Seven-month-old baby dies at childcare centre in Taman Danau Kota
Wangsa Maju deputy police chief Supt Syahrul Anuar Abdul Wahab said the victim's father lodged a report at the Setapak Police Station a few hours after the incident, which was believed to have occurred between 9 am and 11 am.
'The baby's body was sent to hospital for a post-mortem to identify the cause of death and the case has been classified under Section 31(1) of the Child Act 2001,' he said in a statement today.
He said an investigation is being conducted by the D11 (Sexual, Women and Child Investigation) Division of the Kuala Lumpur Police Headquarters and urged those with information regarding the incident to assist in the investigation. — Bernama

KOTA BARU: Police have arrested five suspects believed to be involved in illegal moneylending activities, including threats and acts of mischief, such as splashing red paint on borrowers' homes. Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the suspects, aged between 25 and 39, were detained under Ops Vulture in separate raids. The first suspect was apprehended on Wednesday (July 23) in Pasir Tumboh, Kubang Kerian, while the other four were arrested on Friday following a red paint incident in Pasir Hor. Police also seized 34 items believed to have been used in these activities, including red paint, threatening notes, clothing, face masks, mobile phones, and motorcycles. "Preliminary investigations revealed that all five suspects are believed to be linked to at least nine cases of property damage in Kota Baru, Tumpat, and Tanah Merah. "Their actions included breaking window panes with stones, pasting threatening notes, and padlocking borrowers' gates as a form of intimidation," he said in a statement on Sunday night. Mohd Yusoff said the case is being investigated under Section 5(2) of the Moneylenders Act 1951 and Sections 427/506 of the Penal Code. NRES Prioritises Four Key Projects Under MADANI Programmes In Pendang, Kedah
KUALA LUMPUR, July 27 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) is focusing on four key projects under its MADANI Adopted Village (KAM) and MADANI Adopted School (SAM) programmes in Pendang, Kedah. In a statement today, NRES said the KAM project, with a budget of RM1 million, covers Kampung Nangka Siam and Kampung Lahar Tunjung, and is expected to be completed by October. Meanwhile, the SAM project, with a RM100,000 allocation, is focused on upgrading facilities at Sekolah Kebangsaan Pokok Asam (SKPA). The KAM initiative includes constructing tube wells as an alternative water source, improving village roads, and upgrading the community hall and cemetery in Kampung Lahar Tunjung, all aimed at creating a sustainable and resilient rural community. On Friday, NRES also organised the KAM Semarak Desa programme at Kampung Nangka Siam, offering various community engagement activities and services. The event, officiated by NRES secretary-general Datuk Dr Ching Thoo a/l Kim, featured cultural performances such as Siamese dance, silat, and muay thai, along with service counters from the Health Ministry, National Registration Department, Road Transport Department, and Amanah Saham Nasional Berhad, as well as an elephant show by the Department of Wildlife and National Parks. The KAM initiative is supported by a whole-of-government approach, involving several agencies, including the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development, Kedah Federal Development Office, Tenaga Nasional Berhad, and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission. It aims to uplift the well-being of rural communities by improving basic infrastructure and addressing local development challenges. Under the SAM programme, the RM100,000 allocation for SKPA will fund the maintenance of classroom facilities and support the implementation of a smart classroom, as well as Digital Learning Enhancement activities to equip students with relevant digital skills.

Japan discards state-acquired Covid-19 drugs worth US$1.6bil
TOKYO: (Bernama-Kyodo) The Japanese government discarded Covid-19 oral medicines believed to be worth around 240 billion yen (US$1.6 billion) in the fiscal year through March as they had passed their expiry dates, Kyodo News Agency reported, citing health ministry officials on Wednesday (July 16). While the exact purchase price remains unclear, the value was calculated in accordance with current prices. The amount is enough to treat some 2.5 million people. The government acquired the oral drugs at the height of the coronavirus pandemic and provided them free of charge to hospitals and clinics nationwide. But many of them were unused after Covid-19 was downgraded to the same category as seasonal influenza in May 2023, which required people to pay for Covid-19 treatment. Drugmakers had also started general distribution of Covid-19 medicine in Japan themselves. A Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare official said offering the drugs to other countries was considered but legally difficult. Among the two million doses of Pfizer Inc.'s nirmatrelvir and 1.6 million doses of Merck & Co.'s molnupiravir procured by the government, about 1.75 million doses of nirmatrelvir and some 780,000 doses of molnupiravir were disposed of, according to the ministry. The government also secured two million doses of Shionogi & Co.'s ensitrelvir but about 1.77 million of them are unused, the ministry said.
