Why a female-led Ullozhukku's National Award win feels personal

India Today2 hours ago
In a landscape where Indian cinema has often been questioned for its representation of women, 'Ullozhukku' stands as a powerful counter-narrative. Featuring Parvathy Thiruvothu and Urvashi in the lead roles, directed by Christo Tomy, this emotionally charged film was a character study of morally flawed characters and their difficult choices. 'Ullozhukku' won Best Malayalam film, while Urvashi bagged Best Supporting Actress at the 71st National Film Awards.advertisementWhile the film is viewed as one that highlights patriarchal conditioning and women claiming agency, for me, it was an empowering film that promotes the strength of sisterhood. Director Christo Tomy crafted a powerful climax featuring the brilliant Urvashi and Parvathy, who remind us that the ultimate power a woman can hold is the power of decision-making.While there is chatter surrounding certain undeserving films and artistes winning National Awards, 'Ullozhukku' stood out as a deserving winner. The film released in theatres in June 2024 to an overwhelming positive response, garnering praise for the direction and performances of the lead cast.
'Ullozhukku', translated into English as undercurrent, revolves around three characters - Leelamma (Urvashi), her son Thomas Kutty (Prasant Murali), and daughter-in-law Anju (Parvathy Thiruvothu). Leelamma is constantly worried about Thomas Kutty, who suffers from a life-threatening disease. Anju dutifully takes good care of him. The narrative takes a twisted turn when Thomaskutty dies, and secrets begin to emerge alongside the rising floodwaters in Alappuzha, Kerala. 'Ullozhukku' talks about the complex relationship between a daughter-in-law, her mother-in-law and the underlying secrets between them. What sets 'Ullozhukku' apart is how it breaks all the stereotypes. A film that revolves around a mother-in-law and a daughter-in-law almost never shows them bickering. Christo's mother-in-law character, Urvashi's Leelamma, is not the typical villainous mother-in-law but a mother who selfishly hides her son Thomaskutty's health issues to see him married. Leelamma even openly admits to Sister Aunty that she was not trying to deceive Anju or her parents.Similarly, Parvathy's Anju is not entirely innocent. She is a woman in an unhappy marriage who has an affair, all while taking care of her terminally ill husband. This nuanced characterisation and the conflicts that arise elevate the film beyond conventional melodrama, presenting morally complex characters whose actions stem from deeply human motivations. The film never judges the two characters and their hidden motives. Instead, it shows how they are trapped in their lives.'Ullozhukku' is an exploration of unexpected solidarity between the two women who might otherwise be positioned as adversaries. Despite their differences, Leelamma and Anju share a deep sense of orphanhood - both were brought into this house through marriages that turned them into caregivers, stripped them of their individuality and confined them within four walls. For audiences who have long craved meaningful female representation in cinema, 'Ullozhukku's National Award win feels like a personal win. The film's success proves that stories centred on women's experiences - especially the often-overlooked dynamics between women in traditional family structures - can succeed and how!advertisement'Ullozhukku's win is a reminder and proof that quality filmmaking with realistic storytelling can still triumph in a landscape often dominated by commercial entertainers. The film suggests that in times of crisis - both personal and societal - it is not your family, not your in-law's family, but often the connections between women that provide stability and hope. The sisterhood that emerges in 'Ullozhukku' is not forced. It's rooted in shared experiences of displacement, duty, and the quiet sacrifices that women make.- Ends

Mahavatar Narsimha box office collection day 11: Word-of-mouth hit beats Akshay Kumar's Kesari 2, to cross Rs 100 cr today

Ashwin Kumar's mythological animated film Mahavatar Narsimha has piqued the interest of audiences. The animated film, backed by Kleem Productions and presented by Hombale Films, is on the verge of crossing Rs 100 crore at the domestic box office in just 11 days. Mahavatar Narsimha earned Rs 8 crore on its second Monday (day 11), which is much more than what last week's releases — Ajay Devgn's action comedy Son of Sardaar 2 (Rs 2.25 crore) and Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri-starrer romantic drama Dhadak 2 (Rs 1.4 crore) made on the same day. It's also higher than what Mohit Suri's romantic juggernaut Saiyaara, starring newcomers Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, earned on its third Monday (Rs 2.5 crore). As per Sacnilk, the current box office collection of Mahavatar Narsimha in India stands at Rs 99.25 crore. Thus, it's most likely that the film will cross the milestone of Rs 100 crore today, becoming the first Indian animated film to achieve the feat in the process. This figure includes earnings from all languages — with the lion's share belonging to the Hindi version, followed by Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam. It helps that Hombale Films, which has been the force behind pan-India Kannada box office hits like the KGF franchise and Kantara, is backing not only Mahavatar Narshimha, but also the next six films of the seven-part Mahavatar Cinematic Universe that Kleem Productions has envisioned. Each instalment will tell the story of a new avatar of Lord Vishnu. Mahavatar Narsimha revolves around the story of Vishnu's incarnation Narsimha, a part-man, part-lion creature, invoked by devotee Prahlada to assassinate King Hirankashyap, who enjoys Lord Brahma's boon of immunity from any kind of death. Prior to this film, the highest grossing animated film from India was VG Samant's Hanuman (2005), based on Lord Hanuman, which earned only Rs 11.68 crore at the worldwide box office. By crossing the Rs 100 crore mark, Mahavatar Narsimha has also surpassed the lifetime earnings of this year's films like Rajkummar Rao-starrer romantic comedy Bhool Chuk Maaf (Rs 74.81 crore), Sunny Deol's action film Jaat (Rs 90.34 crore), and Akshay Kumar's period courtroom drama Kesari 2: The Untold Story of Jallianwala Bagh (Rs 94.48 crore). Also Read — Mahavatar Narsimha movie review: Epic in scale, uneven in execution In an exclusive interview with SCREEN, Mahavatar Narsimha director Ashwin Kumar said he believes Indian mythology isn't fictional, but the country's own rich history. 'Mythology' is a Greek term which comes from 'mythos,' which means mithya in Sanskrit. Mithya means concocted. I do not feel, in any which way, that we have a concocted past. We have a very strong past. We should celebrate that past, the puranic tales of Bharat. Our puranic tales are very long, deep, and rooted in history,' he said, adding, 'It's about time we access those, feel proud, and build universes for future generations. It's very apparent that it wasn't done that well in the past, but it's about time that we do it now in the way it should be done.'
