Supporters file mass petition to investigate alleged rape of Japan prosecutor by her boss

Khaleej Times27-01-2025
Supporters of a Japanese prosecutor allegedly raped by her boss submitted a petition with 58,000 signatures to the government on Monday calling for a thorough investigation, organisers said.
Kentaro Kitagawa, who is in his 60s, is accused of assaulting the woman at his official residence in 2018 when he headed the Osaka District Public Prosecutors Office.
The woman says she was drunk and unable to resist, and Kitagawa was arrested and charged after she came forward with her accusations last year.
At the first hearing in October Kitagawa apologised for causing "serious damage" to the woman and said he would not contest the charges.
But in December he changed course, with his lawyer telling reporters that his client was unaware that she was unable to resist and believed there was consent.
The following day the woman held a news conference — with her face hidden and not revealing her name — and broke down in tears.
"We were just a boss and a subordinate, and I was too drunk to resist at the time," local media quoted her as saying.
Her supporters submitted the petition to the justice ministry on Monday, calling for Kitagawa to be "thoroughly investigated" to give "the female prosecutor dignity, justice and honour".
"We submitted the petition but we didn't receive an immediate comment from the justice ministry official who received it," said Yukiko Yamazaki, one of supporters.
A ministry official confirmed they had received the petition.

Barca cancel Japan pre-season friendly citing contractual breaches

Barcelona have cancelled their pre-season friendly match against Vissel Kobe in Japan, citing contractual breaches by the promoter, while their two scheduled friendlies in South Korea are also at risk of suspension, the club said. The LaLiga champions were scheduled to play Japanese side Vissel Kobe on Sunday, and to play South Korea's FC Seoul on July 31 and Daegu FC on August 4. "Barcelona announces that it has been obliged to suspend its participation in the game scheduled for next Sunday in Japan due to serious contractual breaches on behalf of the promoter," Barca said in a statement on Wednesday. "Nevertheless, the club will consider readjusting the leg of the summer tour in South Korea," it said, "if certain conditions are met by the promoter. "If these conditions are met, then the club will travel to South Korea in the coming days. Barcelona regrets this incident and the impact it will have on the many, many Barca fans in Japan." In a statement on Thursday, Vissel Kobe apologised to fans. "We sincerely apologise for any concern this may cause to the many fans and related parties who were looking forward to this match," the J1 League club said. "Our club is working in collaboration with relevant parties to gather necessary information and take appropriate measures." Barcelona did not identify the promoter in its statement, but when the tour was first announced it had named them as the YASUDA Group. Reuters has contacted YASUDA for comment. The promoter for matches in South Korea, D-DRIVE, said on Thursday they wanted to make the remainder of the tour a success. "To our fans in Korea: please rest assured — D-DRIVE remain fully committed to making the rest of the tour a success. We will continue to do our utmost to deliver unforgettable matches," D-DRIVE CEO Seul Ham said in a statement.

DOJ to launch Taal Lake search for missing sabungeros this week

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin 'Boying' Remulla said the government is pushing to begin the search for the bodies of the missing sabungeros or cockfighting enthusiasts in Taal Lake within the week. Remulla said the operation would initially focus on a fishpond lease by one of the suspects. 'We're asking them to start this week. Our basic plan is to map it out and assess the condition so we can plan how to go about it,' he said. He did not specify which agency would lead the operation, but the secretary earlier said the Philippine Coast Guard and Philippine Navy could be tapped for technical diving operations. The search follows whistleblower Julie 'Dondon' Patidongan's claim that the bodies of the missing individuals were dumped in the lake. Remulla added that he is still waiting for a response from the Japanese government after seeking their assistance last week. Patidongan named businessman Atong Ang as the mastermind in the case. He also linked actress Gretchen Barretto to the disappearances.

PH seeks Japan's technical aid in searching for missing sabungeros

Justice Secretary Crispin 'Boying' Remulla has sought technical assistance from the Japanese government to help locate the bodies of missing sabungeros or cockfighting enthusiasts allegedly killed and dumped in Taal Lake. Remulla said he signed a letter requesting Japan's support for lakebed mapping and other technology to assist in the search operations. 'We need a scientific approach here. We cannot leave it to chance,' he said. The investigation is linked to the disappearance of over 30 individuals involved in the cockfighting industry, or sabong, in 2021. Interest in the unsolved cases resurfaced after a key witness, identified as Julie 'Dondon' Patidongan, claimed to know where the victims' bodies were submerged in the lake. Patidongan, a former mayoral candidate and former employee in the online cockfighting industry, has accused businessman Charlie 'Atong' Ang of masterminding the abductions. Ang has denied all allegations and filed charges of attempted robbery with violence and intimidation, grave threat, grave coercion, incrimination of innocent persons, and slander against Patidongan and Alan Bantiles alias 'Brown.' Remulla said multiple witnesses are now willing to testify about the alleged dumping of bodies in Taal Lake, which is located about two hours south of Metro Manila. He also confirmed that 15 unnamed personnel from the Philippine National Police (PNP) are under investigation and have been placed on restricted duty. 'They carried out the executions,' Remulla said. Taal Lake, home to an active island volcano, spans over 230 square kilometers and reaches depths of up to 172 meters.
