Sikkim MP asks for four optional languages in classes 11 and 12
The request was made in a letter and meetings with Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar in New Delhi on Monday.
Subba backed joint representation from four major community groups: Sikkim Akhil Kirat Rai Sangh, Denjong Sherpa Association, Sikkim Tamang Buddhist Association, and the All Sikkim Gurung (Tamu) Buddhist Association. He raised concerns about ministry's earlier rejection, communicated through a letter dated December 20, 2024.
'These languages are already part of the CBSE curriculum in classes 9 and 10. Discontinuing them in senior secondary classes breaks the academic continuity and undermines efforts at cultural and linguistic preservation,' Subba said. He added that the inclusion would align with the NEP 2020, which encourages multilingualism.

A BIG headload being carried by a passenger fell on others, causing the stampede at the New Delhi Railway Station on February 15 in which 18 people were killed, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed the Rajya Sabha Friday, citing a probe report. He said that a high-level inquiry committee constituted to examine the circumstances leading to the stampede has submitted its report. 'As per the findings of the report, an unfortunate incident on 15.02.25 happened on Foot Over Bridge (FOB)-3 stairs connecting Platform 14/15 at New Delhi Railway Station. On the day of the incident, sufficient crowd management protocols were in place to handle the overall volume of passengers at the station. There was a gradual increase of passenger density on the FOB after 20.15 hrs,' said Vaishnaw in a written reply to questions asked by Samajwadi Party MP Ramji Lal Suman. Passengers were trying to board Prayagraj-bound trains for the Mahakumbh when the incident occurred. Sharing the findings of the probe report, Vaishnaw said, 'Many of the passengers were carrying big headloads affecting smooth movement on the FOB. There was a big headload falling from one of the passengers and the pressure was passed on to the stairs of PF 14/15 stairs resulting in the tripping of passengers on the stairs. This led to an incident at 20.48 hrs on FOB-3, which was limited to the stairs of FOB. Consequently, passengers fell on each other. In the incident, 18 people lost their lives and 15 others were injured.' In March this year, the Railway Minister had told the Lok Sabha that on the day of the stampede the total ticket sold was 49,000 – 13,000 more than the daily average tickets sold over the previous six months. Of the 18 people who died in the stampede, 11 were women and four children. Eyewitnesses had alleged that the stampede took place because of 'lack of crowd management' at a time when a large number of people were trying to board the Prayagraj-bound trains. Following the incident, five senior officers, including the Divisional Railway Manager of Delhi, were transferred. In his written reply on Friday, Vaishnaw said that several measures have been taken after the incident to handle heavy rush at the stations. A total of 73 stations have been identified where permanent holding areas will be created. Pilot projects have started at New Delhi, Anand Vihar, Varanasi, Ayodhya, and Ghaziabad stations. 'Two new designs of 12 metre wide (40 feet) and 6 metre wide (20 feet) standard FOB have been developed. These wide FOBs with ramps were very effective in crowd management during Mahakumbh. These new standard wide FOBs will be installed in all the stations. All major stations will have a senior officer as Station Director. All other departments will report to the Station Director. Station Director will get financial empowerment so that he can take on-the-spot decisions for improving the station,' the minister said. Hyderabad: The race for a ticket to contest the bypoll to the Jubilee Hills constituency has intensified, with even a sitting MLA expressing keen interest in entering the fray. According to sources, turncoat MLA from Khairatabad, Danam Nagender , has sent feelers to the Congress leadership, indicating that if he is fielded for the bypoll, he can ensure party's victory not only in Jubilee Hills but also in Khairatabad constituency. Danam won the Khairatabad seat on a BRS ticket in 2023 and later joined the Congress ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. A senior Congress leader stated that there is a high demand for the Jubilee Hills bypoll ticket. "Almost everyone in the Congress is of the opinion that whoever wins the bypoll will be given a cabinet berth. This is because there is currently no minister in the cabinet from Greater Hyderabad. The Congress failed to win any of the 24 seats in Greater Hyderabad during the 2023 assembly election. While all of them are still BRS MLAs in the official records of the state assembly, Danam contested the Secunderabad Lok Sabha seat on a Congress ticket, without officially resigning from the BRS. There is a speculation within the ruling party that Danam could be the first among the turncoats to face disqualification if the speaker takes a decision on the legislators. "Contesting from Jubilee Hills will provide a safe alternative to Danam. Also, if he gets the ticket and wins the byelection, he will have the highest scope of making it to the cabinet. He served as a minister in the YS Rajasekhar Reddy govt in the undivided state. But the AICC will finalise the candidate for the bypoll. The Telangana Congress is getting its own surveys conducted to know the strength of various candidates in the race for the ticket," a senior leader said. Also, the Jubilee Hills seat is part of the Secunderabad Lok Sabha constituency represented by Union minister G Kishan Reddy.

Two men transporting cattle tied up, made to squat, 2 held: Bengal Police
TWO MEN were beaten, tied up and made to squat allegedly by members of a Hindu outfit, accompanied by some BJP workers, in Durgapur on Friday after they were spotted transporting cattle – including cows – police said. Two persons were arrested in connection with the incident, they added. Citing local residents, police sources said that the two men, who belong to another community, claimed that they were returning from Barjora of Bankura district after 'purchasing cows for agricultural purposes.' However, the BJP claimed that the men were asked to show proper documents regarding the purchase of cows but could not do so. Some BJP workers staged a protest over the incident. TMC MLA from Pandabeswar, Narendranath Chakraborty, said, 'This can't be allowed in Bengal. We have approached the police and demanded stern action against those who did this.' In a post on X later in the day, the West Bengal Police wrote, 'Two persons belonging to a minority community, while carrying cattle for farming purposes, were detained and severely beaten up in Durgapur by some hooligans… A case has been registered over the incident and two of the miscreants have been arrested. Raids are on to apprehend all those involved…' The police added, 'Nothing and no one will be allowed to dent our state's tradition of inclusivity and harmony.
