Soccer-Italy's Serie A matches postponed after death of Pope Francis

The Star21-04-2025
(Reuters) -Italy's top-flight soccer league Serie A has postponed all of Monday's fixtures following the death of Pope Francis.
Pope Francis, the first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church and a lifelong soccer fan has died, the Vatican said in a video statement on Monday. He was 88, and had survived a serious bout of double pneumonia.
"Following the passing of His Holiness, Lega Nazionale Professionisti Serie A can confirm that today's league games in Serie A and Primavera 1 have been postponed," the league said in a statement.
"The date of the rearranged fixtures will be announced in due course."

Tour de France shortens stage 19 after cattle disease outbreak forces route change

FRIDAY'S Stage 19 of the Tour de France has been shortened after an outbreak of contagious nodular dermatitis in cattle near the Col des Saisies forced authorities to cull livestock and restrict access to the area, race organisers said on Thursday. The 129.9-km stage from Albertville to La Plagne was due to include the ascent of the Col des Saisies, but the climb has now been scrapped to avoid the affected zone, ASO said in a statement. 'In light of the distress experienced by the affected farmers and in order to preserve the smooth running of the race, it has been decided, in agreement with the relevant authorities, to modify the route,' ASO said. The ceremonial start will take place as planned in Albertville, followed by a 7-km neutralised section before the official start an hour later than planned. Riders will rejoin the original course shortly before Beaufort, at the 52.4-km mark of the initial route. As a result, the stage will now be reduced to 95 km. The shortened stage still finishes in La Plagne and comes just two days before the Tour concludes in Paris on Sunday - REUTERS

Scarred Norris has a nose for success

FORMULA ONE title contender Lando Norris is scarred by success. He also has a nose for it. The McLaren driver now sports two scars on his nose, each a memento of a career milestone, and the Briton is not altogether unhappy about it. The first cut was acquired in Amsterdam last year on a broken glass while on a party weekend, days before he took his breakthrough maiden career F1 victory in Miami. The second injury came at Silverstone this month while he was celebrating a first home win in front of fans at the British Grand Prix and a mesh fence partially collapsed and a photographer fell on him. 'It's healing nicely now,' Norris, laughing, told reporters when asked at the Belgian Grand Prix about the latest facial injury. 'I got a more professional repair on this one. 'But both are great memories of mine. So if I ever want to look in the mirror and think of something great, I just look at my nose. It was a little shame because at that moment I wanted to stand on the pit straight and all the fans were there, so I missed out a little bit on a nice moment. My nose is unlucky at the moment.' Norris is second in the championship at the midpoint, eight points adrift of Australian teammate Oscar Piastri. He has won four times this season, including the showcase Monaco Grand Prix - REUTERS
