Huge Plume Rises, Smoke Fills Sky After Deadly Explosion In Syria

A powerful explosion in Idlib, Syria, killed at least two and injured over 70. Fires and panic ensued near Maarrat Misrin.
A powerful explosion tore through the northwestern Syrian province of Idlib on Thursday, killing at least two people and injuring more than 70, according to state news agency SANA. The blast occurred near the town of Maarrat Misrin, sending a towering plume into the sky and triggering widespread panic in nearby villages, including al-Foua.
Syrian state broadcaster Ikhbariya reported that fires broke out in the area as ambulances and civil defence teams rushed to the site. Raed Al-Saleh, Syria's minister for emergency and disaster management, said teams were carrying out evacuation and rescue operations despite ongoing secondary blasts that were complicating the response.
'No final toll of casualties has been confirmed," Al-Saleh posted on X, urging residents to avoid the area as teams continued working under dangerous and complex conditions.
Turkish state-run news agency Anadolu put the death toll at five, reporting that around 15 explosions occurred at an arms depot in the town of Kafriya, damaging nearby buildings and injuring at least 63 others.
The Emergency Operations Directorate in Idlib also confirmed casualties from the still-unexplained explosion. While the cause remains unclear, private broadcaster Syria TV suggested it may have originated from an ammunition depot.
The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights added that unidentified aircraft were flying over the region at the time of the blast, though there has been no official confirmation of an airstrike.
Syria TV reported that 'war remnants and ammunition" had exploded at the site, triggering a series of deadly blasts. The channel's correspondent said several people may have been trapped under the rubble.
'The area witnessed successive explosions as a result of the detonation of war remnants and munitions present at the site," the broadcaster said.
There was no immediate indication that the Idlib blast was connected to recent deadly fighting in Syria's southern Sweida province, where violent clashes between pro-government forces and local militias have left hundreds dead in recent weeks.

Kerala nuns' arrest: Sessions court in Chhattisgarh declines bail plea, refers case to Bilaspur HC

Raipur/Thiruvananthapuram: In a setback for two Kerala-based nuns currently lodged in Durg jail, a sessions court on Wednesday declined to entertain their bail plea, directing the petitioners to approach the NIA-designated bench at the Chhattisgarh High Court in Bilaspur. The court ruled that it lacked jurisdiction to hear the bail application in the matter, which is being probed under the provisions of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) Act. Despite insistence from the nuns' counsel, the court dismissed the plea. Just before the sessions court began its hearing, a group of Bajarang Dal activists gathered and started shouting slogans against the nuns and the way they were trying to cover up a case that, according to them, involved human trafficking and forced religious conversion. The complainant in the case is Ravi Nigam. A battery of five lawyers represented him in court during the proceedings. Advocate Jaiswal, present in the court, said the sessions court is not competent to hear the case and asked them to approach the High Court. As the news came, the Bajarang Dal activists, waiting outside the court, erupted in celebration. The issue was raised in both houses of Parliament, though it was not taken up for discussion. Earlier, all MPs from Kerala staged a protest outside the parliament. Later, Congress-led UDF MPs called on Union Home Minister Amit Shah and briefed him on the matter. Senior lawmakers, including AICC general secretary K.C. Venugopal, have sought an appointment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to bring the issue before him. Venugopal, speaking in the Lok Sabha, said this is a burning issue in Kerala. Centre must intervene as the Chhattisgarh Chief Minister is not acting responsibly, he said. "Spoke in Parliament demanding the immediate release of Sister Vandana and Sister Preethi belonging to the Assisi Sisters of Mary Immaculate, who were brutally attacked by Bajrang Dal goons in Durg in Chhattisgarh and later arrested by the police without any reason. Instead of upholding the Constitution, the Chhattisgarh CM is validating the mob narrative that took the law into their own hands for their hateful agenda. The PM and Kerala BJP wax eloquent about their newfound love for Christians, but in reality, have venom in their hearts against minorities," Venugopal posted on X. Earlier in the day, a delegation led by CPI(M) politburo member Brinda Karat and including MPs A.A. Rahim, K. Radhakrishnan, and Jose K. Mani visited the nuns in jail. Karat condemned the arrest, calling it a clear case of fabricated charges. 'The nuns are completely innocent. This is a targeted move against Christians. We demand their immediate release and quashing of the case,' she said. Back in Kerala, both the ruling LDF and the Congress-led UDF launched separate protests. Senior Congress leaders, including KPCC president K. Sudhakaran and Leader of Opposition V.D. Satheesan, marched to the Kerala Raj Bhavan, demanding urgent action. 'This is unacceptable. These nuns are known for their humanitarian work. The Centre must act decisively,' said Satheesan. Later in the evening, Church leaders and members of the Christian community will hold a protest march to the Raj Bhavan. The two nuns -- Sister Preeti Mary and Sister Vandana Francis -- belong to the Assisi Sisters of Mary Immaculate, a congregation under the Syro-Malabar Church in Alappuzha district. They had been working at a hospital in Agra. On July 26, while accompanying three women from Chhattisgarh's Narayanpur district to Agra for jobs as kitchen helpers in a convent, the nuns and a man, Sukhman Mandavi, were stopped at a Chhattisgarh railway station by Bajrang Dal activists and later taken into custody by police. They were produced before a local court and sent to judicial custody. With the sessions court now directing the matter to the High Court, the nuns will remain in jail until further orders.

2 posing as spiritual healers held for duping Delhi woman

New Delhi, Jul 30 (PTI) Two self-proclaimed spiritual healers were arrested for allegedly duping a woman of Rs 37,000 by convincing her to pay for rituals to remove 'negative energy" from her house in Delhi's Patel Nagar area, an official said on Wednesday. The complainant alleged that she was approached by one of the accused, promising to resolve her personal issues through some rituals, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Nidhin Valsan. The accused were identified as Md Nazir, 41, and Md Raja Khan, 30. The woman had filed a police complaint on May 21, said police. A case under section 318(4) (cheating) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was registered, and police carried out an extensive technical analysis of call records, bank transactions, and digital footprints, which led them to the suspects in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, the officer said. 'During interrogation, the duo told police that they created fake social media profiles claiming to resolve issues related to business, jobs, relationships, and health," Valsan said. The victim was emotionally manipulated over a period of time and asked to transfer Rs 37,000 in multiple instalments to different accounts. The duo also staged elaborate fraudulent setups, including fake ritual videos and intimidating messages, to gain the woman's trust and extort more money. The suspects used multiple bank accounts and digital layering methods to conceal their trail, he added. They even threatened her with dire consequences when she stopped paying, the officer said. Efforts are underway to identify more victims and ascertain whether the accused had other associates involved in similar scams, Valsan said. 30-Year-Old Woman, Al Qaeda Terror Module Head, Arrested From Bengaluru

A 30-year-old woman has been arrested from Bengaluru for her alleged links with Al Qaeda. Sama Parveen, arrested by the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad, is an alleged 'mastermind of the Al-Qaeda terror module' in India. Parveen's arrest comes days after four terrorists associated with the Al-Qaeda in Indian Subcontinent were arrested. Crackdown On Al-Qaeda Module In India On June 10, Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) Deputy Superintendent of Police Harsh Upadhyay received intelligence that Instagram accounts like "@sharyat_ya_shahadat", "@f4rdeen_03", "@_mujahideen1", "@mujahideen.3", and "@sefullah_muja_hid313" are being used to spread anti-national and provocative messages. Terrorist content, videos, and ideology of the banned terrorist organisation Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) were being shared from these Instagram accounts, allegedly to provoke Muslim youth of the country and promote violence against the Indian government. ATS formulated a special investigation team, headed by Superintendent of Police K Siddharth, to crack down on the brains behind the social media accounts. The team identified four operators of the alleged Instagram accounts - Fardeen Sheikh (Fatehwadi, Ahmedabad), Saifullah Qureshi (Modasa, Gujarat), Mohammad Faiq (Chandni Chowk, Delhi), and Zeeshan Ali (Noida, Uttar Pradesh) - and arrested them on July 21 and 22. What Investigation Revealed During the investigation, AQIS literature promoting terrorism and a sword were recovered from Fardeen Sheikh. A video of him waving a sword and saying, "Bas yehi kami thi, ab sab pura ho gaya... Allahu Akbar! (This was the only thing left, not everything is complete)" was also recovered from his mobile phone. Provocative videos, content, messages encouraging religious violence and terrorist attacks and posts in support of Sharia law were found on the mobile and Instagram accounts of all four. Mohammad Faiq was also in contact with Pakistan's Instagram accounts @gujjar_sab.111 and M Salauddin Siddiqui 1360. A case has been registered against all four under various sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 (UAPA) and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The four accused are currently under police remand and are being interrogated. ATS is also investigating 62 social media accounts.
