Al Fayed estate faces legal action from alleged victims
The BBC understands this is the first time the Al Fayed estate has been notified of claims of this kind since allegations of abuse were broadcast in a BBC documentary last year.
Three of the women worked for the late billionaire and former owner of Harrods as nannies and two as private air stewards between 1995 and 2012. They were between the ages of 18 and 30 when they say the abuse occurred.
The Fladgate law firm, which represents the estate, has been contacted for comment.
Leigh Day, the law firm representing the alleged victims, say the women were subjected to "serious sexual abuse, harassment and mistreatment".
Some allege they were threatened when they tried to raise concerns or report the abuse.
Previous claims have been brought against Harrods, the department store owned by Al Fayed until 2010.
Richard Meeran, one of the partners working on the women's case, told the BBC: "It is important that his estate is also made legally accountable for the widespread abuse he perpetrated against those who may never have had dealings with the famous store."
The women are pursuing compensation under a personal injury claim. The letters of claim, which have been sent to the representatives of Al Fayed's estate on the women's behalf, signify the first formal step in the civil legal process prior to the start of court proceedings.
Since the documentary Al Fayed: Predator at Harrods and podcast uncovered widespread allegations of abuse from former Harrods employees, the BBC has heard from close to 80 women who shared their own experiences.
The earliest account of abuse heard by the BBC stretched as far back as 1977 and a number of women described being recruited by Al Fayed under false pretences before being sexually exploited by him.
The Metropolitan Police have said more than 100 alleged victims have contacted them to say they were sexually abused by Al Fayed.
They are currently reviewing a total of 21 allegations made before he died in 2023.
A number of allegations were made against the businessman while he was still alive, but Al Fayed was never charged over rape and sexual assault allegations.
In November, the Met announced an investigation into how it handled allegations relating to Al Fayed.
Many of the women who have spoken to the BBC about their experiences have raised significant questions regarding how the predatory abuse they say they suffered was able to continue across numerous decades.
The five women, being represented by Leigh Day, are also calling for an independent inquiry into the matter.

A spokesperson for Leigh Day added: "The letters are sent under the pre-action protocol for personal injury claims and mark the first formal step in the legal process prior to the commencement of court proceedings."
In January, claims of abuse against Al Fayed and his brother Salah were heard in a UK court for the first time, in a civil case being brought against Harrods.
Their only surviving brother, Ali Fayed, has also been accused of sexual assault by former employees of the department store. A spokesperson for Mr Fayed, who lives in the US, said previously that he unequivocally denied any and all the allegations of wrongdoing, adding that "the incidents simply never took place".
Harrods' new owners have previously said they are "appalled" by the allegations of sexual abuse and have been investigating since 2023 whether any current members of staff were involved.
In November, the Met said it was investigating at least five people it believes may have assisted or enabled Al Fayed's alleged sexual offences.

Lamine Yamal Investigated Over Party Performers With Dwarfism
It's safe to say that Lamine Yamal, the 18-year-old Spanish soccer star, is living a life far different than your average teen. For context, Lamine is currently regarded as one of the best soccer players in the world and plays for Barcelona, one of the sport's top clubs. Talented teenagers aren't unusual in professional soccer; however, Lamine has broken numerous records, like being the youngest ever player to feature at a UEFA European Championship, and the youngest ever goalscorer in a European Championship, both when he was just 16 years old. Lamine is reported to be worth around $8 million, and so, it'll come as no surprise to hear that he went all out for his 18th birthday party last Sunday. However, the Barcelona star is set to be the subject of a government investigation following reports that he hired people with dwarfism to attend the party as entertainers. According to the BBC, the birthday party took place at a rented property in a small town just north-west of Barcelona, with a ton of influencers, YouTubers, and several of Lamine's Barcelona teammates in attendance. It's been reported that guests were banned from filming on their phones at the event; however, numerous videos have since surfaced, including one, published by the Daily Mail, which appears to show a group of men with dwarfism arriving at the venue with luggage. Lamine shared some pictures from the event with his 36.3 million Instagram followers, showing him dressed in a white suit with plenty of diamond jewelry, and what appears to be a diamond-encrusted cane. The video footage has been making the rounds on social media, and now, Spain's Ministry for Social Rights has requested that the country's prosecutor's office launch an investigation into Lamine to determine if his party breached disability laws, which prohibit the mocking or denigrating of people with disabilities. BBC Sport reported that the Association of People with Achondroplasia and other Skeletal Dysplasias in Spain (ADEE) has filed a legal complaint against the soccer player and 'publicly denounces the hiring of people with dwarfism as part of the entertainment,' saying that it 'perpetuates stereotypes, fuels discrimination, and undermines the image and rights' of people with disabilities. Neither Lamine nor FC Barcelona has spoken out about the controversy. However, a Spanish radio station called RAC1 broadcast an interview with a person claiming to be one of the 'artists with dwarfism who was hired' to attend the party. The individual, who chose to remain anonymous, defended Lamine's alleged actions, saying: 'No one disrespected us… I don't understand why there's so much hype. We're normal people, who do what we want, in an absolutely legal way.' Well, this is certainly not a good look. We'll keep you posted with any updates.

‘Harry Potter' star Emma Watson banned from driving for 6 months after speeding offense
Harry Potter actress Emma Watson has been banned from driving for six months after she was caught speeding in her Audi S3, according to British news outlets. The 35-year-old star, who played Hermione Granger in the film franchise, drove 38 mph in a 30 mph zone in Oxford, England, on July 31 last year, BBC reported. The offense was caught on a speed camera on a restricted road in the city. Watson was charged via mail and pleaded guilty on March 3 to the offense. On Wednesday, the actress was sentenced for the violation at a lower court in Wycombe. She did not attend the 5-minute hearing. In addition to the six-month driving ban, the actress will also have to pay £1,044 in fines (roughly $1,400 U.S. dollars), which she has to pay within 28 days. This is Watson's fourth driving offense in less than two years, according to the Daily Mail. She received three points on her license for this July 2024 speeding offense, in addition to nine points from driving offenses in January 2024 and October and November of 2023. Watson was driving her Audi S3 at the time of the speeding incident, which was towed away by police last year after it was illegally parked when she met up with her mom for lunch at a pub across the street, the Mirror reported. The actress has been studying for a doctorate at Oxford University. Coincidentally, in a separate hearing at the same court on July 16, another Harry Potter star was also handed the same sentence for speeding. Zoë Wanamaker, who played Madam Hooch in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, was also banned from driving for six months and fined £1,044 for driving 46 mph in a 40 mph zone in August 2024 in Berkshire, England, according to the Mirror. Like Watson, the 76-year-old also had nine points on her license before the speeding offense. Wanamaker did not attend the sentencing.
