Huge 2.8-hectare 'Demon Slayer' anime rice paddy art project planned, Tanjiro will be eaten

"Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train" turned out to have the momentum of a runaway locomotive at the box office. Despite being released during the pandemic, the theatrical anime adaptation of "Demon Slayer's Mugen Train" arc went on to become the highest-grossing film ever in Japan, bringing in more than 40 billion yen in ticket sales and surpassing Studio Ghibli's "Spirited Away" and "Titanic" in the all-time charts.
So suffice it to say that the next "Demon Slayer" anime movie, subtitled "Infinity Castle," is going to be a very big deal when it releases at theaters in Japan this summer. And to gear up for that very big deal, there's some very big Demon Slayer public art planned. However, this gigantic depiction of protagonist Tanjiro isn't going to be an oversized poster or skyscraper projection mapping, and is instead going to be made out of rice.
Yes the town of Gyoda, located about an hour north of downtown Tokyo, has chosen Tanjiro as their muse for the city's annual rice paddy art project. You might be wondering how you turn a rice paddy into art, and the trick is to plant different strains of rice in a carefully determined pattern, based on the color different stalks take on as they grow, so that each one becomes a purposeful part of a mosaic-like whole. It's a technique that lends itself especially well to Tanjiro and his iconic checkerboard-pattern costume, since rice stalks range in color from light green to dark, almost-black brown, like we saw when Gyoda showed off its "Dragon Quest" rice paddy art a few years back.
Gyoda isn't the only town in Japan that does rice paddy art, but it does have the official Guinness World Record for the largest rice paddy artwork. The exact length and width of the rice Tanjiro haven't been announced, but the organizers say it will cover an area of 28,000 square meters, or 2.8 hectares if you feel agricultural units are the most appropriate way to measure it.

The "Demon Slayer" rice paddy art should reach its most beautiful coloring in late July, right around "Infinity Castle's" July 18 release date.
As you can probably guess, the precision nature of the planting means that it's not something that can be entrusted to machinery. Rice paddy art has to be planted by hand, and to that end Gyoda is looking for "Demon Slayer" fans and/or rice enthusiasts interested in volunteering to help. Organizers are seeking a total of 300 people to plant on June 14, gathering at 8:30 a.m. and working until 'the work is finished,' with applications being accepted between now and April 25 online here. There's no pay or participation expense involved, but you will get a sack of rice mailed to you in December after the rice is harvested, making this an opportunity to not only make anime rice art, but to eat it too.

Pokémon Center Online tells all customers to change their passwords after fraudulent log-ins

Gotta change 'em all. The Pokémon Center Online should be a place of pure happiness. It's a massive selection of Pokémon merchandise, made available even to those who can't make the trip to one of Japan's physical Pokémon Center superstores. Just put the items you want in your cart, place your order, and wait for your package of Poké-joy to be delivered to your doorstep. Unfortunately, though, it's not all fun and smiles right now, because while fans have had their eyes on the Pokémon they want to catch, less wholesome types have been after something else, using unscrupulous means to acquire Pokémon Center Online users' log-in data. The online store announced on July 3 that it has confirmed a series of unauthorized log ins. In addition to performing emergency maintenance to address the problem, the Pokémon Center Online has taken the step of resetting the passwords of all user accounts. Because of that, users with existing accounts will have to go through the password reset process before they can log in again. The procedure can be initiated through the Pokémon Center Online website here and requires entering your birthdate and the email address associated with your account, after which you'll receive an email with further instructions on how to choose a new account password. The Pokémon Center Online strongly cautions against reusing the same password as before the reset, and also against using a password identical to ones used for other online services. The announcement makes no specific mention of fraudulent purchases that have been made, but keeping a close eye on charges for any credit card used for shopping though the site is probably a good idea, just to make sure no one has treated themselves to a life-size Eeveelution plushie on your dime/10-yen coin. FamilyMart service brings Hokkaido goods to your local convenience store

By Krista Rogers, SoraNews24 For those who can't get enough of the convenience of Japanese convenience stores, the FamilyMart chain is adding to the fun with FamilyMart Online ('Famima Online'). This service gives access to exclusive goods that can only be ordered online and picked up at your local FamilyMart store location, of which there are 16,300 store locations nationwide. One of Famima Online's ongoing campaigns is giving people access to regional foods and famous local products from throughout Japan. The current theme, lasting through July 7, is Hokkaido. As you can probably imagine, it comes with plenty of choices of tasty treats from up north as detailed below. Products that are part of the campaign were selected by the National Federation of Agricultural Co-operative Associations – known as Zen-Oh for short – as well as by Famima Online representatives. Omakase Vegetable Set (7,199 yen) For this set, Hokkaido-based company Kururu no Mori is providing a selection of 10-12 fresh and seasonal fresh vegetables delivered in refrigerated packaging. As it's an omakase, or 'leave it up to us' package, the specific contents may vary slightly from shipment to shipment. Assortment of northern pickled fish (5,866 yen) What better way to cool down than with some Hokkaido fish? This set comes with four kinds of pickled fish: ● Salmon pickled with salted koji rice ● Salmon pickled with green onions and miso ● Cod pickled with salted koji rice ● Mackerel pickled with green onions and miso Kabocha snow pudding (Six jars for 6,333 yen) This Japanese-pudding from Kafukudo Kitchen is made using the uncommon Yukigesho ('snow blanket') kabocha squash from Assabu, Hokkaido. The squash is sieved twice to result in a luxuriously smooth texture. Impressively, it won the top prize at the 32nd Hokkaido Processed Food Contest. Furano Melon (5,533 yen per melon) Hokkaido is known for melons, and this refreshingly sweet, deep orange variety from the city of Furano doesn't disappoint. Its flavor is said to be exquisite due to the perfect temperatures where it's grown. Assorted cheeses (6,645 yen) Dairy products are also Hokkaido's jam, and this selection of four varieties, courtesy of producer Toit Vert, is the perfect way to say thank you to the northern cows. The set comes with blue cheese, cream cheese, white blue cheese, and Camembert cheese. The one potential hurdle to using Famima Online is that it requires you to use FamilyMart's FamiPay app for ordering and the website for Famima Online doesn't appear to be accessible from certain locations outside of Japan. If you're in the country and have the app, though, you'll definitely want to take advantage of this easy way to sample the best of what Hokkaido has to offer.
