Mother arrested for ‘breaking into school and stealing exam papers'
Police are investigating after the theft at a girl's school in Andong, a city about 167 miles south of the capital Seoul, in the middle of the night last month.
While the teacher had left the school last year, she still knew the security code and her biometric data was still stored in the system, allowing her to scan her fingerprint and enter the premises, it is alleged.
The duo then proceeded to the third-floor faculty office where the exam papers are stored, but were stopped when the school's security alarm sounded.
They managed to flee, but were arrested the following day.
'A 31-year-old teacher and the 48-year-old mother have confessed to the crime,' a detective at the Andong Police Station confirmed.
A facilities manager at the school was also arrested for allegedly allowing the mother and teacher to break in and then later manipulating the security footage.
Investigators suspect the mother had been paying the teacher two million won (£1,075) per exam period, for more than two years, totalling about 20 million won (£10,750).
The school claimed that the teacher had accessed the premises seven times since she resigned last year, each time during exam season.
'Straight out of a drama'
'It's shocking to think something like this, which feels straight out of a drama, happened in our community,' the mother of another middle-school student at the school told the local media outlet Korea JoongAng Daily.
'There are rumours that the mother did this to get her daughter into medical school,' she added.
The teacher and mother first met in 2020 when the teacher taught the mother's eldest daughter. She then also taught the younger daughter at the centre of this scandal in 2023, whom she was also privately tutoring, which is prohibited by Korean law.
The student, who was reportedly top in her class, has been expelled following the arrests and has had all her previous test scores invalidated.
South Korea is known for placing crippling pressure on students to excel academically and goes to great lengths to maximise this success.

Elsewhere, Gyu-jin watches the shooting case on the news, which gives him the idea of buying a gun. They bring up his time in the military and how he has taken out 99 targets, insinuating that he decided to kill Won-seong to add to his list, making it 100 targets. Suddenly, Chief Yoon enters the interrogation room and stops the enquiry. He orders Lee Do to follow him, claiming that he saved the police officers — something the disciplinary committee is unaware of. He calls the committee cowards and asks them to arrest him first if they are looking for a scapegoat. Chief Yoon asks Lee Do to go home and rest. Many reporters are waiting outside the police station, so Hyun-sik leads him out and drives him home. At school, Yeong-dung is forced by the bullies to attack his friend Gyu-jin. Yeong-dung finds him studying at his desk and punches him. He then orders Gyu-jin to bring his mother's ID to school. Following the incident, Lee Do is suspended for three months. Before leaving the station, he asks Officer Jang a follow-up on U-tae, but another officer stops him since he is suspended. Hyun-sik comes to his rescue and, under the pretence of needing the information, they update Lee Do that U-tae was rescued. The number plate of the van is the same as the one Lee Do had run into when delinquents were going through delivery boxes. Lee Do learns that U-tae was recently released from prison and was doing odd jobs for Glory Gang leader Seok-ho. He tries calling Seok-ho, but he does not answer. Lee Do gets his whereabouts from Detective Seo and visits him. Lee Do wants to know if Seok-ho is dealing guns, but he proves that all his boys only use knives, and none of them have been out with guns. Lee Do tells Seok-ho that he is gathering evidence about the case, and he warns that he will not spare Seok-ho if he finds out that he was involved in the case. Later, Lee Do heads to Dongwol Industry to ask about Moon-baek. His card shows that he is a technical sales manager at the company. However, the company is a defence contractor and is not authorised to give any information about its employees. Lee Do gets a call from Officer Jang with Moon-baek's home address. He heads to the apartments and gives Moon-baek a call, asking to meet. At the same time, Jung-man and his boys get more information about the guns from Mr. Kim. It turns out that Jung-man decided to keep him alive and lied to Seok-ho. Mr Kim tells them how the guns are delivered as parcels. He thinks it is a genius idea since Koreans have a high respect for other people's parcels. Mr. Kim says that he was approached to distribute the guns. The people in charge had a truckload of guns, but Mr. Kim was given half. He has no way of contacting them since they only reached out via telegram, and Seok-ho took his phone. The guns are still locked in the storage room, and Seok-ho has not found them either. For now, their only option is to collect guns from the people on the address list. Jung-man sends out his boys to collect all the guns. Elsewhere, Ms. Kyung-sook continues her solo protest outside the company she believes is responsible for her son's death. The CEO continues to ignore her as he drives past the gates. Meanwhile, the bullies continue to threaten Gyu-jin, demanding that he give them his mother's ID. Later that night, Gyu-jin receives a package and inside is a gun. Lee Do meets up with Moon-baek and asks for more information about the gun and bullets. Moon-baek says that he wanted the gun to kill himself. Moon-baek has cancer, and the doctors say he only has six months left to live or less. He shows Lee Do the scars, indicating that he has had three surgeries. About how he got the bullets, he says that he looked online and saw a site offering free guns and clicked to get one. After receiving his parcel, the site disappeared. As for the list of addresses, Moon-baek says he threw it away but can remember the addresses by heart. Lee Do asks him to write down the addresses, and one of them belongs to Ms. Kyung-sook. Upon seeing Kyung-sook's name, Lee Do rushes out, and Moon-baek follows. On the way, he tries to call Kyung-sook but gets no answer. At this time, she confronts the CEO, who has been ignoring her since her son's death. The CEO is still arrogant and orders his driver to run over her. However, when she pulls out the gun, the driver runs away, and the CEO starts begging for his life. Kyung-sook shoots the CEO, then answers Lee Do's call. She tells him that she shot the CEO and knows she has to answer for her actions. She asks Lee Do to let her make one last meal for her son. Kyung-sook heads home and waits for Lee Do to arrive. Unfortunately, U-tae and the boys arrive at the house first. They force their way into the house and ask Kyung-sook to hand over the gun. When Lee Do arrives, he sees a car with similar number plates parked outside her house. He asks Moon-baek to keep an eye on the car as he heads into the house. U-tae is arrogant at first because he is holding the gun, but Lee Do easily snatches the gun from him. The boys try to fight, but they are no match for him. Outside, Moon-baek finds the events happening around Lee Do exciting, so he helps him by subduing the boys left in the car. At the end of Trigger Episode 4, Lee Do and Moon-baek rush Kyung-sook to the hospital. She was hurt during the confrontation with U-tae and the boys. The Episode Review The availability of guns affecting a person close to Lee Do adds an emotional curve to the story. It is now personal, and Lee Do will come after the gang. It also foreshadows the next conflict, which may arise from a high school student, Gyu-jin. While the bullies continue to suffocate him with physical abuse and online bullying, Gyu-jin stumbled upon the website and received a gun. Jung-man Episode 8 of Trigger starts where we left off with the police operation to arrest Jung-man and Jung-man's counter-operation to take over Seok-ho's business. Mr. Kim arrives at the club to meet with Seok-ho, and the police storm in after him. At the bathhouse, Jung-man's men butcher all of Seok-ho's men. At the clubhouse, Mr. Kim and Seok-ho kill each other. Jung-man then takes his men to clear out Seok-ho's stack house, taking all the money. Jung-man knew that Seok-ho had sold him out to the police. Lee Do receives an update that Jung-man did not appear at the club. He sees Jung-man arrive back at the hideout with his boys. Jung-man takes the money upstairs to the waiting crew, and they are overjoyed that their plan worked. However, their joy is short-lived as Lee Do raids their hideout. Jung-man tries to escape, but Lee Do uses his sniper skills to stop his car and incapacitate him. The police take Jung-man and the boys into custody and seize all the guns in their possession. With the guns seized from Jung-man, the police report that they have arrested the organisation responsible for distributing the guns, giving them an advantage with the public. Moon-baek is dejected, and Jack is furious. The number of guns seized by the police will lead to an investigation and a high likelihood of the CIA getting involved. As such, their operations will be jeopardised. Jack orders Moon-baek to wrap up the operations in South Korea and head back home. In a turn of events, Hyun-sik's daughter takes her life. She was roped into a scam that made her lose all her money, including the money she had borrowed from Hyun-sik's pension. Elsewhere, the National Security Council receives more information on the organisation behind the guns from the CIA. The International Rifle Union is a major player in the black market and is involved in the sales and distribution of guns. The organisation is backed by powerful politicians and global corporations, giving it immense power. The person in charge of overseeing the weapons distribution in South Korea is Blue-Brown, aka Moon-baek. Meanwhile, Moon-baek listens in as the nurses continue to harass one of them. She had been working at the hospital for a week without breaks, and when she wanted to go home for a change of clothes, the nurses told her to wash the ones she had on and get back to the nurse's station. Later, Moon-baek meets up with Reporter Wang. Moon-baek pays him a lot of money to make sure that he captures when people use his guns. He intends to use the videos to appeal to people's fear and emotions, making every Korean citizen interested in owning a gun. Meanwhile, Lee Do realises that the guns distributed have a tracking device. He takes the device to his army friend and learns that the tracking device is capable of wiretapping. However, the device alone cannot listen in on conversations because it needs an assistive device. Lee Do heads back to the station and looks through all the guns for the assistive device, but only finds the GPS. He gets a call from Detective Seo and learns that another common occurrence among all the people who had guns was that their phones were hacked. Lee Do arrives at the NSU for a briefing and learns that whenever the IRU wants to venture into a new area, they start by leaving bullets to indicate their intention. In this case, the first victim did not take his own life but was killed by Moon-baek. He is the one who trafficked Moon-baek as a child, and the NSU believes that Moon-baek is back to take revenge on the country that abandoned him. While still at the base of the joint investigation, Lee Do receives a call from Moon-baek. Moon-baek has hacked into the system using a gun sneaked in by one of the employees. Moon-baek tells Lee Do that another citizen is about to use a gun. He shows him footage of Hyun-sik, who gets out of his car with a gun in hand and walks into a club. Moon-baek challenges Lee Do to try to save him. While Lee Do rushes to get to Hyun-sik, the investigation team reverse engineers the chip from the guns to get Moon-baek's location. While Hyun-sik goes down the warpath and attacks the men responsible for scamming his daughter, Lee Do rushes to his location, hoping to stop him. The other detectives follow the location of the GPS, hoping to arrest Moon-baek, but he has already anticipated this move. The Episode Review With two more episodes to go, we are narrowing down the subplots and focusing on the main plot. The police are now aware of the organisation behind the gun distribution and Moon-baek's motive. He wants to destroy the country that destroyed him by using the weak to take down their bullies and establish a new world order. The next episodes will showcase the showdown between the protagonist, Lee Do and his team versus the bad guys. Who will come out on top? By using Hyung-sik, Moon-baek is making this chase more personal for Lee Do. He is bringing the shooting cases close to home. Hyung-sik is Lee Do's father figure. Gang War Episode 7 of Trigger starts where we left off at the school shooting. Before getting to the school, Lee Do had received a call from Officer Jang with updates on Moon-baek's identity. Moon-baek was seen in all the addresses on the address lists, indicating that he has a hand in the gun distribution. At school, Gyu-jin points his gun at Seong-jun, but he does not shoot. Lee Do manages to calm him down and takes the gun from him. Moon-baek gives Lee Do a thumbs up as Lee Do consoles Gyu-jin. After the incident, Gyu-jin and Yeong-dung are arrested. Gyu-jin's mother breaks down when she him being led to the police car. Lee Do had told Detective Seo to arrest Moon-baek after the incident. However, Moon-baek soon disappears into the crowd. Lee Do remembers that Officer Jang had told him that Moon-baek's identity is fake since the Moon-baek who worked at the defence contract company was a different person. Lee Do heads home and finds a package at his door. There are also address lists with his name on them. After a meeting with other gang leaders, Seok-ho decides to back out of the deal with Moon-baek and calls Lee Do. Just then, Chief Yoon reinstates Lee Do before the end of the three-month suspension and orders him to join the investigation team. Lee Do meets up with Seok-ho, who tells him all about the guns found in the storage room, Mr. Kim and Jung-man's people lurking around the storage room. Seok-ho promises to cooperate as long as Lee Do helps him out of the situation with guns. The police officers collecting guns find out that another group of people posing as police officers have rounded up half of the guns from the delivery address. During a meeting with the superiors, Chief Yoon is ordered to hand over the case to the Joint Investigations Office, which is now setting up base. At a hospital, a nurse is bullied by other nurses because she graduated from a lower-grade university. The head nurse looked down on her and ordered her to give other nurses off duty for irrelevant reasons while forcing her to work their shifts. The discussion about guns all over the news and the debate has started speculating on the legalisation of gun ownership in Korea. Moon-baek watches the news from the penthouse, where his team is still tracking the gun usage. More and more people have access to their guns. However, he is disappointed that no one is using them, wondering why there are no street shootouts or police showdowns. Chief Yoon is convinced that Moon-baek is responsible for the influx of guns. Therefore, he convinces the superiors to allow an investigation into his whereabouts. The joint team can look into Moon-baek while Chief Yoon and his police officers work on finding as many guns as they can. Meanwhile, Jung-man and his boys have a hold of guns. Mr. Kim tries to pressure him to attack Seok-ho, but Jung-man tells him to wait for the right moment. Earlier, Seok-ho mentioned wanting to take over Mr. Kim's businesses. Therefore, Seok-ho shows up and Jung-man's base with Mr. Kim's phone. He wants to access the phone's data for the list of Mr. Kim's clients, so he orders Jung-man to bring him Mr. Kim's fingerprints. Lee Do hangs around Jung-man's area because Seok-ho had promised to help him get to Mr Kim. Seok-ho believes that Jung-man knows of Mr. Kim's whereabouts, so he puts a plan in motion to make Jung-man bring him out. The following morning, Jung-man and his boys head out to dig out the graves. A detective and Seok-ho's team are on their trail, following their every move. Seok-ho plans to use the police to get rid of Jung-man. Meanwhile, Jung-man has his plan in motion. After digging the graves, Jung-man and the boys go to the public bathhouse, as it is their routine. Seok-ho's men force them out of the bathhouse, telling Jung-man that Seok-ho is waiting for Mr. Kim's fingers. A man exits the bathhouse heading to Seok-ho's club. Seok-ho also gets a text from Jung-man saying that he is on the way. The police surround the club, waiting to capture Jung-man. However, the person who walks into the club is not Jung-man but Mr. Kim. Jung-man's plan was to play Seok-ho and the police. He sends Mr. Kim to meet with Seok-ho while he ambushes Seok-ho's men sent to keep an eye on him at the public bathhouse. The Episode Review Moon-baek is not who he claims to be, and Lee Do is onto him. In this episode, the police are making efforts to find the weapons and stop the civilian killings. At the same time, the gang war has finally escalated. The hidden game continues, and this time it is about crossing and double-crossing.
