Trent Alexander-Arnold and Liverpool squad in Dubai hotel with $33,000-a-night rooms

Liverpool's players were spotted inside a luxurious hotel in Dubai as they enjoyed a few days off following Sunday's game against Arsenal.
Eight days separate Liverpool's 2-2 draw with the Gunners and next Monday's trip to Brighton, so Arne Slot allowed himself and his players some downtime in order to continue celebrating their Premier League title win.
While Slot took the decision to head to Ibiza, where he was spotted spending time with Wayne Lineker, Liverpool's players headed to Atlantis The Royal — a luxury hotel in Dubai. Virgil van Dijk and co were pictured strolling through the hotel, as well as also spending time on a luxury yacht off the coast of the United Arab Emirates.

Alexander-Arnold is not visible in any of the footage of the trip which has been circulating, but it is believed that he is there, as the vacation was apparently partly organized as a farewell trip for the right-back, who is set to join Real Madrid at the end of the season.
Reported to be one of the finest hotels in the world, lavish suites at Atlantis The Royal can set guests back from $9,000 to $33,000 per night when booked at short notice. The Skyscape Penthouse — the cheaper of those two options — boasts a large terrace with an infinity pool, a jacuzzi and views of the Arabian Sea.
Even the cheapest rooms at the hotel cost more than $1,000 per night; it is not clear which rooms the Liverpool players have been staying in.
While the players have been enjoying the sunny weather in the Middle East, head coach Slot has also been having plenty of fun of his own in the Balearic Islands, partying at the famous O Beach club.
Drinks can cost thousands of dollars at O Beach, which is co-owned by Wayne Lineker — the brother of former England star Gary — with the priciest item on the menu a six-liter bottle of Armand de Brignac brut, which costs €9,500 ($10,500).
A 15-liter bottle of Veuve Clicquot Nebuchadnezzar will set customers back €4,900 ($5,450), while a three-liter bottle of Dom Perignon is priced at €3,750 ($4,150).
Other outlandishly pricey items — although ones which most people could still stretch to — include a glass of fresh fruit juice, which costs a whopping €10 ($11), and a can of Red Bull, which costs €7 ($8).
Lineker shared a picture of himself alongside Slot, accompanied by the caption "Caption this #ynwa", while he also shared a video of Slot being serenaded to the tune of We Are the Champions by Queen.

Liverpool is winless in its two games since it clinched the league last month, after allowing a two-goal lead to slip against Arsenal. Speaking after the game, Arne Slot said of the Reds' failure to close the game out: "Unfortunately, we had 15 to 20 minutes where we played with the same intensity [to the previous weekend at Chelsea, when Liverpool lost 3-1].
"It is not completely bad, but I miss a little bit – and the first 15 or 20 minutes of the second half were similar to what we saw last week, where we played really good with the ball, came into so many promising positions but in the final third we were not that decisive. And defending last week, the few goals we conceded were – let's put it positively – not so good. That I saw in the first 15 minutes after half-time, but the first half was great."

Gabriel interview: ‘As Arteta said – Arsenal are ready to reach new heights this season'

When asked why he chose to commit to a new contract with Arsenal, Gabriel was succinct: 'I have only one thing to say, and Mikel said it: we are ready to reach new heights this season.' Gabriel knows it is time for him, manager Mikel Arteta and the club's other players to deliver. For three seasons in a row, Arsenal have finished as the Premier League's runners-up — five, two and 10 points behind the respective title-winners. Advertisement Speaking to reporters before the north London club's three-match pre-season tour to Singapore and Hong Kong, the 27-year-old Brazil international centre-back said: 'I don't think we can make excuses. Over the past three years, we've done everything we could. We just lacked a bit of luck. But within the club, I truly believe we're all convinced that we can win trophies — big trophies.' That belief is the basis of Gabriel's desire to continue an Arsenal career that began in the summer of 2020 with a move from French club Lille. Last month, he signed a new contract until 2029. That's a significant coup for Arsenal. Along with Bukayo Saka and William Saliba, Gabriel was one of a trio of important players with deals set to expire in 2027. For the second time in three years, the South American became the first of those three players to put pen to paper. It lays down a marker of his and Arsenal's shared ambition. The hope is that others will follow suit. 'I've already been at the club five years, and I can see the progress that's happening here,' Gabriel tells The Athletic. 'I'm here to win titles, to achieve things, to help make Arsenal even bigger. I truly believe this upcoming season will be a big challenge for us, but I also believe we can win things. We have a great chance of winning a trophy.' Recent seasons may have been frustrating for Arsenal in terms of silverware but Gabriel believes they also demonstrate progress. 'In the last few years, we were very close to winning things, and it ended up slipping away,' he says. 'But I have complete confidence in the club and everything they're doing to help it grow, and I'm certain that this year we'll be fighting again.' To help them take that crucial final step, Arsenal have made a number of first-team signings. Gabriel has been at the club's training camp in the Spanish resort of La Manga with the newcomers Kepa Arrizabalaga, Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard. Noni Madueke has signed from Chelsea, but will join up with the squad in August due to his participation in the FIFA Club World Cup. There are potentially more arrivals to come before the window closes on September 1 — Arsenal have also been working on deals for Cristhian Mosquera and Viktor Gyokeres. 'At a club like Arsenal, of course what we want is to have the best players,' says Gabriel. 'We want to fight for trophies, so we need to have the best. When players arrive, the advice I give them is to focus and try to adapt as quickly as possible, because we're already working really hard. So I believe they're already quite in sync with us, and I believe this year we can achieve great things.' Advertisement There's a strong likelihood Gabriel will soon be reunited with Gyokeres — a player he faced in the Champions League last season as Arsenal beat Sporting CP of Portugal. 'For sure, when we played against him, it was a big challenge for us,' said the centre-back about facing the 27-year-old Sweden international striker. 'What we know now is that he's a great player, who definitely had a great season last year (54 club goals in 52 appearances).' Gabriel missed the 2024-25 run-in after suffering a season-ending hamstring tear in early April. He is approaching full fitness now, and is confident of being available for the start of the new campaign in a month's time. 'I'm progressing really well — I'm already training with the group,' he says. 'It was a bit of a long process, but I'm feeling good now. I'm working harder every day to get ready. It's going to be a season full of challenges, but we want to win, so I'm giving my best. I'm already in a good place to be able to play.' Arsenal will step up preparations with three friendlies during their tour. They play Milan and Newcastle United on July 23 and 27 respectively in Singapore, before facing Tottenham in a north London derby in Hong Kong on July 31. If Gabriel sees out his new contract, it will mean he'll have been at the Emirates Stadium for nearly a decade. His first five years have been a period in which he's experienced considerable growth. 'It's everything,' says Gabriel. 'I believe I've grown a lot. And I definitely started working much harder, both on and off the pitch. I believe I've been improving more and more, with the help of my team-mates, my coaches. I'm definitely reaching a very good level, and I want to continue with this leadership, this spirit, because I know I'm a role model, even for my team-mates.' Asked to cite an area where he's seen most progress, he says: 'My leadership on the pitch; I believe I've improved a lot there.' Advertisement Gabriel's contract extension brings to an end any speculation over his immediate future. His performances have attracted interest from elsewhere, including the Saudi Pro League, but he dismissed the idea that he ever contemplated leaving Arsenal. 'I didn't hear about anything personally,' shrugs Gabriel. 'People say a lot of things on the internet. It didn't take my focus away — I was just focused on Arsenal. This is where I want to win trophies.' Starting from now.

England's Jess Carter reveals racial abuse at Euro 2025, FA has contacted police

ZURICH (AP) — England defender Jess Carter says she has been subject to racial abuse online at the Women's European Championship. Carter came in for a lot of criticism for her performance during England's opening loss to France. And some of that has crossed the line even as the 27-year-old and the Lionesses have reached the semifinals at Euro 2025. 'From the start of the tournament I have experienced a lot of racial abuse,' Carter wrote in an emotional post on Instagram on Sunday. 'Whilst I feel every fan is entitled to their opinion on performance and result I don't agree or think it's ok to target someone's appearance or race.' Carter, who has made 49 appearances for England and plays for Gotham FC, says she will be taking a step back from social media. 'As ever I am grateful for all of the support from the genuine fans but I am taking this measure to protect myself in a bid to keep my focus on helping the team anyway I can,' she added. The Football Association has contacted police back in the United Kingdom. 'Our priority is Jess and giving her all the support she needs,' FA CEO Mark Bullingham said. 'We strongly condemn those responsible for this disgusting racism. 'As soon as we were made aware of the racist abuse Jess received, we immediately contacted UK police. They are in touch with the relevant social media platform, and we are working with police to ensure those responsible for this hate crime are brought to justice.' England plays Italy in the semifinals on Tuesday in Geneva, after a dramatic comeback against Sweden last week saw the Lionesses win a chaotic penalty shootout. ___

Darwin Nunez scores hat-trick in Liverpool's five-goal friendly win against Stoke

Darwin Nunez scored a hat-trick as Liverpool beat Stoke City 5-0 in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Kirkby. The Uruguayan striker, whose future at Anfield is uncertain amid interest from clubs in both Europe and Saudi Arabia, continued his impressive start to pre-season having also netted in last weekend's 3-1 win at Preston & North End. Advertisement Nunez's treble and a goal from teenage winger Rio Ngumoha helped Arne Slot's side race into a 4-0 half-time lead against the Championship outfit on Sunday. Liverpool record signing Florian Wirtz started the game, making his first appearance since completing a £116million move from Bayer Leverkusen. The Germany international operated behind a front three of Mohamed Salah, Nunez and Ngumoha. Federico Chiesa was among the players introduced in the second half and he completed the scoring with Liverpool's fifth goal. Slot's squad fly off on their pre-season of Asia on Sunday evening, their first stop is Hong Kong where they will face AC Milan next Saturday at the new 50,000-capacity Kai Tak Stadium. Liverpool will then head for Tokyo as the club visit Japan for the first time since the 2005 Club World Championship final when Rafael Benitez's side lost 1-0 against Sao Paolo. Local team Yokohama F Marinos, who are bottom of the 20-team J1 League, will provide the opposition at the 72,000-capacity Nissan Stadium on July 30. ()
