The ‘father of the internet' and hundreds of tech experts worry we'll rely on AI too much
The answer comes with a grim warning: Many tech experts worry that AI will make people worse at skills core to being human, such as empathy and deep thinking.
'I fear — for the time being — that while there will be a growing minority benefitting ever more significantly with these tools, most people will continue to give up agency, creativity, decision-making and other vital skills to these still-primitive AIs,' futurist John Smart wrote in an essay submitted for the university's nearly 300-page report, titled 'The Future of Being Human,' which was provided exclusively to CNN ahead of its publication Wednesday.
The concerns come amid an ongoing race to accelerate AI development and adoption that has attracted billions of dollars in investment, along with both skepticism and support from governments around the world. Tech giants are staking their businesses on the belief that AI will change how we do everything — working, communicating, searching for information — and companies like Google, Microsoft and Meta are racing to build 'AI agents' that can perform tasks on a person's behalf. But experts warn in the report that such advancements could make people too reliant on AI in the future.
Already, the proliferation of AI has raised big questions about how humans will adapt to this latest technology wave, including whether it could lead to job losses or generate dangerous misinformation. The Elon University report further calls into question promises from tech giants that the value of AI will be in automating rote, menial tasks so that humans can spend more time on complex, creative pursuits.
Wednesday's report also follows research published this year by Microsoft and Carnegie Mellon University that suggested using generative AI tools could negatively impact critical thinking skills.
Elon University researchers surveyed 301 tech leaders, analysts and academics, including Vint Cerf, one of the 'fathers of the internet' and now a Google vice president; Jonathan Grudin, University of Washington Information School professor and former longtime Microsoft researcher and project manager; former Aspen Institute executive vice president Charlie Firestone; and tech futurist and Futuremade CEO Tracey Follows. Nearly 200 of the respondents wrote full-length essay responses for the report.
More than 60% of the respondents said they expect AI will change human capabilities in a 'deep and meaningful' or 'fundamental, revolutionary' way over the next 10 years. Half said they expect AI will create changes to humanity for the better and the worse in equal measure, while 23% said the changes will be mostly for the worse. Just 16% said changes will be mostly for the better (the remainder said they didn't know or expected little change overall).
The respondents also predicted that AI will cause 'mostly negative' changes to 12 human traits by 2035, including social and emotional intelligence, capacity and willingness to think deeply, empathy, and application of moral judgment and mental well-being.
Human capacity in those areas could worsen if people increasingly turn to AI for help with tasks such as research and relationship-building for convenience's sake, the report claims. And a decline in those and other key skills could have troubling implications for human society, such as 'widening polarization, broadening inequities and diminishing human agency,' the researchers wrote.
The report's contributors expect just three areas to experience mostly positive change: curiosity and capacity to learn, decision-making, and problem-solving and innovative thinking and creativity. Even in tools available today, programs that can generate artwork and solve coding problems are among the most popular. And many experts believe that while AI could replace some human jobs, it could also create new categories of work that don't yet exist.
Many of the concerns detailed in the report relate to how tech leaders predict people will incorporate AI into their daily lives by 2035.
Cerf said he expects humans will soon rely on AI agents, which are digital helpers that could independently do everything from taking notes during a meeting to making dinner reservations, negotiating complex business contracts or writing code. Tech companies are already rolling out early AI agent offerings — Amazon says its revamped Alexa voice assistant can order your groceries, and Meta is letting businesses create AI customer service agents to answer questions on its social media platforms.
Such tools could save people time and energy in everyday tasks while aiding with fields like medical research. But Cerf also worries about humans becoming 'increasingly technologically dependent' on systems that can fail or get things wrong.
'You can also anticipate some fragility in all of this. For example, none of this stuff works without electricity, right?' Cerf said in an interview with CNN. 'These heavy dependencies are wonderful when they work, and when they don't work, they can be potentially quite hazardous.'
Cerf stressed the importance of tools that help differentiate humans versus AI bots online, and transparency around the effectiveness of highly autonomous AI tools. He urged companies that build AI models to keep 'audit trails' that would let them interrogate when and why their tools get things wrong.
Futuremade's Follows told CNN that she expects humans' interactions with AI to move beyond the screens where people generally talk to AI chatbots today. Instead, AI technology will be integrated into various devices, such as wearables, as well as buildings and homes where humans can just ask questions out loud.
But with that ease of access, humans may begin outsourcing empathy to AI agents.
'AI may take over acts of kindness, emotional support, caregiving and charity fundraising,' Follows wrote in her essay. She added that 'humans may form emotional attachments to AI personas and influencers,' raising 'concerns about whether authentic, reciprocal relationships will be sidelined in favor of more predictable, controllable digital connection.'
Humans have already begun to form relationships with AI chatbots, to mixed effect. Some people have, for example, created AI replicas of deceased loved ones to seek closure, but parents of young people have also taken legal action after they say their children were harmed by relationships with AI chatbots.
Still, experts say people have time to curb some of the worst potential outcomes of AI through regulation, digital literacy training and simply prioritizing human relationships.
Richard Reisman, nonresident senior fellow at the Foundation for American Innovation, said in the report that the next decade marks a tipping point in whether AI 'augments humanity or de-augments it.'
'We are now being driven in the wrong direction by the dominating power of the 'tech-industrial complex,' but we still have a chance to right that,' Reisman wrote.

With the August 20 Made by Google event only a few weeks away, fans of Pixel phones will soon have to ask whether the new models are worth considering. A big factor in answering that question will be how many Google Pixel 10 Pro vs. Pixel 9 pro differences there are. The Google Pixel 9 Pro has proven to be a great phone, with the Pixel 9 Pro XL ranking as one of the best Android phones you can buy. Like its bigger brother, the Pixel 9 Pro offers a stellar AI experience, but in a compact, affordable package. With that in mind, we're expecting the Pixel 10 Pro to deliver much of the same, with some possible improvements to AI features, performance, battery life and charging. However, with Google shrinking the screen size on its Pro model to 6.3 inches — if you wanted a bigger screen, you had to pay $1,099 for the 6.8-inch Pixel 9 Pro XL — you could be excused if you thought you were getting more for less. Now the good news: the Pixel 10 Pro price is expected to stay the same, at least according to rumors ahead of the Made by Google event taking place on August 20 where we're expecting to see Google's next flagship lineup.. But there's some bad news, too. The Pixel 10 Pro XL price is expected to start at $1,119. That's not a price hike strictly speaking, as the rumor claims Google is dropping the 128GB model of its XL phone, and starting with a 256GB version. Nevertheless, if the rumor is true, you'll be paying for to get a Pixel 10 Pro XL than you would for the Pixel 9 Pro XL. So far, we've seen several leaked images of the Pixel 10 Pro, which gives us a reasonable idea of what the phone will look like. For the most part, it appears that Google isn't going to change the design all that much from the Pixel 9 Pro's look. That said, the edges of the Google Pixel 10 Pro could be slightly more rounded, though the phones' distinctive camera bar remains in place. Similarly, screen sizes are expected to be unchanged on the Pixel 10 Pro (6.3 inches) and the Pixel 10 Pro XL (6.8 inches). But there are indications that the Pixel 10 Pro models could feature 480Hz Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) dimming, a feature aimed at reducing eye strain and fatigue. If this rumor turns out to be accurate, then the Google Pixel 10 Pro would be easier to use for long periods of time. The biggest noticeable change with the Pixel 10 Pro models over their Pixel 9 equivalents could be the weight of the phones, as the Google Pixel 10 series is rumored to be heavier than its predecessors. However, there's a good reason for that: Google is reportedly including Qi2.2 charging magnets with the Pixel 10 models, so you'll be able to securely attach them to wireless charging pads. So far, the rumors point to few changes to the cameras on the Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL. This would mean that with both phones, you're getting the same 50MP wide-angle camera, 48MP ultrawide, and 48MP 5x telephoto lens found on the Pixel 9 Pro models. Presumably, the new phones would retain the 42MP selfie camera up front as well. That would be good news in a sense, as the Pixel 9 Pro cameras take excellent photos — see our Pixel 9 Pro vs. Galaxy S25 Ultra camera comparison for the proof — but it wouldn't give you much incentive to upgrade from recent Pixel flagships. That said, Google could be planning to make bigger changes to the camera performance via software updates and new AI features, something we'll likely hear more about during the Made by Google launch event. Pixel phones aren't known for being the most powerful devices on the block, with Google-designed Tensor silicon trailing chipsets from Qualcomm and Apple in benchmark tests. Then again, Google typically puts a focus on the neural capabilities of its Tensor system-on-chip, which has helped the company win many an AI phone face-off. However, the Tensor G5 chipset slated for the Pixel 10 series could see a bit of a performance boost. One rumor has the chip using a a 3nm process, which would be an upgrade over the 4nm Tensor G4 that results in more densely packed transistors for better performance and power efficiency. Still, not everyone thinks that will happen. The Tensor G5 will almost certainly introduce new AI capabilities to Google's latest phones. One possibility leaking out so far is an updated assistant called Pixel Sense. Supposedly, this new assistant will be able to offer users a more personalized experience based on how they use their phone. We're also expecting the Pixel 10 Pro to launch with Android 16 and the Material 3 Expressive user interface at launch. Other than that, we're hoping more AI-based features will be announced during the Made by Google event. There are a lot of factors that go into how long a phone lasts, but battery size is a good indicator. On that note, we have seen rumors that Google is planning to increase the battery in the Google Pixel 10 Pro to 4,870 mAh compared to the 4,700 mAh seen in the current Google Pixel 9 Pro. The Pixel 10 Pro XL's battery is supposed to reach 5,200 mAh, up from the Pixel 9 Pro XL's 5,060 mAh power pack. We've also heard rumors that the Extreme Battery Saver feature on the Google Pixel 10 Pro will give the phone around 100 hours of charge. In comparison, the Google Pixel 9 Pro manages around 72 hours when using the feature. On the charging front, the Pixel 10 Pro is still expected to keep a 29W wired and 15W wireless speed while the Pixel 10 Pro XL might get a boost to 39W wired charging, as Google looks for other ways to differentiate the XL model. There's still a lot we don't know about the Google Pixel 10 Pro ahead of Google's launch event. But at the moment, rumors indicate a modest improvement over the Pixel 9. That might dissuade recent upgraders from jumping to this year's model, especially since Google offers seven years of software support to its flagship phones. But if you've got an older phone, the changes to the Pixel 10 over the Pixel 9 may be what finally pushes you to upgrade. We'll know for certain once the Pixel 10 Pro becomes official on August 20.

Google Pixel 10 Pro tipped for gimmicky feature they should have ditched years ago
We may not have long to wait until the Pixel 10 launch event on August 20, but Google has already released a first look teaser at one of the upcoming phones — seemingly the Pixel 10 Pro. For the most part this phone looks pretty much the same as the Pixel 9 Pro, and that's a problem for me. Not that I have a particular dislike of the Pixel 9 design, quite the opposite. But for the fact that the phone still seems to have a temperature sensor alongside the camera. And that's a feature that should have been scrapped by now. If only because it's a gimmick that has overstayed its welcome. The Pixel temperature sensor is a feature that could have been useful, had it appeared three years earlier than it did. The Pixel 5 was released towards the end of 2020, back before COVID-19 vaccines were available and the virus was still a significantly bigger threat than it is today. Those of you that remember that time will likely remember having your temperature taken at one place or another. In a store, at an event, arriving at work, you name it. At that point a smartphone with a built in temperature sensor, especially one approved for medical use on humans, could have been a very big deal. Unfortunately the Pixel temperature sensor arrived on the Pixel 8 Pro in 2023. It's almost as though Google saw how useful such a feature could have been, and started work on it for a future phone. It's just unfortunate that by the end of 2023, the threat of COVID-19 has dropped significantly. Vaccines were available, lockdowns had ended, and while it never really went away, a lot of people had stopped worrying about the disease by that point. To make matters worse, the feature didn't even have FDA approval when the phone was released — that didn't happen until December, two months after release. Had the temperature sensor come bundled in on the Pixel 6 Pro, or even the Pixel 7 Pro, it could have proven its worth a little more than it already has. But the Pixel 8 Pro was released far too late. By late 2023, the need for such a feature was long gone. I've been using a Pixel 9 Pro, which also has a temperature sensor on the back, for almost a year now and I've found little need for a temperature sensor. Aside from some testing, and comparing the sensor to a thermal camera add-on, I'm not sure I've ever even used it. Aside from using food, I just don't have any need to regularly check the temperature of people or things. Maybe food, but I sure as heck am not sticking my phone into a partially cooked meal to see how much more time it needs. While the Pixel 10 Pro is only the third time the temperature sensor has been included on a Google phone, I can't help but think it's overstayed its welcome. Maybe I'm just the wrong target audience for it, but I feel like anyone who desperately needs to measure temperatures would probably just buy a dedicated thermometer — especially if it was for use with humans. The way I see it, the temperature sensor feels like a waste of money and resources — and Google would be better off utilizing the effort elsewhere. Whether that's for adding new AI features, improving staples like camera quality and battery life, or with some new piece of hardware that has better potential for success. Considering we've seen multiple Pixel price hikes in the past few years, it's strange that Google hasn't tried to trim the fat and cut costs. The lower price tag was one of the key selling points of buying a Google phone, even if Pixels weren't nearly as affordable as the old Nexus lineup. There are plenty of other benefits, like the exclusive features and first access to Android updates, but we can't ignore the fact that the ever-increasing cost of Pixel phones makes them a lot less appealing. If Google can save a little bit of money, by scrapping a feature that it really doesn't need to keep pursuing, and pass that saving onto the customers, it would be of benefit to everyone. But that hasn't happened, and I suspect it won't happen until we get another significant redesign to the flagship Pixel hardware. Considering the Pixel 9 series was a major deviation from the previous 3 generations, I can't see that happening anytime soon. There is a reason why Google has kept the temperature sensor around on Pixel phones, even if it doesn't seem like a particularly logical choice. We just don't know what that reason is, and so far Google hasn't been quick to volunteer an answer. Still, I can't help but feel like the temperature sensor is the kind of feature that should have been scrapped already. Like the Pixel 4's Motion Sense gesture recognition feature, it should have been a one and done piece of hardware. Because it's just not the kind of thing anyone needs to have on their phone, especially now that we're not trying to dodge exposure to a deadly virus on a daily basis. But hey, I guess I'll just have to continue not using the temperature sensor and hope that Google realizes the Pixel 11 could probably go without. At the very least I'm happy to hear rumors that the Pixel 10 could finally offer Qi2 magnetic charging, under the name "PixelSnap."
