'Akshaye Khanna fired me!,' Vidya Balan recalls an awkward first meeting after rejecting a film opposite him; went to John Abraham for help

Bollywood star
Vidya Balan
recently revisited an amusing yet awkward memory from her early days in the film industry. Speaking at the Bollywood Hungama Style Icons Summit, the powerhouse performer candidly revealed how she once turned down a film opposite Akshaye Khanna—and didn't have the courage to tell him herself!
The 'Kahaani' actress shared that she didn't connect with the script and decided to back out of the project.
But instead of personally informing Akshaye, she asked her manager to pass on the message to the director. The twist? She ended up running into Akshaye soon after on the sets of Salaam-e-Ishq in 2007.
'There was a film offered to me opposite
Akshaye Khanna
, and for some reason, I didn't connect with the script,' Vidya recalled. 'But I didn't pick up the phone and tell him that. I asked my manager to convey it to the director.'
Little did she know, Akshaye hadn't forgotten.
'He fired me,' Vidya laughed. 'He was like, 'Why didn't you tell me you didn't want to do the film?' I went up to John [Abraham] and said, 'Can you please save me?' I was so new back then. I didn't want any confrontation.'
Though the moment was tense at first, Vidya soon realized Akshaye was just messing with her. 'Of course, he was only pulling my leg,' she said with a smile. The experience, however, left a lasting impression.
She added that over time, and especially after marrying producer
Siddharth Roy Kapur
, she's grown to respect the enormous effort that goes into crafting a film. 'Nobody likes to hear 'no,' and I understand that now more than ever. I'm not a rude person—I say it like it is, but I value the work that goes into creating a script,' she shared sincerely.
On the work front, Vidya was last seen lighting up the screen in
Anees Bazmee
's horror-comedy Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, alongside Kartik Aaryan, Madhuri Dixit, and Triptii Dimri. The film hit theatres on November 1, 2024, and brought her iconic charm back to the big screen.

Bengaluru auto driver's honest take on Hindi-Kannada row goes viral: ‘Everything is first class'

A viral video featuring a candid conversation between a Bengaluru auto-rickshaw driver and a woman passenger has offered a refreshing perspective on the city's much-discussed language tensions. A viral video showed a Bengaluru auto driver's calm take on language issues.(Instagram/khyatishree2) Shared on Instagram by user Khyati Shree, the clip captures a light-hearted exchange where she tries to learn basic Kannada phrases from the driver. When asked about the recent spats between Hindi and Kannada speakers, the driver responds with striking simplicity: 'Yeh thoda aadmi log daru wagera peke rehta hai, aisa aisa karke jhagda hota hai. Warna koi problem nahi hai, acche se rehte hai sab… Bengaluru ke andar sab first class hai.' (Some men get drunk and do mischief, otherwise there are no problems. 'As long as you are a well-behaved person, no-one cares if you are a Hindi-speaking person,' she adds, noting that English also helps bridge communication gaps. Jackie Shroff Says It's An ‘Absolute Necessity' To Insure Stuntmen: ‘Even If You Plan…'

Published By : IANS Last Updated: Safety concerns for stuntmen resurfaced after the death of veteran stuntman Mohan Raj during Vettuvam shoot. Jackie Shroff reiterated the need to insure stuntmen. Actor Jackie Shroff was seen performing some high-octane action sequences in his latest web series, 'Hunter Season 2," alongside Suniel Shetty. During an exclusive interaction with IANS, Jackie was asked if stuntmen should be insured; the 'Hero' actor agreed, saying that it is an absolute necessity. Speaking to IANS, he said, 'It must be ensured that the stunts are being executed properly, as it cannot be determined when a mishap might take place." 'Even if you plan the best, the stunts must be well-rehearsed. Along with that, one can only depend on the calculations made before a stunt, and the rest is up to God," Jackie added. Suniel also revealed that he is always conscious while performing an action sequence. 'I am not concerned for my own safety, but for the safety of everyone involved in the scene," he shared. The concern for the safety of stuntmen has become a topic of discussion in the industry after a Tamil film stunt trainer, Mohanraj, recently passed away during the shoot of director Pa Ranjith's 'Vettuvam". If the reports are to be believed, an unfortunate accident took place when the team was filming a car overturning scene, featuring actor Arya. Coming back to 'Hunter 2", Jackie is seen as the antagonist, 'The Salesman' in the second season of the action-packed drama. Speaking about his character, Jackie added, 'Jumping into Hunter 2 – Tootega Nahi Todega was a wild ride. The world had its own vibe, and then this Salesman walks in and turns it all upside down. Playing him was like holding fire in your hands – calm, yet deadly. The trailer's out, Bhidus! Time to dive in and enjoy the ride!" Made under the direction of Prince Dhiman, in collaboration with Alok Batra, the action entertainer also features Anusha Dandekar and Barkha Bisht in significant roles, along with others. 'Hunter Season 2" premiered on Amazon MX Player on 24th July. Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive.
