'Elegant' UK seaside town gets direct train to London after it was axed five yea
Among many, many other crimes, the pandemic put an end to a direct rail link connecting Eastbourne to London. But now, after five years of campaigning, the train is back, with services resuming from December. It's good news for commuters who live in the East Sussex seaside town, who will be able to get to the capital in just 1 hour and 37 minutes. The service will run from Monday to Thursday, departing from Eastbourne at 06:48, and arriving at London Bridge for 08:25. The train will also make a stop in Lewes. Travellers previously complained that the train 'vanished' back in 2020, while others said it was 'quicker from Paris' to get to London, than it is from the south coast town. Liberal Democrat MP Josh Babarinde, who had been spearheading the campaign, called the train's comeback a 'huge victory'. The direct link will also make it easier for Londoners who fancy a day by the seaside. While Eastbourne gets overlooked for the likes of Brighton or Bournemouth, it's got a lot to offer, and has even been named as one of the best seaside towns in England, according to Conde Nast Traveller. TripAdvisor reviews have dubbed the town 'elegant' with its 'Victorian hotels, 19th-century pier, and 'wide promenade fronting a stretch of quintessentially British shingle beaches.' You won't miss the rainbow mural that adorns the outside of the Towner Eastbourne. The free-to-open art gallery opened in 2009, and houses an impressive contemporary art collection. In 2023, it even hosted the Turner Prize, featuring works from Rory Pilgrim, Barbara Walker and winner, Jesse Darling. For more art, the nearby Volt features work of more under-the-radar local artists. There's also lots of traditional seaside fun to be had. Head to the Pier and past the famous bandstand, which has an impressive, if not somewhat exhausting, schedule of events, which in the last few weeks of July alone includes tribute acts for Pink, UB40, Kylie Minogue and Michael Jackson. There's also an arcade for those willing to gamble all of their 2ps, and of course, a fish and chip shop. More Trending While walking around the town, make sure you head to Camilla's Bookshop, a treasure trove which has been selling second hand and antique books since Camilla set it up in 1985. The only complaint that reviewers on TripAdvisor have is there are simply 'too many' books, which are 'stacked floor to ceiling.' Finally, venture about 15 minutes outside of town and you'll get to the Seven Sisters, the glorious chalk cliffs. Walking up and down them can be a little tricky – especially if it's been raining – but on a clear day, the views are breathtaking. There's also the famous Beachy Head, known for mysterious stories, from its role in smuggling, to supposed hauntings. And after all the walking, rest your legs and grab a pint at the nearby The Beachy Head pub, with amazing views out to sea. Do you have a story to share? The stunning part of Escape To The Chateau stars Dick and Angel Strawbridge's sprawling estate we never saw on Channel 4 show
A stunning part of Escape To The Chateau stars Dick and Angel Strawbridge 's sprawling estate we never saw on the Channel 4 show has been revealed. The reality show, which ran from 2016 to 2022, followed the British couple as they bought and renovated a 19th-century French chateau. The pair juggled doing up the manor in north-west France with raising two young children and running a wedding and event planning business. After a whopping nine series of the programme, the Strawbridges started a weekly podcast in 2023 called Dick & Angel's providing chateau life updates. But despite the wealth of content out there about their home life, there is one aspect of Chateau de la Motte-Husson we have never been privy to. A recent snap the family posted to social media shows off their gorgeous, tucked-away vegetable garden, surrounded by lush trees and climbing plants. In the Instagram post, Dick, 65, was seen walking alongside the abundant beds with his children Arthur, 13, and Dorothy, 11. The youngsters were helping their father pick the homegrown produce, with stunning views of the turreted property behind them. The secluded part of the chateau's sprawling 12-acre grounds is located close to the main house, presumably to provide easy access to the kitchen garden. But it is seemingly surrounded by tall brick walls and shaded by lofty trees, perhaps explaining why viewers have not seen so much of this part of the property before. It is a beautiful outdoor space, with a charming arched entryway, neat and tidy planters and walkways lined by gorgeous flowers and shrubbery. As well as the walled garden, the family's land boasts an enormous barn, lots of outdoor seating and a huge private lake. It looks just as good in winter as in summer, with another postcard-perfect snap shared by the family, in November last year, showing it covered in glittering frost. But despite the looks of their idyllic lifestyle abroad, all has not been plain sailing at the chateau in recent times. As well as the walled garden, the family's land boasts an enormous barn, lots of outdoor seating and a huge private lake In March, Channel 4 revealed there would be an Escape To The Chateau spin-off - and the pair are not involved in any capacity. Dick and Angel took to Instagram shortly after the news broke to share a snap of one of their house designs - opting not to address the new show at all. They wrote: 'A very good morning to you! We're busy…lots of changes and lots of activity at the Chateau! Any guesses? 'To keep up to date with what's happening in our world, sign up to our newsletter! Link in bio! Have a terrific Tuesday! Xxx.' But while they remained silent on the programme, some rushed to the comments section to urge Dick and Angel to create another series of their original show. One wrote: 'We definitely need a new series! Please.' Another added: 'We're gunna need more episodes.' 'We need to have a new series to find out!,' a third pointed out. Dick and Angel took to Instagram shortly after the news broke to share a snap (pictured) of one of their house designs - opting not to address the new show at all A fourth questioned: 'New series? Please make a new series.' Escape To The Chateau was dramatically axed in 2022 shortly after bullying accusations were made in 2021. But earlier this year, Channel 4 revealed it was joining forces with Spark Media North to work on a daytime show called Chateau DIY: Win The Dream. The programme will give one of 12 pairs the chance to win their own chateau in France. It follows on from Chateau DIY, which is associated with Escape to the Château. Chateau DIY, which hit our screens in 2018, follows the lives of families who are renovating their properties in France. There have been eight seasons, with the last on our screens in December 2024.

UK drivers warned they face £340 fine for doing 7mph over speed limit
The UK is no longer part of the EU - however, British motorists on holiday in Europe could face hefty fines for breaking one important rule when driving within the bloc British drivers on continental breaks could face hefty fines for violating a single critical rule. carVertical has warned that Denmark leads Europe with the harshest speeding penalties across the continent. The motoring experts revealed that motorists caught travelling just 7mph to 9mph over the speed limit could be slapped with a €402 penalty (around £340). Matas Buzelis, automotive specialist at carVertical, said: "People heading off on holiday often forget that speed limits vary country to country – and so do the consequences. You might only be doing a few miles per hour over the limit, but in places like Denmark or Switzerland, that can cost more than your entire weekend away." He added: "Fines don't just disappear either. If you're in a rental car, they'll chase you down - and add admin fees on top. If you're driving your own vehicle, some countries are now sharing data and will follow up once you're back in the UK. "And with roadside cameras, average speed zones and urban traps everywhere. It's very easy to get caught without even realising you're done anything wrong." The warning comes as new research from Travel Republic revealed that Britons are splashing out a staggering £794 million each year on avoidable last-minute costs, with forgotten sun cream and emergency passport applications topping the list, reports Yorkshire Live. According to research by Travel Republic, over a third of Brits admit to forgetting to purchase sun cream before jetting off - a mistake that's proving rather expensive. A standard bottle of SPF 30 at airport duty-free now averages around £35, nearly £30 more than buying it on the high street. This seemingly small oversight is costing UK holidaymakers an eye-watering £683 million each year. However, with the 100ml rule now eased at certain airports and more expected to follow suit, Brits can finally pack larger bottles of essential toiletries, including sun cream, in their cabin bags, potentially saving hundreds of pounds annually.
