Non-AC coaches in Indian Railways increase to 70 pc with focus on poor
Indian Railways have significantly increased the facilities for passengers demanding general class travel.
During the last financial year 2024-25 alone, 1,250 general coaches have been utilised in various long-distance trains.
Indian Railways continues to run a large number of trains with affordable fare structures, including Mail, Express and passenger trains, for the benefit of the general public including the poor and lower middle class.
Indian Railways has introduced non-AC Amrit Bharat services and Namo Bharat Rapid Rail services, providing high quality services to a larger section of the population, particularly lower income groups, the minister said.
Indian Railways has also provisioned for production of another 100 Amrit Bharat Trains, he added.
Vaishnaw highlighted that due to higher availability of general coaches, the number of passengers travelling in general/unreserved coaches has shown an increasing trend, going up from 553 crore in 2022-23 to 609 crore in 2023-24 and 651 crore in 2024-25.
The number of seats available for non-AC passengers has now gone up to 54 lakh which constitutes 78 per cent of the total while AC seats comprise the remaining 22 per cent.
To provide greater accommodation for the passengers using General and non-AC Sleeper Coaches, the extant policy regarding composition of Mail/Express trains provides for 12 General class & Sleeper class non- AC coaches and 8 AC-Coaches, in a train of 22 coaches, thereby providing greater accommodation for the passengers using General and non-AC Sleeper Coaches, Vaishnaw explained.
Further, to cater to the needs of passengers desirous of availing unreserved accommodation, Indian Railways operate unreserved non-AC passenger trains/MEMU/EMU etc. for affordable travel, which are in addition to the unreserved accommodation (coaches) available in Mail/Express services.
Development of Amrit Bharat Express trains, manufacturing of MEMU trains, and increasing the share of general coaches clearly shows that Indian Railways is catering effectively to the demand for travel in general class, the minister further stated.
Indian Railways has introduced fully non-AC Amrit Bharat trains, presently comprising 11 General Class coaches, 8 Sleeper Class coaches, 1 Pantry car and 2 Second class cum Luggage cum Guard Van & Disabled Friendly Compartment.
These trains have been designed and manufactured to cater to the needs of the general public by providing world-class modern and comfortable rail travel experience to passengers of the non-AC segment.

CM Sai flags off new Raipur-Jabalpur Express to enhance tourism & connectivity
Raipur: The new Raipur–Jabalpur Express was flagged off from Raipur railway station on Monday, enhancing connectivity between Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh. The express service offers a faster and more convenient route for travellers between Raipur, Gondia, and Jabalpur, with 15 coaches including one AC chair car, four chair cars, eight general coaches, one power car, and one SLR coach. Regular service for train number 11701 will depart from Raipur at 2:45 pm and arrive in Jabalpur at 10:45 pm. Train number 11702 will depart from Jabalpur at 6 am and reach Raipur at 1:50 pm. This new service will be helpful for business travellers, students, tourists, and daily commuters. It will also improve access to tourist destinations like Nandanvan Zoological Park, Maa Bamleshwari Temple, Kanha National Park, and Bhedaghat. Chhattisgarh Chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai and Assembly Speaker Dr Raman Singh flagged off the train from Raipur railway station. The new service, which will connect three states, was launched virtually by Union Ministers Ashwini Vaishnaw and Mansukh Mandaviya from Bhavnagar, Gujarat. At the virtual launch, the Rewa-Pune (Hadapsar) Express and Bhavnagar Terminus-Ayodhya Express were also inaugurated. CM Sai said the new train was a gift to the people of Chhattisgarh from PM Narendra Modi and Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. He thanked them on behalf of the state's 3 crore people. He said that Chhattisgarh's rail budget increased by 21 times in the last decade, with an allocation of Rs 6,900 crore this year. He also highlighted that rail projects worth more than Rs 47,000 crore are underway in the state. CM mentioned that new rail projects have been sanctioned for the Naxal-affected Bastar region, including the Rowghat-Jagdalpur rail line. He added that the new train service would boost tourism, education, and trade between Raipur and Jabalpur. Pilgrimage sites like Dongargarh's Maa Bamleshwari Temple and Bhedaghat in Madhya Pradesh will now be more accessible. The Assembly Speaker described the launch of the Raipur-Jabalpur Express as a historic event that will strengthen connectivity between Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh. He said the train would cover the 410-km journey in just 8 hours. Passengers will now be able to travel easily to Gondia, Balaghat, and Jabalpur, which will also give a push to regional trade and tourism. He pointed out that the 'Amrit Bharat Station Scheme' is redeveloping 32 stations, and passenger amenities are being increased at major stations like Raipur, Bilaspur, and Durg. Jabalpur-Raipur and Rewa-Pune express trains flagged off
In a major boost to inter-state travel, Jabalpur-Raipur and Rewa-Pune Express trains were flagged off on Sunday. The new services are set to improve connectivity across Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and Gujarat. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav flagged off the new services via video conferencing from Bhavnagar and Ujjain, respectively. The launch also marked the commencement of a new Bhavnagar-Ayodhya Express train service. An official release stated that the new services would enhance connectivity across Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and Gujarat. The new trains connecting Jabalpur with Raipur, Rewa with Pune (Hadapsar), and Bhavnagar with Ayodhya mark a significant expansion of the national railway network, it said. Addressing the event, Vaishnaw said Prime Minister Modi shares an emotional bond with the Indian Railways, which is the mainstay of travel for the poor and middle classes. India's First Bullet Train: Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Sunday announced that India's first bullet train between Mumbai and Ahmedabad will begin operations very soon, reducing travel time between the two cities to just 2 hours and 7 minutes. He was speaking to reporters at the Bhavnagar terminus in Gujarat after virtually flagging off three trains, namely the Ayodhya Express, Rewa Pune Express, and Jabalpur Raipur Express. He further stated that the bullet train project is progressing rapidly. 508-Kilometre Rail Corridor The 508-kilometre high-speed rail corridor will connect Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) with key cities in Gujarat, including Vapi, Surat, Vadodara, and Ahmedabad. The trains are expected to run at speeds of up to 320 km/h. Vaishnaw also outlined several upcoming railway projects in Gujarat, including a new Porbandar–Rajkot train, a Rs 135-crore coach maintenance facility at Ranavav station, a railway flyover in Porbandar, two Gati Shakti cargo terminals, and a container terminal at a developing port in Bhavnagar. He highlighted the nation's progress, saying that during the last 11 years, 34,000 km of new railway tracks have been installed under the PM Narendra Modi administration, averaging almost 12 km per day. He described the 1,300 railway stations undergoing renovation as an unprecedented endeavour in the history of Indian Railways. PM Modi's Vision Ashwini Vaishnaw pointed out that India is implementing this change while maintaining train operations and keeping stations operational, which reflects the scope of PM Modi's vision, in contrast to developed nations, where station redevelopment entails completely stopping services. Adding further, he cited the introduction of contemporary trains such as the Vande Bharat Express, the Amrit Bharat Express, and the Namo Bharat Express. Eight Amrit Bharat trains with high-class amenities and reasonably priced tickets have been introduced thus far. According to the minister, passengers have responded favorably to these new trains, which were constructed using cutting-edge technology. With the help of double-engine governments in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, significant railway projects are also progressing in those states, in addition to Gujarat, the minister highlighted.
