An assailant in Finland stabbed several people near a shopping center in the southern city of Tempere on Thursday afternoon, and one person was arrested, Finnish public broadcaster Yle reported.
It was not immediately clear how many people were injured in the attack, but police said the situation no longer posed a danger to others. Victims were given first aid at the scene. Yle said that one person was detained without giving further details. Video by Yle showed a heavy police presence and ambulances in front of the cordoned–off mall. Daily Finnish paper Aamulehti reported that police blocked all doors of the Ratina shopping mall, and people weren't allowed to enter or leave the center. Witnesses of the attack were taken to the second floor of the mall for questioning.
Yle also reported that employees from the social and crisis emergency services had arrived at the mall to attend to victims and bystanders.

Afghans in British defense ministry data breach to get compensation

LONDON: Afghans whose personal information was exposed in a UK Ministry of Defence data breach have been told they can claim up to £4,000 ($5,400) in compensation. The breach, which happened in September 2021, saw the email addresses of 265 Afghans who had worked with British forces mistakenly shared in a group email sent by the ministry's Afghan Relocation and Assistance Policy team. The message, intended to provide updates on evacuation plans, used the 'To' field instead of the blind carbon copy function, which revealed names, email addresses and in some cases thumbnail profile images. On Friday, Armed Forces Minister Lord Coaker confirmed the compensation scheme in a written statement to Parliament, saying the ministry was taking a 'proactive' approach to what he described as a historical data-handling incident, The Times reported on Saturday. 'I can confirm to members the Ministry of Defence will be directly contacting those individuals who were affected by the data incident,' he said. 'Once a response is received and the affected individual's identity confirmed, a single ex gratia payment of up to £4,000 per individual will be made.' The ministry expects the total cost to be about £1.6 million. 'Every effort will be made to ensure payments are made as quickly as reasonably practical,' Coaker said. 'I cannot undo past mistakes but I wish to assure members that in my role as minister for the armed forces I intend to drive improvement in the department's data handling training and practices.' The ministry's record on such issues 'must improve and I am determined to ensure it does,' he said. The breach was condemned at the time by then shadow defense secretary John Healey, who said: 'We told these Afghan interpreters we would keep them safe, instead this breach has needlessly put lives at risk.' In December 2023, the Information Commissioner's Office fined the ministry £350,000 over the incident. UK Information Commissioner John Edwards described it as 'a particularly egregious breach of the obligation of security owed to these people, thus warranting the financial penalty my office imposes today.' 'This deeply regrettable data breach let down those to whom our country owes so much,' he said. Following the incident, the ministry contacted those affected and asked them to delete the original email, change their contact details and inform the ARAP team using a secure form. Concerns were raised at the time that the information could have fallen into the hands of the Taliban.

One dead, six wounded in Indianapolis shooting

One person was killed and six others wounded in a shooting in the US city of Indianapolis early Saturday, police said, a day after the country celebrated its independence day. The shooting occurred around 1:27 am (0527 GMT) as officers were investigating disturbances, deputy police operations chief Tanya Terry told a news conference. One was pronounced dead at the scene. Five wounded people were taken from the scene to hospital for treatment, while a sixth walked into a medical facility in a stable condition. Three of the victims were juveniles, including the person who died, Terry said, without providing the ages and conditions of the other victims. Police recovered several firearms at the scene and detained around seven people for questioning. Indianapolis police chief Chris Bailey condemned recurring violence in the city's downtown area, particularly involving young people. 'A kid is dead tonight,' Bailey told reporters. 'It's unacceptable.' The police chief said officers made about 20 arrests throughout the night and recovered guns from minors, including 'an assault rifle stuffed in the front of his pants.' Bailey criticized parents for allowing 'hundreds of unsupervised kids' to roam the downtown area at night. 'We are not your children's keeper. You are,' he said. 'Parents and guardians have got to step up.' The chief said thousands of people had come downtown for fireworks and left peacefully, but others stayed and 'caused trouble.' The shooting marked the second weekend of violence in downtown Indianapolis, according to the police chief. Serious gun violence is common across the United States, where many states have few barriers to the purchasing of firearms, despite widespread support for greater gun control. There have been 189 mass shootings in the United States this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive -- which it defines as four or more people shot.

Escaped lion attacks woman and children in Pakistan street

LAHORE: An escaped pet lion chased a woman and two children down a busy street in Pakistan's Lahore, police said Friday, with dramatic footage showing the big cat leaping a wall before pouncing on them. CCTV footage released by the police showed the lion jumping the barrier around its home and pursuing a woman carrying her shopping on Thursday night. The lion jumped on her back, knocking her to the ground, the footage showed. A police report quoted the father as saying the lion then turned to his five-year-old and seven-year-old children, and clawed their arms and faces. All three were taken to hospital but were not in a critical condition. The owners who ran out of the house were 'amused to see their lion attack' the passersby, the father added in the report. Police said Friday they had arrested three men. 'The suspects fled from the spot, taking the lion with them. They were arrested within 12 hours of the incident,' the office of the Deputy Inspector General Operations in Lahore told AFP. The lion, an 11-month-old male, has been confiscated by police and sent to a wildlife park. Officials at the facility said that the animal appears to be in good health. Keeping exotic animals, especially big cats, as pets has long been seen as a sign of privilege and power in Punjab, the most populous province of the country. In December 2024, an adult lion escaped from its enclosure in another neighborhood of Lahore, terrorizing residents before being shot dead by a security guard. The incident prompted the provincial government to pass new laws regulating the sale, purchase, breeding and ownership of big cats. The law now requires owners to obtain licenses for the animals which are barred from being kept in residential areas. Breeders have to pay a hefty fee for registration, while farms have to be a minimum of 10 acres in size.
