Devanahalli farmers' protest: CM Siddaramaiah seeks 10 days to clarify government's stance on land acquisition
Farmers from 13 villages of Channarayapatna hobli in Devanahalli taluk are demanding shelving of acquisition of 1,777 acres of their lands for an aerospace park. They have been opposing the project for over 1,185 days.
Following the crucuial meeting, the Chief Minister's Office said that due to legal hurdles, the government would need more time to hold consultations with experts before taking a final call.
'Since the final notification was already issued in April, there is a need to discuss the pros and cons (of shelving the acquisition process). Therefore, the government will require a period of 10 days to arrive at a clear decision,' the CMO said in a statement.
'The government cannot take any actions contrary to the law. As the final notification has already been issued, there is a need to review its legal aspects. A preliminary meeting regarding this was held yesterday,' the statement added, referring to the marathon meeting held on July 3 by Mr. Siddaramaiah, Industries Minister M.B. Patil, and other officials.
'We believe in democracy and dialogue. We have not obstructed any protests. I have myself been part of the farmers' organisation, and even though protests are being held against us, we have not attempted to suppress them,' Mr. Siddaramaiah added.
The CM has called for another meeting in 10 days to finalise the government's position. With talks hitting a deadlock, farmers are likely to intensify their protests till July 15.
Earlier in the day, national leaders of Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), including Rakesh Tikait, who are in Karnataka to meet the protesting farmers, addressed a State-level convention titled 'Save Our Lands' in support of farmers.

Guarantee schemes improved people's purchasing power, helped Karnataka topper capita income, says CM Siddaramaiah
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has said that the five guarantee schemes implemented by the Congress government in the State were responsible for Karnataka becoming number one in per capita income in the country. He spoke after inaugurating and laying foundation stones for development works at Arasikere in Hassan district on Saturday. The Chief Minister said that the State ranked number one in terms of the per capita income in the country, as the purchasing power of the people increased due to the guarantee schemes. 'The people of BJP do not understand economics, and they are engaged in spreading false propaganda that the government lacks money for development works. The people will not be misled by such statements,' he maintained. Mr. Siddaramaiah said that the government was spending ₹1.2 lakh crore for development, besides ₹56,000 crore for guarantee schemes. The development works had reached people's doorsteps, he added. Referring to Congress' 'Bhagidari Nyay Sammelan' held in Delhi, the Chief Minister said that only his party designed programmes to ensure social justice for and progress of the oppressed. Rahul Gandhi, too, had articulated his understanding of the backward classes clearly in the conference, Mr. Siddaramaiah stated. Citing the development works being taken up in Arasikere constituency, the Chief Minister said that Congress MLA K.M. Shivalinge Gowda had a bright political future. He had all the qualities required to be a Minister, and also had the blessings of the people in the constituency, Mr. Siddaramaiah said. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, while addressing the gathering, stated that Mr. Shivalinge Gowda had brought more development works for his constituency Arasikere, compared to the Kanakapura and Varuna constituencies, being represented by the Deputy Chief Minister and Chief Minister respectively. 'Today is a historic day for Arasikere. Mr. Shivalinge Gowda has worked hard to get development works sanctioned for the constituency. He fought for water from Yettinahole and Hemavathi for the benefit of the people of his constituency,' Mr. Shivakumar said. Mr. Shivakumar stated that the Congress had implemented the guarantee schemes after understanding the needs of the people. 'We are into politics to improve the lives of the people, while the BJP plays with their emotions. The BJP has not implemented any project similar to the guarantee schemes launched by the Congress,' he said. Minister for Cooperation K.N. Rajanna, Housing Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan, MLA for Arasikere and Karnataka Housing Board Chairman K.M. Shivalinge Gowda, MP for Hassan Shreyas Patel, and officers were present at the programme.

Siddaramaiah Has Done More For Mysuru Than Iconic King Krishnaraja Wodeyar: Son
Bengaluru: Even as talk of a leadership change in Karnataka is yet to completely die down, Congress Member of Legislative Council and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's son Yathindra Siddaramaiah has given his father a huge endorsement, saying his contributions could be more even than an erstwhile ruler of Mysuru, who is credited with ushering in progressive reforms during the pre-Independence era. Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Yathindra Siddaramaiah said development works in the Mysuru region taken up by the Congress government during the tenure of his father equal, or are probably even more than, those by Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar. "Apart from the funds allocated during Siddaramaiah's tenure as Chief Minister, Mysuru has not received any significant funding. Our government under Siddaramaiah has carried out as much, if not more, development than what was done during Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar's time. Therefore, the opposition's claim that we have done nothing and are holding the 'Sadhana Samavesha' event here without reason is baseless and hollow," Yathindra Siddaramaiah said. The remarks came in response to a series of statements made by Karnataka BJP leaders, including state unit president BY Vijayendra, who claimed the event was less about showcasing achievements and more about political manoeuvring. "The Sadhana Samavesha is not to commemorate the chief minister's achievements or to highlight development in the Mysuru region. It is being used as a tool to threaten the high command," Mr Vijayendra claimed, hinting at internal power tussles within the Congress. He had also questioned the government's decision to hold such a high-profile event in Mysuru, claiming there was no visible progress in the region to justify it. At the event, the state government unveiled projects worth over Rs 2,500 crores for Mysuru district. 'Apologise' Yathindra Siddaramaiah's remarks were criticised by BJP leader R Ashoka who said that, by making the comparison with his father, the Congress leader had insulted King Wodiyar's family. "Contributions of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wodiyar to Old Mysore are immense. He built the KRS (Krishna Raja Sagara) reservoir and provided life-giving water, enabling people to prosper. He also built soap factories, universities, and upheld social justice," Mr Ashoka, who is also the leader of the opposition in the Karnataka Assembly, said. "Comparing someone who pawned gold jewellery to build a reservoir with those who looted 14 sites in MUDA (a reference to the alleged Mysore Urban Development Authority scam) is unacceptable. Yathindra Siddaramaiah has insulted the Maharaja's family and must apologise immediately," he said.
