He warned that the Muslim population would soon become the majority in the state and said the current situation is such that the state government should just listen to Kanthapuram and govern.

Kerala govt to meet school managements over revised timings
Agency: PTI Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 20 (PTI) The Kerala General Education Department on Sunday said it would hold discussions with representatives of school managements in the state regarding the change in school timings. The discussion will be held in the chamber of General Education Minister V Sivankutty on July 23 afternoon, an official statement said. One representative from each management is expected to participate in the meeting, during which the minister will explain the circumstances that prompted the government to revise school timings, it added. Sivankutty recently clarified that school timings cannot be changed to 'accommodate a particular community", as the government must consider the interests of lakhs of students. He stated that the decision to extend school hours by 30 minutes was based on the directions of the Kerala High Court, and anyone aggrieved by it can seek legal remedies. As per the revised schedule, high school students (classes 8 to 10) will spend an additional 15 minutes each in the morning and afternoon on all working days—except Fridays—to help schools meet the mandated 1,100 instructional hours annually. The minister's clarification comes in the wake of mounting criticism from Muslim organisations, including the Sunni clerical body Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama, which contends that the 'extended hours will interfere with religious education." Sivankutty had said the decision was based on a Kerala High Court ruling in August 2024, which deemed the earlier academic calendar—featuring 25 working Saturdays—"invalid" due to the absence of official government sanction. CPI(M) hits out at SNDP leader for remarks against minorities
Agency: PTI Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 20 (PTI) The ruling CPI(M) in Kerala urged people to remain vigilant against any attempts—by anyone—to 'undermine" the state's secular fabric. Without naming Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan, who had launched a scathing attack on minority communities for allegedly 'grabbing the opportunities meant for backward classes", a CPI(M) state secretariat statement said the Left Front government was committed to addressing the grievances of all sections of society. 'Social justice and secularism are the foundation of the government's policy," the statement added. Natesan's speeches—at Kottayam on Saturday and Kochi on Sunday—have drawn widespread criticism from various political parties. Speaking at a felicitation event in Kochi to mark his 30 years as SNDP general secretary, Natesan said he would continue to speak about social justice and 'the neglect of the backward Ezhava community", despite opposition from minority leaders. State Cooperation Minister V N Vasavan, who inaugurated the event, praised Natesan for his 'historic achievements" during his tenure. 'Only in a secular society can people of all faiths—and those with none—function democratically," it added. The LDF government's welfare programmes aim to address the challenges faced by the poorer sections across all communities, it further said. The Communist Party has drawn inspiration from Kerala's renaissance movements and has worked to ensure social justice, the statement added. The SNDP, founded by Sree Narayana Guru, upheld the principle that the essence of all religions is the same. 'The organisation should move forward in a manner that protects secularism. Anyone can raise the issues of a particular community, but not in a way that incites religious animosity," the statement stressed. Earlier in the day, Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan also strongly criticised Natesan's remarks, stating that any attempt to divide society must be opposed. Speaking in Kochi, Satheesan said Natesan's comments 'went against the very ideals upheld" by SNDP founder Sree Narayana Guru. 'Community leaders should avoid statements that create divisions among people," he claimed. Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) national general secretary P K Kunhalikutty also condemned Natesan's 'unwarranted" remarks against minorities. He urged the state government to examine Natesan's statements and take appropriate action. Task force formed to find out illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in Tripura: CM
Agartala, Jul 20 (PTI) Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Sunday said his government has constituted a special task force to find out illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in the northeastern state. His comment comes a day after Tipra Motha Party (TMP) supremo Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma revealed the formation of a special task force by the West Tripura district police to 'detect and deport' the illegal immigrants staying in the state, to their country of origin. 'The Centre has already decided to accept those people from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan who have taken refuge in India before 2014 due to religious persecution, he told the reporters. He was referring to the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, which paves the way for granting Indian nationality to undocumented non-Muslim migrants — Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis and Christians — from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, who came to India before December 31, 2014. 'There are attempts to create confusion on the issue. We have already constituted a special task force to identify if there is any influx or infiltration after December 2014. We will not accept those who came after December 2014 as per the Centre's decision and have been staying here illegally," he said. Notably, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has invited a delegation of the Tipra Motha Party (TMP) for a meeting on July 23 to discuss the concerns raised by it about the possible enrolment of illegal immigrants in Tripura's electoral rolls. Debbarma, in a social media post on Saturday, said, 'After we raised our concerns about possible enrolment of illegal immigrants in Tripura's voter roll and demanded a Bihar-like Special Intensive Revision (SIR), the Election Commission of India has called us for a meeting on July 23 to discuss these issues."
