The Spanish startup Lain Tech crowned winner of South Summit Madrid 2025

The Hindu09-06-2025
After three days marked by entrepreneurship and innovation, South Summit Madrid 2025, co-organised by IE University, concluded its fourteenth edition with the announcement of the winners of the Startup Competition. Lain Tech, a startup hailing from Pozuelo de Alarcón (Madrid), is revolutionising mining with a sustainable electrochemical process to recover complex metals. The method reduces the carbon footprint by 94% and uses 100% electric energy.
At the closing ceremony of the 14th edition of South Summit Madrid 2025, four other startups were also recognised: U.S.-based Bankuish, from Miami, was named 'Most Disruptive'; Chilean Hera Materials was awarded 'Most Sustainable'; and Catalan startups NeuralTrust and Remuner received the titles of 'Most Scalable', and the startup with the 'Best Team,' respectively.
During the South Summit 2025 closing event, the award for the South Summit Kids Competition — organised in collaboration with Genyus School — was also presented to Alcaste - Las Fuentes School from Logroño (La Rioja) for its project Smart Cart, an intelligent shopping cart that organises purchases and provides useful product information.
Under the theme 'In Motion', the event, co-organised by IE University, brought together more than 600 speakers, 150 investors, and 19 unicorns at La Nave in Madrid from June 4 to 6. The event was backed by the Secretary of State for Digitalisation and Artificial Intelligence, the Community of Madrid, and the Madrid City Council, along with sponsors such as Mutua Madrileña, Google for Startups, BBVA Spark, Wayra – Telefónica Innovation, and BStartup from Banco Sabadell.
The president and founder of South Summit, María Benjumea, wanted to praise all the participating startups on the last day of the meeting with these words: 'The 100 finalists are champions. We have seen impressive projects these days, you are in charge of revolutionizing the world. You are not the future, you are the now'.
Another of the highlights of the closing day was the session 'From Deep Tech Innovation to Scale Up', which was attended by Teresa Riesgo, Secretary General of Innovation of the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities; Manuel Escolano, Director of Open Innovation at Ferrovial; Esperanza Torralva, Director of Innovation at Moeves, and Natalia Álvarez, Head of Innovation at Repsol. During the meeting, public and private initiatives to promote technology transfer were presented, from funds such as Invest to open innovation projects or corporate investments in deep tech and sustainability.
All the participants in this session agreed that innovation only scales when there is real and sustained collaboration between administration, companies, and knowledge centres. They also wanted to underline the importance of aligning technological developments with industrial and social needs, and of committing to co-creation models that integrate all actors from early stages.
South Summit is the global platform that brings together all the actors in the innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem to promote the development of business opportunities among all of them. Its main event is South Summit Madrid, co-organized by IE University, which has seen more than 42,500 startups pass through its thirteen previous editions, while its Startup Competition, from which 9 unicorns have been born, has resulted in more than 1,000 finalist startups, with a survival rate of 90% and 17,000 million dollars in investment raised.

England forward Marcus Rashford joins Barcelona on loan from Manchester United

Marcus Rashford has been given the chance to revive his career at Barcelona with a season-long loan move from Manchester United announced Wednesday. The England forward, who was once considered among Europe's top talents, has seen his career stall in recent years after falling out of favor at United and ending last season on loan at Aston Villa. The 27-year-old Rashford will join a Barcelona attack that includes young star Lamine Yamal, Brazil international Raphinha and veteran striker Robert Lewandowski. 📞 "Yeah… It's official."Rashford follows in Lineker's footsteps. — FC Barcelona (@FCBarcelona) July 23, 2025 Rashford had arrived in Barcelona on Sunday to sign his contract. He had already met his teammates and reportedly trained with the group on Tuesday. Financial details were not immediately disclosed. Spanish media said the agreement with United would give Barcelona an option to buy Rashford for about 30 million euros ($35 million). Spanish champion Barcelona had looked set to sign Spain forward Nico Williams this offseason until he agreed a 10-year deal to stay at Athletic Bilbao earlier this month. That opened the door for Rashford to make the switch. Barcelona had the best attack in Spanish soccer and one of the most prolific across Europe last season, but had been trying to add another piece to the front line to go along with Yamal, Raphinha and Lewandowski. Done deal ✍️ — FC Barcelona (@FCBarcelona) July 23, 2025 The trio helped the club score 102 goals as it won the Spanish league title, 24 goals more than runner-up Real Madrid. The Catalan club also led the Champions League in goals with 43, five more than champion Paris Saint-Germain, before being eliminated by Inter Milan in the semifinals. Rashford had progressed through United's famed academy that produced greats like Ryan Giggs and David Beckham. He made 429 appearances, scored 138 goals and helped United win five major trophies, including two FA Cups and the Europa League. But he struggled to consistently live up to the hype that surrounded him when he burst onto the scene as a teenager in 2016 — only managing 20 goals or more in three seasons. In his last two seasons at United he scored a combined 15 goals and added another four in 17 games on loan at Villa. But Rashford's ability has rarely been called into question and he recently earned a recall to the England squad under new coach Thomas Tuchel, putting him in contention for next year's World Cup if the national team qualifies.

U.S. trade deals with Japan, Indonesia hold lessons, warnings for India: Experts

The announcements by U.S. President Donald Trump and the White House regarding trade deals with Japan and details of the deal with Indonesia on Tuesday (July 22, 2025) will have significant implications and lessons for a potential trade deal with India, according to officials and trade experts. Mr. Trump on Tuesday (July 22, 2025) announced that the U.S. had completed a 'massive deal' with Japan. Simultaneously, the White House also released the framework for the deal with Indonesia, which had been announced last week. According to Mr. Trump, Japan has agreed to invest $550 billion in the U.S. under the deal, which would create 'hundreds of thousands' of jobs in the U.S. Also, Japanese imports into the U.S. will face a 15% tariff, down from the proposed 25%. Also Read | India-U.S. trade deal: Deadlock over agri continues, but Trump surprise not ruled out Under the deal, Japan has also agreed to import a larger share of rice from the U.S. under its tariff-free quota. According to a World Trade Organisation (WTO) minimum access framework agreement signed in 1995, Japan imports about 7,70,000 metric tons of tariff-free rice every year. According to some reports, the U.S. accounted for 45% of the total in the last financial year. This share could now increase. According to Mr. Trump, Japan will open several sectors to U.S. imports, including cars, trucks, and agricultural products. The Hindu has previously reported how agriculture remains a major impediment in the ongoing negotiations for a trade deal between India and the U.S. 'India is of course monitoring all the deals that are being struck with the U.S., but it's also important to remember that these are deals so far in words and have not been officially signed yet,' according to a source. Also Read | U.S. not rushing trade deals ahead of August deadline, will talk with China: U.S. Treasury Secretary 'But it is significant that agriculture entered the U.S. deal with Japan,' he added. 'It is important to examine the ring-fencing of rice imports that Japan has ensured.' Following Mr. Trump's announcement, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba was quoted by Reuters as telling reporters that 'import volumes (of rice) will remain within the minimum access framework and we retain the discretion over how much and what type to import from each country'. The framework for the trade deal with Indonesia reveals that that country would remove tariffs on about 99% of items industrial, food and agricultural items imported from the U.S. In addition, the framework also includes several upcoming acquisitions by Indonesia of products from the U.S. Also Read | India needs to be careful, clever while negotiating trade pact with US: Raghuram Rajan These include aircraft worth $3.2 billion, agriculture products, including soybeans, soybeans meal, wheat and cotton worth $4.5 billion and energy products, including liquefied petroleum gas, crude oil and gasoline, worth $15 billion. The U.S. will impose a 19% tariff on Indonesia, down from the 32% he had said would be imposed from August 1. The U.S.–Indonesia trade deal forces Jakarta to give up key domestic regulations that have long protected its industries, food safety and digital space. 'The U.S.–Indonesia trade deal is a clear example of how aggressive U.S. pressure can force countries to slash tariffs, commit to large purchases, and give up control over their own regulations,' Ajay Srivastava, former Director General of Foreign Trade and founder of Global Trade Research Initiative said. 'India must be careful not to fall into the same trap.'
