Major League Baseball Players Association executive director Tony Clark talks to reporters March 5, 2025, about several topics in Lakeland, Florida.
Fresh off his second World Series title, Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts signed an extension with the organization worth $32.4 million over the next four years. That's an average annual value (AAV) of $8.1 million, pushing Roberts past Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell – five years, $40 million ($8 million AAV) – for the highest-paid manager in MLB.
This was not an unexpected deal. Roberts was heading into the final year of his contract, and with talks of the extension heating up in recent weeks, it was only a matter of time before the two parties came to an agreement. USA TODAY's Bob Nightengale noted, "Roberts was in the final year of his three-year contract extension that paid him $4 million this season and now doubles his contract, making him the highest-paid manager on an annual average value basis."
Still, despite the massive payday, Roberts is not one of the wealthiest managers/coaches in sports, which is surprising considering Roberts and Counsell earn significantly more than the third-highest-paid manager in MLB, Arizona's Torey Lovullo ($5 million).
Despite MLB being one of the largest professional sports organizations in the world, the wealthiest manager in the league's salary would barely make a dent compared with some of the larger contracts. Here's where Roberts ranks among coaches across major sports:

Where does Roberts rank among American coaches/managers?
Among American head coaches, Roberts boasts the 44th-largest salary, according to Sportico, with several NFL, NBA, college football and college basketball coaches ahead of him.
Highest paid managers in sports
NFL
Andy Reid (Kansas City) - $20 million
NBA
Steve Kerr (Golden State) - $17.5 million
College football
Kirby Smart (Georgia) - $13 million
College basketball
Bill Self (Kansas) - $10.6 million
MLS
Phil Neville (Portland Timbers) - $1 million
NHL
Mike Sullivan (Pittsburgh) - $5.5 million
Is Roberts worth that much?
Roberts is one of the best managers in MLB. His .627 regular season winning percentage as with the Dodgers (he also had one game as San Diego Padres manager) is the best among active managers. Including the playoffs, Roberts' winning percentage is .618, which is sixth best all-time among qualified managers. In fact, there isn't a single manager who has coached since 1950 with a better winning percentage.
Shockingly though, Roberts' incredible knack for winning games has earned him only one Manager of the Year Award. Roberts earned the hardware in 2016 after leading the Dodgers to a 91-71 record in his first year on the job.

Twins shortstop Carlos Correa sprains ankle when baserunner slides into him at 2nd

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota Twins shortstop Carlos Correa had to be helped off the field after injuring his right ankle when Pittsburgh's Tommy Pham slid into him at second base. Pham was trying to get to second on his liner off the wall in right field in the seventh inning of the Twins' 2-1 victory Friday night. Right fielder DaShawn Keirsey Jr.'s throw beat Pham, whose batting helmet made contact with Correa's lower leg. Correa rolled over and stayed on the ground before leaving the game. Brooks Lee moved from second base to shortstop to replace Correa. The team said Correa had a mild ankle sprain. The 30-year-old Correa is already in his 11th big league season and has been a mainstay at shortstop for the Twins since signing as a free agent in 2022. He missed about half of last season with a concussion and a plantar fascia injury, the latter of which kept him from playing in the All-Star Game after he was chosen for the third time. ___ AP MLB:

Larnach hits two-run HR, Ryan outpitches Skenes as Twins beat Pirates 2-1

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Trevor Larnach hit a two-run homer, Joe Ryan outpitched Paul Skenes. and the Minnesota Twins beat Pittsburgh 2-1 on Friday night to hand the Pirates their seventh straight loss. Ryan (9-4) allowed one run and five hits with two walks and five strikeouts in five innings. He threw 54 of his 86 pitches for strikes and has surrendered two runs or fewer in 14 of 18 starts this season. The Twins used five relievers to close it out with Jhoan Duran pitching the ninth for his 15th save in 17 opportunities. Skenes (4-8) allowed two runs and five hits with six strikeouts in five innings. He fanned Matt Wallner looking to end the fourth for his 300th career strikeout. He struck out the side in order in the first on 12 pitches. Skenes threw 53 of 78 pitches for strikes and is winless in his last eight starts dating to May 28 despite allowing two runs or fewer in 17 of 20 outings. Both pitchers had their starts moved up so they would be available to pitch in Tuesday's All-Star Game in Atlanta. Pittsburgh took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth when Spencer Horwitz singled and scored on a two-out double by Isiah Kiner-Falefa. Byron Buxton beat out a grounder to third leading off the bottom of the inning after Skenes was perfect through three. Larnach hit his 13th homer one out later to put the Twins up 2-1. Hortwitz singled with one out in the ninth and pinch runner Jac Suwinski stole his fifth base to get in scoring position. Duran struck out both Adam Frazier and Kiner-Falefa swinging to end it. Key moment Twins shortstop Carlos Correa was helped off the field in the seventh after a collision at second base with the Pirates' Tommie Pham. Key stat Skenes is the 17th pitcher in history — and the first Pirate — to reach 300 strikeouts in his first 43 starts. Up next The Twins haven't announced a Saturday starter opposite Pirates RHP Mike Burrows (1-2, 3.63 ERA). ___ AP MLB:

Shohei Ohtani crushes 32nd home run into San Francisco's McCovey Cove

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Dodgers slugger Shohei Ohtani splashed his 32nd home run of the season into San Francisco's McCovey Cove beyond the right-field wall Friday night. It marked the 65th home run into the water by an opponent in Oracle Park's 25-year history and 171st in all — and 35 of those belong to home run king Barry Bonds. Ohtani connected with one out in the third inning for a two-run drive after Hyeseong Kim's leadoff single marked the first hit of the night for Los Angeles against Giants starter Logan Webb. Set to make his fifth start on the mound pitching Saturday, Ohtani crushed a 91.1 mph cutter on Webb's first offering of the at-bat and the ball traveled 410 feet. A kayaker immediately jumped into the water to retrieve the special souvenir ball. The blast put the Dodgers up 2-1. ___ AP MLB:
