Trump attends FIFA Club World Cup final in New Jersey
Trump has framed major sporting events, including the 2026 World Cup and 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, as symbols of his 'Golden Age of America' vision. His relationship with FIFA president Gianni Infantino has also played a role, with the Club World Cup trophy displayed in the Oval Office since Infantino's March visit.
The president's interest in football appears personal as well. His son Barron is a fan, and Trump himself reportedly played the sport during his time at the New York Military Academy. Infantino noted, 'When you are a parent, you love what your children love, so I think that he loves it.'
Despite football's growing popularity in the US, it still trails behind American football, basketball, and baseball. Yet Trump's attendance aligns with his focus on global influence. He previously highlighted that the US secured the 2026 World Cup hosting rights during his first term.
The expanded Club World Cup has drawn 2.5 million spectators nationwide, exceeding expectations. Infantino praised Trump's support, joking that the president 'certainly loves the trophy,' which matches the Oval Office's gilded aesthetic.
However, Trump's football enthusiasm has not been without controversy. During a meeting with Juventus, he questioned whether women could compete in men's football, prompting a diplomatic response from the club. His immigration policies have also raised concerns about fan attendance for the 2026 World Cup, with Vice President JD Vance stating visitors must 'go home' after the tournament - AFP

PARIS: Zimbabwe qualified for the 2027 Rugby World Cup with a 30-28 victory over Namibia in the Africa Cup final on Saturday. This will be Zimbabwe's first appearance in the rugby showpiece since 1991. The door is still open for Namibia to book their ticket to what would be an eighth consecutive World Cup. They face the United Arab Emirates in a play-off ahead of final qualifiers in Dubai in November. The last time Zimbabwe made it to the finals, they lost their three matches against Ireland (55-11), Scotland (51-12) and Japan (52-8). Australia host the 2027 World Cup. - AFP

'Cheaper for Harimau Malaya to go to Singapore than Dushanbe?
KUALA LUMPUR: For years, Harimau Malaya lamented that no top teams want to play them because of their "low" standard. Now ironically, Malaysia withdrew from the Central Asian Football Association (CAFA) Nations Cup after accepting a first ever invitation. And now, there is speculation that Malaysia may play Singapore instead during the September Fifa window. Malaysia still want to play their neighbours from across the Causeway — again, again and again? Singapore as replacement for higher ranked teams like Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Iran, who are going to the 2026 World Cup? Football legend Datuk Jamal Nasir Ismail finds this purported U-turn from Central Asia to Southeast Asia baffling. "They don't want to play in a good tournament. What's the strategy? There must be something that has led to this," said Jamal. It was reported that the national team will instead hold a training camp in Kuala Lumpur from Sept 1–9, while a friendly with Singapore was being considered. Jamal said the national team could be trying to save costs as going to Singapore instead of Dushanbe (for the Nations Cup) is cheaper. "Is it because of financial constraints? When going there (Nations Cup), you have to pay this and that, flights are expensive, but here (Singapore) is not that expensive. "They should come out with a press conference to explain and not just keep quiet," he added. Jamal also found it hard to accept the reasons for Malaysia's withdrawal — travel logistics, transit fatigue and the unavailability of overseas-based players. "These are not good excuses, and if there are transits, then go earlier and you can recover. Not a plausible excuse. "Even when they talk about overseas-based players who aren't available, do they think that only players like Imanol Machuca, Facundo Garces and Rodrigo Holgado are good and the rest aren't? I think netizens will think the same way, too," said Jamal.

Soccer-Scugnizzo Cup sparks football passion in Naples prison walls
NAPLES, Italy (Reuters) -In the vibrant heart of Naples' historic centre, the thunderous sounds from five-a-side football matches resonate off the ancient stone walls of a former juvenile prison. Fuelled by Napoli winning the Italian Serie A title in two of the last three seasons, a passion for soccer is taking root across the city. More than 30 years had passed since the club's first two Scudetto crowns inspired by Argentina World Cup winner and Napoli icon Diego Maradona. The long-awaited success has reignited a deep passion for the sport and the fierce devotion Neapolitans are renowned for. Nowhere is this clearer than in the games in the former prison courtyard, abandoned for over two decades, which are drawing growing crowds and sponsorship. The Scugnizzo Cup, a grassroots tournament in its sixth year, is becoming one of the city's most popular sporting events. "It's a game this city loves deeply, almost viscerally, but one that is often tied solely to the passion for the city's professional club," volunteer Sergio Sciambra said. "At the same time Naples lacks sports facilities and parks, and it has become nearly impossible to play football in public squares taken over by cafes and tourism," The prison, known as Scugnizzo Liberato, which translates to liberated street boy in the Neapolitan dialect, has been transformed into a vibrant community space. "It's a tournament created for the people of the neighbourhoods, to build atmosphere and friendship," said organiser Giuseppe Pipino. "Naples is sometimes criticised for not being a good example, but the Scugnizzo Cup is for those kids who face more difficulties." The tournament brings neighbourhood and migrant teams together to play matches in a tight concrete courtyard. "The Scugnizzo Cup is the testament to a need felt by the city, to reclaim a sport that can no longer be just watched from the stands," volunteer Julian Foster said. "It shows us that you can still have fun without massive stadiums and football superstar, that there are other ways of being together, ways that have slowly been taken away or forgotten." During this year's final, the prison courtyard was up by with flares as Manchester City Napoli, named in playful tribute to their Premier League counterparts, crushed Inter Miami Quartieri Uniti 4-0 on Friday.
