
M&S has more to worry about than its recent hacker attack
To borrow a phrase from the retailer's famous food ads, Marks and Spencer Group Plc has been hit hard by the spate of hacks of retailers' information-technology systems.
The company said on Wednesday the incident last month, which it described as 'highly sophisticated', would cost it about £300mil or about US$402mil in operating profit in the year to March 2026, before any cost savings, or recovery under insurance policies, which could be half of the total.
The retailer needs to convince investors that the worst is behind it.
Hyperactive chief executive officer Stuart Machin said he will use the incident as an opportunity to modernise M&S faster and more extensively, compressing two years of technology progress into six months.
He needs to show that M&S is finally getting a handle on the situation and can get back on track – and quickly.
The financial impact from the cyberattack overshadowed a successful year for the high street stalwart.
Pre-tax profit before one-time charges in the year to March 29 rose to £875.5mil, the highest for 15 years years, from £716.4mil in the year earlier.
The company also had net cash of £437.8mil at the end of the financial year, before lease liabilities, showing how the it has strengthened its balance sheet.
Although the current financial year began well, the incident forced M&S to pause online sales in fashion, beauty and home furnishings. The company expects disruption to continue through June and July, although Machin said he hoped to restore services earlier.
Bloated inventories
Stores have continued to be busy, but the company expects to incur 'increased stock management costs'. In other words, it will have to discount bloated inventories.
In food, it has been hurt by gaps on shelves, although this has now improved.
It has also incurred higher waste and logistics costs, because it has had to operate many tasks manually.
The problems could not have come at a worse time. Britain has basked in a rare heatwave, which has driven shoppers to buy summer dresses, shorts and sandals. Next Plc last week upgraded its profit forecast after the warm conditions lifted sales. It may also be benefiting from M&S' woes.
While the cyber incident will naturally capture attention, it isn't the only question mark over M&S' continued progress.
It has endured a series of management departures since Machin became chief executive three years ago.
The latest to leave is Richard Price, managing director of clothing, home and beauty, who was instrumental to M&S' fashion turnaround. He has been replaced by former Primark and Boohoo executive John Lyttle.
But the biggest potential challenge would be when Archie Norman, chairman, and the architect of its recovery, eventually steps down.
He took on the role in 2017, so is approaching nine years on the board, the recommended maximum tenure.
While M&S' food business has been flying, it still needs to stem losses at its online joint venture with Ocado Group Plc.
On Wednesday M&S announced a non-cash charge of £248.5mil on its investment in Ocado Retail.
Finally, while M&S has no doubt made strides in its business, for example making its clothes more fashionable and making its food better value for money, it has been helped by the broader retail backdrop.
Many competitors, such as Debenhams and Arcadia's brands including Top Shop and Dorothy Perkins have left the high street. The John Lewis Partnership, owner of John Lewis department stores and Waitrose have also struggled.
Competition awaits
But now John Lewis has a seasoned retailer, Jason Tarry, as chairman and a talented executive, Peter Ruis, running the department store arm. John Lewis will become more of a threat.
M&S shares have lost close to 10% since it announced the cyber attack on April 22. Ironically, they had just topped 400 pence, a psychological level for investors, as this is what Philp Green was believed to have offered for the group in 2004.
M&S trades on a forward price-earnings ratio of about 12 times, a significant discount to Next's about 18 times. To close the gap, Machin needs to convince investors that the incident is as he describes it a 'bump in the road', and that M&S will emerge stronger.
Otherwise, the retailer will go back to the archives in another way: Just when the household name finally gets its act together, it goes off the rails again. —Bloomberg

US' long-term debt problems may get worse
President Donald Trump's tax-cut and spending bill, which passed Congress on Thursday, averts the near-term prospect of a United States government default but makes America's long-term debt problems even worse. Republican lawmakers in the House of Representatives approved the bill that will extend Trump's 2017 tax cuts, authorise more spending on border security and the military, make steep cuts in Medicare and Medicaid – and add trillions to the government's debt. Trump signed the bill into law on July 4. As part of the tax package, lawmakers raised the government's US$36.1 trillion borrowing limit that it was projected to hit later this summer by US$5 trillion — a move that will assuage concerns over a possible default on US debt. Analysts had estimated the so-called X-date, when the Treasury would no longer be able to pay all of its obligations without an increase or suspension of the debt limit, could have occurred at the end of August or in early September. Longer term, however, the bill has largely been seen as bad news for the US bond market and the nation's fiscal health. It will add US$3.4 trillion to the nation's debt over the next decade, nonpartisan analysts have estimated. That would exacerbate concerns about additional bond supply and dwindling demand for US Treasuries that have been a key driver of financial markets in recent months. "The bill contributes to some of the structural concerns around Treasuries, with respect to, No. 1, fiscal deficit and elevated debt levels, and No. 2, inflation," said Mike Medeiros, macro strategist at Wellington Management. BlackRock said last Monday that foreign buyers were already souring on American debt. There was a real risk that demand for the US$500 billion in debt the US issues every week will fall even more and push borrowing costs higher. The bill is projected to reduce tax revenues by US$4.5 trillion, reduce spending by US$1.2 trillion and cost 10.9 million people their federal health insurance over the next decade, according to estimates from the Congressional Budget Office. The legislation also stokes economic growth by allowing businesses to fully expense equipment purchases as well as research and development costs, and provides other tax breaks. Some investors, however, worry the debt overhang could curtail the economic stimulus in the bill, which Trump refers to as the "One Big Beautiful Bill". "We believe the One Big Beautiful Bill will accelerate corporate earnings growth, which ultimately will drive equity values," said Ellen Hazen, chief market strategist at F.L. Putnam Investment Management. "But this could lead to higher-for-longer Treasury rates, making many fixed-income investments somewhat less attractive over the longer term," she said. Benchmark 10-year Treasury yields were higher on Wednesday after days of decline. By raising the US federal borrowing limits, the bill removes the low-probability but high-impact risk of a US debt default, which could have catastrophic consequences for global markets. In recent weeks, the interest rate on some Treasury debt due in August had risen more than yields of short-term Treasury bills coming due around the same time, a sign investors were getting nervous about the approaching X-date.

AirAsia signs US$12.25 billion deal for 50 A321XLRs with rights for 20 more
PETALING JAYA: AirAsia Bhd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Capital A Bhd, has signed a landmark agreement with Airbus valued at US$12.25 billion (RM51.75 billion) for 50 A321XLRs with rights for 20 more. With the agreement, the airline is taking a major step towards becoming the world's first low-cost narrow-body network carrier, anchored by its multi-hub strategy. The aircraft are scheduled for delivery from 2028 through 2032. Witnessed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the agreement was signed in Paris on Friday between Capital A CEO Tan Sri Tony Fernandes and Airbus Commercial Aircraft CEO Christian Scherer. Fernandes, who is also adviser and steward of AirAsia Group, said: 'We pioneered low-cost travel in Asia – now we are taking it to the next level. AirAsia is on a transformative journey to become the world's first low-cost network carrier. This is about exponential growth, connecting geographies beyond Asean, and making flying even more democratic. Malaysia's fiscal position improving as consolidation efforts start to pay off: Economist
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's fiscal consolidation efforts are beginning to bear fruit, with measures to narrow the deficit and reduce government debt gaining traction despite criticism, signalling a positive outlook for the country's sovereign credit ratings. 'Our foreign reserves have risen to US$119.9 billion (RM507 billion) from US$115.5 billion in the first half of 2025, while foreign ownership of Malaysian Government Securities increased to 35.6% in May from 32% in January. 'This reflects a positive view of the government of Malaysia's creditworthiness,' Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid told Bernama. Although the country's fiscal position is improving, with the deficit narrowing to 4.5% of gross domestic product (GDP) from 5.7% previously, he highlighted that for the rakyat, fiscal consolidation translates to larger allocations for government assistance programmes, including the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) and Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR). As of the first half of 2025, Malaysia's fiscal deficit has improved to RM34 billion, compared to RM46 billion in the same period last year. 'The government coffers are improving as fiscal consolidation progresses. The government allocated RM13 billion for the STR and Sara programmes in 2025, the highest ever distributed for cash aid in Malaysia, compared to RM10 billion last year,' Mohd Afzanizam said. He further stated that the number of cash aid recipients had increased to 5.4 million from the previous 700,000 beneficiaries, showing that the assistance is now being better targeted rather than disbursed through blanket subsidies. Mohd Afzanizam noted that this could potentially lead to a more favourable credit review, with Malaysia's current sovereign credit ratings standing at A3 (Moody's), A- (S&P Global Ratings), and BBB+ (Fitch Ratings). 'The realignment of subsidies and continued fiscal consolidation will eventually yield positive outcomes and improve the government's financial position,' he added. Transitioning to external factors, Mohd Afzanizam said the global environment has a bearing on Malaysia's economic outlook, particularly developments in the United States. He pointed out that the US is no longer rated triple-A across the board, with current sovereign credit ratings at Aa1 (Moody's), AA+ (S&P Global Ratings), and AA+ (Fitch Ratings). 'This signals that the US government's ability to manage its debt is not as strong as before. 'All three major rating agencies now classify US debt around AA+ or Aa1, reflecting rising concerns over fiscal deficits, mounting debt levels and political gridlock.' Mohd Afzanizam said the erosion of credit strength reduces the appeal of US assets and accelerates global de-dollarisation trends. 'Geopolitical tensions are also contributing to this shift, as more countries look to diversify their trade partnerships and reduce reliance on the US dollar.' He also cautioned that recent US policy proposals could place further downward pressure on the greenback, citing the US Senate's proposal involving tax cuts totalling US$4.5 trillion, to be funded by reductions in social spending, including healthcare aid programmes, and clean energy subsidies. 'The tax cuts mainly benefit high-income earners, who generally have a lower marginal propensity to consume. They tend to spend more on luxury items rather than everyday goods, so the stimulus effect on GDP growth may be limited,' Mohd Afzanizam explained. He warned that, combined with new US tariff measures, the policy could increase business costs and consumer prices, potentially weighing on long-term economic growth. 'I believe the US dollar is on a weaker long-term trajectory due to several structural factors,' he concluded. On Friday, the ringgit closed at 4.2180/2260 against the greenback, having appreciated by 5.8% since the beginning of the year.
