Cincinnati Bearcats football will kick off season Aug. 28 on ESPN at 9 p.m. with Nebraska
It was announced Tuesday, May 13 that the Bearcats and Cornhuskers will kick off at 9 p.m. (Eastern) with the Thursday night primetime showdown televised on ESPN.
GEHA Field at Arrowhead is the home of the four-time Super Bowl-winning Kansas City Chiefs and Bearcat great Travis Kelce. Current UC tight end Joe Royer surpassed Kelce's single-season reception record for tight ends last season with 50 catches.

The Cincinnati Bearcats will host Nebraska on the field Aug. 28 to start their 2025 season.
Cincinnati Bearcats will be home team in Kansas City
The Bearcats will serve as the designated home team for the game at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, and UC will still play seven home games inside Nippert Stadium in 2025, including welcoming five conference opponents: Arizona, BYU, Baylor, Iowa State and UCF.

As The Enquirer reported last fall, UC was approached by the Arrowhead group and was essentially able to double its money by moving the game to Kansas City, while getting 75% of each ticket sold. The home of the Chiefs since 1972, Arrowhead's football capacity is 76,416.
The game evolved from Nippert Stadium to Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis to Arrowhead.
"We weren't looking to move it, didn't want to move it from Indy but got a cold call from Arrowhead and a group that was looking to put a game together," UC AD John Cunningham said last November. "We didn't know if they could get us to where we needed to go financially, but they did. We feel like we can get close to doubling our revenues. In this day and age, business decisions have to be made and this was one we needed to make."
The Cincinnati Bearcats and Nebraska Cornhuskers kick off Thursday, Aug. 28 at 9 p.m. (Eastern) at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. UC will serve as the home team and will still have seven home dates in Cincinnati at Nippert Stadium.
UC, Nebraska last met nearly 119 years ago
This will mark the second meeting between UC and Nebraska. The Cornhuskers defeated the Bearcats, 41-0, on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 29, 1906.

Nebraska was 7-6 last season, winning the Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl in Yankee Stadium 20-15 over Boston College. They shared one common opponent with UC as both teams played Colorado. Nebraska beat the Buffaloes 28-10 in Lincoln last Sept. 7. UC lost in Boulder, 34-23 later in the season on Oct. 26.
Nebraska coach Matt Rhule reacts during the second half of his team's game against Boston College during the 2024 Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium. Rhule was 7-6 last year as the Cornhuskers won the bowl game. He is 12-13 overall in two seasons at Nebraska. The Cornhuskers play Cincinnati Aug. 28 in Kansas City at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.
Nebraska's Matt Rhule stirs pot
Rhule is 12-13 at Nebraska in two seasons after going 11-27 with the Carolina Panthers between 2020-2022. Before that he was 19-20 at Baylor and Big 12 Coach of the Year in 2019. Prior to Baylor, he was 28-23 at Temple from 2013-2016.
At a recent Nebraska press conference, he ruffled some Big 12 feathers when comparing play in the Big Ten and SEC:

'There are lots of kids I would love to recruit that have committed to a Big 12 school or somewhere else like that, come to camp,' Rhule said. 'If you want to play in the Big 12 over the Big Ten, I got it, but make no mistake, there's a big difference.
"The Big 12 is gonna go nuts now, I know that. I'm gonna be on X and all that stuff, but it's the reality. The Big Ten and the SEC, especially moving forward, are going to be here [higher] than everyone else.'
UC's Bearcats will have a chance to change Rhule's mind in about three months. Tickets for the UC/Nebraska game are available at https://gobearcats.evenue.net/events/NEB.

Former Texas A&M QB discusses nearly traumatic leg injury, and his road back to the field
Former Texas A&M quarterback Max Johnson, who transferred to College Station after two seasons with LSU before the 2022 season, left the program, gaining immense respect from the Aggie fan base who watched him play through several injuries, including broken ribs at the end of the 2023 campaign. Johnson, who is the son of Super Bowl-winning quarterback Brad Johnson, has never shied away from competition, choosing Texas A&M over a host of programs that would have started him right away, instead of playing behind former A&M QBs Haynes King and Conner Weigman to start his Aggie career. However, both players dealt with injury issues, vaulting Johnson into the starting lineup. In two seasons at Texas A&M, Johnson appeared in 12 games, while his best string of performances came during the 2023 season, throwing for 1,452 yards, nine touchdowns and five interceptions, while, as I stated above, played with broken ribs during the close road close to Ole Miss, which is likely resulted in former head coach Jimbo Fisher's dismissal. With Conner Weigman returning, paired with current starting quarterback Marcel Reed behind him, Johnson once again entered the transfer portal, choosing North Carolina as his final collegiate destination. However, during the Tar Heels' opening game of the 2024 season against Minnesota, Johnson's brutal leg injury ended his year before it truly began. After a video showed the senior signal caller looking healthy during one of his many throwing sessions this offseason, Johnson recently spoke to the media during the first week of North Carolina's preseason, revealing that his road back to health was more complicated than all of us had assumed. According to journalist Chris Mason, Johnson had five surgeries after his leg injury, which occurred back on August 29, 2024. 'There was a point in time where I thought I was going to lose my leg.' Max Johnson's toughness has never been in doubt, and this further proves that first-year North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick is in good hands at the position, especially from a leadership perspective. North Carolina will open the 2025 season at home against TCU on Monday, September 1. Johnny Manziel Sounds Off on Philadelphia Eagles' Superfan
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. As the Philadelphia Eagles navigated through their successful 2024 Super Bowl run, 'Million Dollaz Worth of Game' host Gillie Da King became the team's biggest hype man. Although the Super Bowl run is over, Gillie is still taking his victory lap as a fan. Recently, he rubbed in the Eagles' Super Bowl victory, trading shots with Cam Newton. "Cam ain't never had one of these!" said Gillie, who was holding the Lombardi Trophy. "I ain't going back and forth with you. Thank you, Jalen! Appreciate you, Jalen! The viral video of Gillie calling out Newton caused former NFL quarterback Johnny Manziel to step up and sound off on the podcast host. "Yo @gilliedakid you may be the biggest [expletive] loser on the planet," Manziel wrote on X. "Talking like you've [expletive] done anything on a football field. If I see you just know I'm going to slap the [expletive] out of you, trust." Johnny Manziel throws a pass during half time of the spring game at Kyle Field on April 24, 2021 in College Station, Texas. Johnny Manziel throws a pass during half time of the spring game at Kyle Field on April 24, 2021 in College Station, then followed up by expressing his "love" for Gillie's podcast, but making it clear he didn't appreciate the comments towards Newton. While eagerly waiting for Gillie's response, Manziel publicly stated he would like to "set up the Rough & Rowdy" and "call it a day." Rough & Rowdy is a boxing promotion owned by Barstool Sports. It is promoted as "boxing chaos like you've never seen before." The Gillie-Newton situation stems from the former Carolina Panthers quarterback's criticism over Jalen Hurts' standing as a top quarterback in the NFL. As the Eagles' passer just wrapped up a Super Bowl-winning season, where he was named the game's MVP, Hurts still hasn't gained recognition as a top five quarterback in the league, for the most part. Read More: Famous Eagles Fan Trades Shots With Cam Newton Over Jalen Hurts Debate Cam Newton recently explained why he believes that Hurts shouldn't even be placed in the top ten. "Jalen Hurts is a great quarterback, but if we're talking about what they bring to the table, it's hard to judge what Jalen Hurts can do when you're throwing to a guy like AJ Brown, DeVonta Smith, you have tight end skillset, you have a dominant defense, the best running back in the game. Download Madden and see how many stars are on the offensive side of Philly," said Newton "Jalen Hurts does not have to play elite for the Philadelphia Eagles to win. He has to play good—but he doesn't have to play elite. We're not asking you to win the game, we're just asking you not to lose it." Since Gillie, a Philly native, grew up as a fan of the Eagles and has been embraced as a high-profile supporter of the team, he felt he should defend Hurts by publicly calling out Newton on multiple occasions. Manziel seems to be waiting impatiently for the podcaster's response. For more Philadelphia Eagles and NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports
