Sabah sailing scene gains global traction

Published on: Friday, July 25, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jul 25, 2025 Text Size: Joniston mingles with the participants during the event. - Pic by CMD TUARAN: Sabah is gaining international recognition as a sailing destination, with more than 100 sailors and 29 yachts from 16 countries taking part in the Dalit Bay Nautica 2025. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the growing popularity of nautical tourism could soon make it a major draw for visitors to the state. He noted that Sabah's natural advantages - its coastline, waterways, and scenic beaches—position it well to offer unique sailing experiences. The Chief Minister's speech, delivered by Assistant Tourism, Cultural and Environment Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, highlighted the potential of Dalit Beach to become a world-class tourist destination. He added that sailing events like this could spur economic activity, promote Sabah's cultural heritage, and raise the State's profile globally. The event also supports the State's target of 3.5 million tourist arrivals this year, contributing to a more diverse tourism sector. Hajiji said Sabah's natural landscapes, from oceans to mountains, continue to attract nature lovers and adventurers from around the world. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? University College Sabah Foundation, Sabah Birdwatchers Association ink birding certification module

Kota Kinabalu: A new birding certification module is now in place following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between University College Sabah Foundation (UCSF) and the Sabah Birdwatchers Association (SBA). State Tourism, Culture and Environment Assistant Minister cum Sabah Tourism Board Chairman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai said the introduction of the module is timely, as birdwatching is fast becoming a promising segment in Sabah's tourism landscape. 'According to birding experts, the UK alone has around six million active birders, while the number across Europe is estimated to be close to 10 million 'If we can attract even one per cent of that market, it would be a strong start for Sabah,' he said after witnessing the signing ceremony, on Wednesday. 'The figures show clear potential and that Sabah is moving in the right direction to tap into this growing niche,' he added. UCSF Vice-Chancellor Datuk Dr Rafiq Idris and Sabah Birdwatchers Association president Ronald Pudin signed the MoU, which also marked the launch of the module titled 'Discover the Birds of Borneo: Sabah's Feathered Jewel', which aims to train and certify local birding enthusiasts and tour guides. Supported by the STB, the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to develop birdwatching into a structured and sustainable nature-based tourism product. Joniston said this reflects a shared commitment to strengthen eco-tourism while creating job opportunities and boosting rural economies through birdwatchers who tend to spend more, stay longer, and visit lesser-known areas. 'I hope that the module will encourage more rural youth to explore birding and gain valuable skills that could lead to meaningful livelihood opportunities. 'By training locals to become bird guides, we are helping them discover new income streams and encouraging long-term stewardship of the environment. 'When communities see value in protecting their forests and wetlands, they are more likely to participate in conservation efforts, and that's the kind of sustainable tourism we want to encourage,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Tour de France shortens stage 19 after cattle disease outbreak forces route change

Published on: Friday, July 25, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jul 25, 2025 By: Reuters Text Size: UAE Team Emirates XRG's Tadej Pogacar in action during stage 18 REUTERS/Benoit Tessier TPX IMAGES OF THE DAY FRIDAY'S Stage 19 of the Tour de France has been shortened after an outbreak of contagious nodular dermatitis in cattle near the Col des Saisies forced authorities to cull livestock and restrict access to the area, race organisers said on Thursday. The 129.9-km stage from Albertville to La Plagne was due to include the ascent of the Col des Saisies, but the climb has now been scrapped to avoid the affected zone, ASO said in a statement. 'In light of the distress experienced by the affected farmers and in order to preserve the smooth running of the race, it has been decided, in agreement with the relevant authorities, to modify the route,' ASO said. The ceremonial start will take place as planned in Albertville, followed by a 7-km neutralised section before the official start an hour later than planned. Riders will rejoin the original course shortly before Beaufort, at the 52.4-km mark of the initial route. As a result, the stage will now be reduced to 95 km. The shortened stage still finishes in La Plagne and comes just two days before the Tour concludes in Paris on Sunday. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
