently made a striking comeback with the re-release of Chotta Mumbai and his song 'Nombaram Kalayum Naalam Nee' was celebrated once again, viewers still find themselves asking him, 'Where are you?'
'Well, I haven't gone anywhere, I'm doing very well here. I'm settled in Kochi, balancing playback singing, stage shows, and independent music. The last song I sang was for the movie Alappuzha Gymkhana. I'm not very active on social media, and maybe that's why people feel like they miss me. But I take that as a blessing, after 20 years, they still remember me and look for updates. That, in itself, is a true blessing,' he concluded.

The red string of fate in anime: What it means and 5 iconic anime that use it beautifully
Source: Collider In anime, few symbols are as powerful or emotionally stirring as the Red String of Fate. Rooted in East Asian folklore, this invisible thread is believed to connect two people destined to meet, love, or profoundly impact one another, no matter the distance or obstacles. It appears in many beloved anime, often used to explore themes of destiny, romance, and spiritual connection. From iconic films like Your Name to heart-wrenching series like Your Lie in April, the red string remains a timeless symbol of unbreakable bonds. In this article, we explore its meaning and 5 unforgettable anime that bring it to life. What is the red string of fate? The concept originates from East Asian mythology, particularly Chinese and Japanese folklore. According to legend, the Red String of Fate (or Unmei no Akai Ito in Japanese) is an invisible thread that connects two people who are destined to be together. The string is tied around the little finger (pinky finger) of each person and cannot be seen, broken, or removed—no matter the distance or circumstances. Unlike Western ideals of "soulmates," the red string doesn't always imply romance. In many versions of the tale, it also encompasses deep friendship, familial ties, or karmic bonds. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo However, in anime, the red string is most often used to symbolise romantic fate—a bond so strong that not even death or time can sever it. Anime and films that use the red string motif The red string has made subtle and overt appearances in numerous anime and animated films, often acting as a narrative device to underscore the characters' inevitable connection. Your Name (Kimi no Na wa) Source: Crunchyroll Perhaps the most globally recognised modern use of the red string, Your Name (2016) by Makoto Shinkai centres around two strangers, Taki and Mitsuha, who mysteriously switch bodies across time. Mitsuha is often seen tying a red braided cord in her hair, which later becomes a key item in the plot. The cord symbolises their connection and fate. As the story unfolds, the red string becomes a visual metaphor for time, memory, and destiny. Tsubaki-chou Lonely Planet Source: Crunchyroll In this romantic anime and manga series, the red string appears as a symbolic gesture when the characters reflect on their emotional connection. The story delves into themes of unspoken affection and destined love, hinting at the idea that something larger is guiding their bond—even if they are not aware of it. Fruits Basket Source: Crunchyroll While not always literal, the red string symbolism appears thematically in Fruits Basket, especially in the relationship arcs of Tohru and Kyo. Their connection is built on emotional healing, understanding, and karmic ties—elements often tied to the red thread in folklore. Naruto Even action-based series like Naruto touch on the idea subtly. In the case of Naruto and Hinata, their love story is presented as fated from childhood, growing stronger through time and shared struggle. Though not shown through a literal red thread, the implication of destiny through bonds is a recurring theme in the show. Your Lie in April (Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso) Source: Crunchyroll While Your Lie in April doesn't show a literal red string, the emotional and symbolic connection between Kousei and Kaori strongly reflects the theme. Their meeting feels destined; Kaori enters his life just when he needs healing, and their bond changes the course of his future. The anime explores how people can be tied together by fate to leave lasting impacts, even if only briefly. Through music, memory, and loss, the story paints a bittersweet portrait of a connection that transcends time, much like the invisible red thread. Why the red string of fate touches anime fans The reason the Red String of Fate continues to appear in anime is simple: it speaks to a universal human desire that somewhere, someone is meant for you. Whether through time travel, chance meetings, or supernatural intervention, the idea that love (or meaningful relationships) is preordained provides comfort, hope, and emotional impact. In Japanese storytelling, where restraint and quiet emotions often dominate character interactions, the red string serves as a powerful visual shorthand for deep feelings that are rarely spoken aloud. The Red String of Fate is more than just a romantic trope in anime; it's a cultural expression of belief in destiny, emotional bonds, and cosmic design. Whether you see it tied in a character's hair, floating through time, or simply hinted at through symbolism, the red string reminds us that certain relationships are simply meant to be. In a world where anime explores everything from interstellar battles to inner turmoil, the red thread remains a quietly profound reminder: some connections are woven by fate itself. After the sudden and tragic demise of businessman Sunjay Kapur on June 12, 2025, speculation began swirling about the distribution of his vast ₹30,000 crore estate. While some media reports hinted that his former wife, Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor, might have a stake in his assets, sources close to the actress have now set the record straight. His mother, Rani Kapur, who holds a majority stake in Sona Comstar , the USD 3.5 billion auto tech firm Sunjay chaired, has allegedly clarified that Karisma has no role in the property division. Adding clarity, BollywoodShaadis reported that Karisma is not staking any claim in Sunjay's estate. The actress, who has long stayed away from media controversies post-divorce, appears focused solely on the well-being of her children—Samaira and Kiaan—whom she shares with the late industrialist. A Marriage That Was Never Meant to Be? Karisma and Sunjay married in 2003 but officially divorced in 2016 after a long, tumultuous period marked by public legal battles and personal differences.
