Fedora Prize 2025: Irish composer Michael Gallen wins €100,000 award for new opera
Michael Gallen
, has won the €100,000 Fedora Prize, the world's largest award for new opera.
The biannual prize, which was presented at Vienna State Opera on Saturday, was awarded by a jury that included the directors of the Paris Opera, Dutch National Opera, Danish National Theatre and Aix-en-Provence Festival.

is a European circle of philanthropists who support opera and ballet.
In presenting the award to Gallen, to the American choreographer Shawn Fitzgerald Ahern – who also directed the work with Gallen – and to the producer

, the president of Fedora, Stéphane Argyropoulos, said that The Curing Line 'redefines the operatic genre by fusing tradition with multimedia innovation'.
The opera, which draws on research into the Irish tradition of 'making cures', tells the story of a woman who loses the capacity to use her life-saving ancestral healing power. It asks whether, in regarding the human and the environment as separate, we are failing to acknowledge that fundamental parts of ourselves and our culture are becoming extinct.

The Swedish mezzo-soprano Birgitta Svendén, who chaired the jury, said, 'Here and now, the world is experiencing a turbulent and rather chaotic time. The theme for The Curing Line is more relevant than ever. What can we do as individuals, as communities, what can we learn from history and inherited traditions, how can we acknowledge the change we have to go through without losing hope for the future generations?
'The Curing Line will address many of the questions that we as human beings are faced with and do not have the answers for. This project is deeply immersive and multisensorial, which gives the possibility to expand the boundaries of opera. The narrative, the musical language and the staging will resonate to the audience of tomorrow.'

'In recent years we have been honoured to support his work in many ways, and we are delighted that this award will bring an even wider audience to his ground-breaking work. Opera in Ireland is going through a very exciting period as exemplified by Michael's visionary work.'
Gallen, who was born in Monaghan and now lives in Co Mayo with his wife and son, wrote the libretto for The Curing Line, which is in Irish and English, with the poet
Annemarie Ní Churreáin
. The opera is produced by Straymaker in association with
Kilkenny Arts Festival
, the Irish Cultural Centre in Paris, Miroirs Étendus, Once Off Productions and Copenhagen Opera Festival.
Its development has been supported by the Arts Council and Creative Monaghan, and the premiere is planned for Kilkenny Arts Festival in August 2026.
Gallen's other recent commissions include new work for Radio France, the National Orchestra of Brittany, the Irish National Symphony Orchestra and Ulster Orchestra. A new album of his songs, Sudden Wells, is due for release in 2026.

Kicking off on Friday with the debut of a new art exhibition at the Kunstverein, and music from The Rebel Souls and Bruiser on a marquee stage next to Aughrim's iconic monument, children danced and played chase on Main Street, while parents (and grandparents) came out in droves to soak up the summer heat and festivities, which were set to a soundtrack of reggae, rock and trad by talent from across the Garden County. The festival reached fever pitch on Saturday, with a full day of events being held at the Aughrim Pavilion, where gold panning, a sensory tent, and some explosive science experiments were part of the children's entertainment. Musicians such as Settle the Scór and Dogpond played to much fanfare from the audience, while a dramatic Irish mythology performance from CandleLit Tales had Aughrim enraptured. Following two days of good weather and great attendance, with some visitors coming from as far as Drogheda, festival director Barry Reid and musical director Tristan McCall brought this years festival – which seems set to become a mainstay of the Wicklow summer calendar – to a close, thanking attendees and reminding them: 'Same time, same place next year!'.

The podcaster reveals she met him for the face-to-face conversation over a dinner of halloumi burgers and chicken wings, before the November election. The broadcaster, who is this week's guest on the Under the Grill podcast, said: 'There was no coddle or any of this sort of stuff, even though you think he's such a traditional Dub, don't you? 'I'd say he has better taste than you and I. He's floating around the Mediterranean and he has probably eaten very nicely. He ordered a haloumi burger, and I, embarrassingly, had chicken wings. What an amateur I am. 'He is sophisticated enough – he like his Eggs Benedict. 'I did meet him in town over the course of the general election and he had an old-fashioned Irish breakfast at lunchtime.' Hutch walked free from the Special Criminal Court in 2023 after the State unsuccessfully sought to prosecute him for his involvement in a gun attack at the Regency Hotel in 2016. He is currently under investigation by authorities in Spain for alleged money laundering. He narrowly missed out on securing a Dáil seat in last year's general election. Ms Tallant said: 'He is quite distinguished looking: he's unusual looking and he had kind of shaved his beard, and he has those sharky eyes. 'The day he came out of prison, he had the full beard and looked like something from Castaway. ADVERTISEMENT 'It just added to the whole drama of everything when he walked free that day. He has differing styles and I don't think he has worn the beard since then. But he's an interesting character. 'The Monk interview was a mega success with our listeners. There are comedy sketches about him now. 'His voice is so funny. He shocks you in a funny way when he speaks. He does have a star quality: for a criminal, he does have some charisma. 'The Monk interview is the biggest that was ever broadcast in Ireland. If you look at the figures properly, they're up there with the Joe Rogan [podcast]. 'It's off the scale. On YouTube alone, before we hit the audio figures, there's about 1.4 million. You can double that for listeners.' Ms Tallant joined Kevin Dundon and Caoimhe Young in the Under the Grill kitchen to chat about her dad's roast chicken dinner.
