Diego Velazquez prevails in Minstrel Stakes

Rhyl Journal21-07-2025
Aidan O'Brien's son of Frankel was winning for the fifth time in his 10-race career, but was tackling the shortest distance he has encountered since making a winning debut over the same course and distance as a two-year-old.
The 11-8 favourite for the Group Two event in the hands of Ryan Moore, he was well away and always in a handy position alongside Adrian Murray's Irish 1,000 Guineas runner-up California Dreamer.
Moore may have been low in the saddle inside the final quarter-mile but he had a willing ally and although the challengers were queuing up a furlong from home, it was only David Marnane's 25-1 shot East Hampton who emerged from the pack to lay down a stern challenge in the closing stages.
Diego Velazquez, however, was never headed and even though East Hampton was within a neck at the winning post, the class of the Ballydoyle colt was always keeping him on top.
O'Brien said: 'A mile is probably his trip. We were preparing him for Ascot and we had him in the stalls at Leopardstown, but he got upset and had to be withdrawn (from the Amethyst Stakes) and that upset his Ascot plan.
'I wasn't confident enough to tell Ryan to ride him as forward as he would have liked (in the Queen Anne Stakes) because he hadn't had a run. They only walked the first half of the race, so it was a non event really.
'We knew he would come forward a lot from then to today and he did well to win today over seven. He's a brave horse and Ryan gave him a good ride.
'He's a very well-made horse – powerful, strong, a great walker. Physically as a specimen he's a tank really.
'We'll go back up to a mile now for the Sussex or the Jacques le Marois, something like that.
'He'll have no problem getting back up to nine furlongs or a mile and a quarter at the end of the season.'

Former Cliftonville star swaps West Ham United for League of Ireland club: ‘I'm buzzing to be here'

The 19-year-old has joined the League of Ireland Premier Division champions on a permanent basis. 'I'm absolutely buzzing to be here,' said Moore who has agreed a multi-year deal. 'Shelbourne is a massive club and I'm delighted to get the deal done. I'm ready to get to work, hit the ground running, and show the fans what I'm all about.' The Republic of Ireland Under-21 international joined the Hammers from Cliftonville in 2023. Over two seasons, he made 56 appearances for the development side, scoring 10 goals as the Under-21s finished in second and fourth place in Premier League 2 in 2024 and 2025 respectively. Moore joins Shels ahead of their UEFA Champions League second qualifying round, second-leg tie against Qarabag. His performances for Cliftonville in 2022/23 saw the teenager named in the NIFL Premiership Team of the Year and win the NI Football Writers' Association Young Player of the Year award. Shels boss Joey O'Brien said: 'Sean's a top young player with huge potential. He came into the game at a young age with Cliftonville and earned a great education over in England with West Ham. 'Now he's ready to kick on with the next stage of his career, and we're delighted he's put his trust in us. 'He's an exciting player to watch, really positive in how he plays the game. He can play in multiple positions on both sides of the pitch, which gives us great flexibility.' Luke Byrne, Shelbourne FC Technical Director, added on the club's website: 'Sean is a really exciting talent with lots of potential and we are looking forward to working with him to develop that talent. 'He is a young Irish player who definitely fits the profile that we want to add to the squad. We're very happy he has chosen Shelbourne as the best place to continue his career.'

Ireland fightback to defeat Czechia in Portugal: ‘We made life difficult for ourselves'

Having trailed 3-1, an impressive third quarter display saw Ireland take control of the game, with Johnny McKee, Matthew Nelson and a Lee Cole brace giving Ireland a lead that they saw out to secure the win. Ireland dominated possession in the opening minutes, with Matthew Nelson's early effort deflected over the bar by the Czech defenders. McKee earned Ireland the first penalty corner of the match after Louis Rowe did well to release his Banbridge teammate on the break. Cole's effort from the corner was well saved. Czechia, however, drew first blood, breaking the deadlock just before the end of the first quarter, a deft touch in the circle from a crash ball beating Jaime Carr in the Irish net. Czechia added a second to their tally halfway through quarter 2, but Ireland pulled a goal back just before half-time thanks to some individual brilliance from Daragh Walsh. He cut inside from the right-hand side and beat two players before finding McKee on the penalty spot to strike into the back of the net. Czechia's pace on the break continued to cause Ireland problems in the second half, as they won a penalty corner after two minutes, which Ireland did well to defend initially. However, Czechia eventually found the net from the follow-up. Ireland responded immediately, McKee getting his second and a great pass from Matthew Nelson to fire in on his reverse from a tight angle. With the momentum now in their favour, Ireland launched another attack, McKee yet again getting involved with his effort at goal blocked on the line by a Czech body to win Ireland a penalty stroke, which Cole dispatched to draw Ireland level at 3-3. Sean Murray and Matthew Nelson combined to put Ireland ahead for the first time in the game, Murray weaving his way along the baseline and calmly flicking towards goal for Nelson to touch into the net. Ireland pressed immediately from the restart, with Cole eventually winning ball on the edge of the Czech circle and drawing a heavy foul to win a second penalty stroke, which he again dispatched to extend Ireland's lead to 5-3 and that was enough for victory. Speaking after the game, Ireland Head Coach Mark Tumilty said: 'We made that difficult for ourselves today. Any time they got into our circle they looked dangerous. We have enough experience in this competition to know how difficult it can be, but we need to manage those challenging patches better.' Discussing Ireland's comeback, Tumilty added: 'The positive was quarter three where we played better hockey, were more aggressive in the press, and scored some good goals.' Ireland will face Italy in their next game of Pool A on Tuesday, July 29 at 3.15pm.

Kilmarnock defender Corrie Ndaba looks destined to complete Lecce switch

Kilmarnock defender Corrie Ndaba looks set to seal a move to Serie A side Lecce. The 25-year-old joined Killie on a three-year deal last summer after a spell on loan from Ipswich in the 2023-24 campaign and made 38 appearances last term. Amid speculation that he was heading for Italy, Ndaba was not involved as the Ayrshire side sealed their place in the second round of the Premier Sports Cup with a 4-0 home win over East Fife. And on Saturday evening, Lecce posted on X a picture of the Irish defender holding a club scarf, accompanied by a short statement indicating that he was poised to sign for them. 'The footballer Corrie Ndaba arrived in Bressanone in the late afternoon, where he began undergoing medical examinations that will be completed on Monday,' it read. As Ndaba heads for the exit, Killie are welcoming the emergence of a new talent, Ben Brannan. The 18-year-old took his tally for the season to three when he scored a double from left-wing-back in the win over East Fife, adding to earlier strikes from summer signings Marcus Dackers and Djenairo Daniels. 'We speak about him kind of coming flat off that left-hand side onto his stronger right foot,' manager Stuart Kettlewell said in a club interview. 'He's been more accustomed, quite clearly, to playing on the right-hand side. 'But when you look at a young academy player and somebody that's coming in for his first games for this football club, I don't know that you can ask too much more. 'We think he can be a really promising player and a really promising talent for the football club. And what it does is it just continues to kind of pave the way that there's opportunities here for a lot of other young players.' Brannan went off injured in the closing stages but Kettlewell said: 'We think it's just a bit of spasm in his thigh. 'It was obviously uncomfortable at the time, but he was moving about far better when we went back into the dressing room, so fingers crossed he's fit and available for next week and moving into the first league game.'
