Micah McCoy making a name for himself in Washington
But Micah McCoy isn't playing the family position of shortstop.
'I played shortstop at 8U, then shifted to thirdbase because I got a little bigger. I like third. It's more about reaction. I like to show off the arm sometimes,' McCoy said with a smile.
He's showed off his arm quite a bit this season, helping the Panthers win the Mid-Illini Conference title. The Panthers will host Geneseo in a class 3A regional championship game Saturday morning.
McCoy comes from a family of that loves to play bat-and-ball sports.
'Mason played shortstop, (Micah) plays third. They both have good arms,' said Washington baseball coach Kyle wisher. 'I remember watching Micah growing up when Mason was playing summer ball. He's put in a lot of hard work over the past three years. It's paid off this year.'
McCoy's older sister Madi was a star softball shortstop at Washington, leading her 2015 team to a state title. She was an All-American at Illinois Central College and then went on to Bowling Green.
And McCoy's older brother Mason is now in the big leagues with the San Diego Padres. Micah said he talks with his older brother usually about four or five times a week.
'Sometimes I go into the dugout after I strikeout and I send him the video. I ask, 'what am I doing wrong?' I get frustrated,' McCoy said. 'When I go hit, I can get a bunch of feedback. He helps me out a lot.'
Micah will follow in his Mason's footsteps by playing at ICC next year. Then he hopes to play at a Division I school, like his brother did.
Mason went to the University of Iowa for his final two years of college baseball before being selected in the sixth round of the 2017 draft by the Baltimore Orioles.
Like his brother, Micah would love to eventually play pro baseball. He knows the comparisons to his oldest sibling are inevitable, but he's just trying to make a name for himself.
With the help of his brother.
'I've talked to my brother about it. He helps me as much as he can,' McCoy said. 'He doesn't want to use too much leverage. He wants me to create my own path.'

Angel Reese Play Prompts ‘Strong' Message From the WNBA
Angel Reese Play Prompts 'Strong' Message From the WNBA originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Sky faced the Washington Mystics in a rare Tuesday morning affair with tip-off at 11:30 a.m. ET. After losing 80-75 on Sunday to the Minnesota Lynx, Angel Reese's squad looked to get back on track. Advertisement Midway through the second quarter, Reese had the ball at the top of the key guarded by Mystics rookie Kiki Iriafen. The former LSU Tiger drove to the cup on her and, after taking the contact from Iriafen, finished a tough lay-up on her off hand. The play drew a slight cheer from the away crowd, and quickly after, the WNBA posted the highlight with a "strong" message. "STRONG TAKE FOR ANGEL REESE," the WNBA captioned the post. Reese has been on fire lately, entering the game with five consecutive double-doubles, including four with at least 15 points and 15 rebounds. The 2024 No. 7 overall pick needed just one half to keep the streak alive. She went into halftime as the Mystics led 40-35, having played 18 minutes, shooting 3-of-5 with 10 points, 10 rebounds and one assist. Advertisement Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese (5).Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images Reese's play so far this season hasn't gone unnoticed. On July 1, she was named the Eastern Conference Player of the Week after averaging 19.7 points, 17.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game from June 23-29. The 6-foot-3 forward was also named a WNBA All-Star on Sunday. She's set to make her second appearance in as many seasons, with the game scheduled for July 19 in Indianapolis, home of the Indiana Fever. NTRA Announces Support For FAIR BET Act
NTRA Announces Support For FAIR BET Act originally appeared on Paulick Report. The National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) announced its support for the bipartisan Fair Accounting for Income Realized from Betting Earnings Taxation (FAIR BET) Act on July 8. The FAIR BET Act, introduced by Representative Dina Titus (D-NV), seeks to restore the 100% deduction for gambling losses. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, just recently signed into law, amended the deduction so that gamblers could only deduct 90% of their losses, instead of 100%. The legislation is co-sponsored by Reps. Troy Nehls (R-TX), Ro Khanna (D-CA), Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ), Steven Horsford (D-NV), and Mark Amodei (R-NV), as of Tuesday, July 8. 'The NTRA commends Congresswoman Titus for introducing the FAIR BET Act, which will restore the 100% tax deduction for gaming losses,' said NTRA President and CEO Tom Rooney.'There is no Thoroughbred racing without horseplayers. The changes to the tax deduction are detrimental to them and must be fixed. We're glad that swift bipartisan action is being taken. Along with Congresswoman Titus, the NTRA will continue to work alongside the Trump administration and leaders in the House and Senate to restore the tax deduction.'The Congresswoman has led the charge on rectifying this change to the tax code, which is set to take effect next year. 'My FAIR BET Act would rightfully restore the full deduction for losses so gamblers don't pay taxes on money they haven't won,' Congresswoman Titus said. 'This common-sense legislation will bring fairness back to gaming taxation, making sure that gamblers can fully deduct losses when they report their winnings. It gives everyone –from recreational gamblers to high-stakes gamblers -- a fair shake. We should be encouraging players to properly report their winnings and wager using legal operators. The Senate change will only push people to not report their winnings and to use unregulated platforms.''While I proudly voted for the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which prevents the largest tax hike in American history, the Senate's version contained a provision that I strongly disagree with,' said Congressman Nehls. 'Prior to the passage of the OBBBA, the tax code contained a 100% deduction for gambling losses and expenses up to the amount of the individual's winnings. This deduction was not changed in the House-passed version of the bill. The Senate, unfortunately, included a provision in their version of the legislation that reduced the allowable deduction to 90%, creating an overly punitive tax on gambling. This provision is unfair, which is exactly why I am a cosponsor of Rep. Dina Titus' FAIR BET Act.'Rep. Titus's bill can be found here. Kelly Olynyk on the move again, this time traded to San Antonio, AP source says
Canadian Kelly Olynyk is getting traded for the third time in five months, this time going from Washington to San Antonio for two players and a second-round pick, a person with knowledge of the agreement said Tuesday night. The Wizards will receive Malaki Branham and Blake Wesley, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because the trade was still pending the customary NBA approval. Olynyk was traded by Toronto to New Orleans in February as part of the deal that sent Brandon Ingram to the Raptors, then was moved by the Pelicans to the Wizards last month in the deal that sent Jordan Poole to New Orleans and CJ McCollum to Washington. He now moves on to the Spurs, where he'll add more front line depth to a team built around Victor Wembanyama. San Antonio also added big man Luke Kornet this summer and swung a deal last season for point guard De'Aaron Fox. Washington, which creates a $13 million trade exception with the deal and positions itself to add more salary during the season, gets two more young players and another pick — all the latest signs that the team is in asset-collection mode before next summer, when it could have $100 million in salary cap space. Olynyk has averaged 10.2 points and 5.2 rebounds during his career. He's going into his 13th season, having already played in Boston, Miami, Utah, Toronto, Detroit, New Orleans and Houston. —- AP NBA:
