Martin Scorsese Got One of Pope Francis' Final Interviews
The film, 'Aldeas — A New Story,' is about the worldwide cultural project developed by Scholas Occurrentes, a global educational movement founded by Francis in 2013, the same year he was elected pope. Communities around the world will create scripts for short films that highlight their identities, histories and values.
Snippets of the conversation between the pope and Scorsese will be interwoven into the film, which does not have a release date.
In a statement on Wednesday, Scorsese said it was important to Francis for 'people across the globe to exchange ideas with respect while also preserving their cultural identity, and cinema is the best medium to do that.' Before the pope's death, Francis called 'Aldeas' a poetic project because it 'goes to the roots of what human life is.'
The project punctuates a long relationship between the pope and Scorsese, whose work has sometimes been religious in nature. When 'The Last Temptation of Christ' was released in 1988, it drew protests and outrage from religious groups.
In 2016, Scorsese met with Francis to discuss his movie 'Silence,' a drama about a Portuguese Jesuit priest who heads to 17th-century Japan, where Christians are persecuted. They met again in 2023, when Scorsese announced he would make another film about Jesus. The director's most recent project, 'Martin Scorsese Presents: The Saints,' dramatizes the lives of eight Catholic saints.
When Francis died, Scorsese said in a statement to Variety that he was lucky to have known him and that his loss for the world was immense.
'He had an ironclad commitment to the good,' Scorsese said. 'He knew in his soul that ignorance was a terrible plague on humanity. So he never stopped learning. And he never stopped enlightening.'

Tyler, The Creator Dropping New Album on Monday: Everything We Know
Just days after teasing a new project on social media, Tyler, The Creator has announced he's dropping a new album on Monday (July 21). During his concert at Brooklyn's Barclays Center on Friday (July 18), the 34-year-old rapper and producer shouted to the crowd what appears to be the title of his ninth album, Don't Tap the Glass, according to Variety. Outside the venue, fans spotted an art installation featuring a muscular figure enclosed in a clear box — seemingly a nod to the upcoming album's cover art. More from Billboard Doechii & Tyler, the Creator Preview Pharrell-Produced 'Get Right' Collab During Louis Vuitton Paris Show Mariah Carey 'MC16' Album Details Coming Tomorrow Fans Choose BTS' 'Permission to Dance On Stage' Live Album as This Week's Favorite New Music In the days leading up to the show, Tyler hinted at a surprise set for July 21 by posting cryptic images on his Instagram, including a Louis Vuitton bag, a mannequin's head and a trumpet player in a band uniform. On Saturday (July 19) morning, he dropped a link to a website promoting the new album and featuring vinyl, T-shirts and hats branded with the album title. The website also displayed three color-coded boxes with cryptic messages: a blue box reading, 'Body movement. No sitting still'; a yellow one stating, 'Only speak in glory. Leave your baggage at home'; and a red box that read, 'Don't tap the glass.' Billboard has reached out to Tyler, The Creator's representatives for more details about the upcoming release. In late June, Tyler and Doechii previewed their Pharrell-produced track 'Get Right' during the Louis Vuitton SS26 show in Paris. The song marks their second collaboration, following 'Balloon' from Tyler's 2024 Billboard 200-topping album Chromakopia. It remains unclear whether 'Get Right' will be included on his new album. Don't Tap the Glass follows last year's Chromakopia, which spent three weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. The 14-track album featured guest appearances from Doechii, Lil Wayne, GloRilla, Sexyy Red, Daniel Caesar, and others. Tyler is currently touring North America in support of the album and will soon head to Australia, Japan, South Korea, Thailand and the Philippines. Mahershala Ali's ‘Blade' Is Still Happening: Kevin Feige Says Initial Project ‘Wasn't Insanely Great at the Time'
'Mahershala Ali is still attached,' Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed at a press event on July 18 (via Variety), bringing some clarity to the long-awaited new 'Blade' entry in the MCU. Just last month, while promoting 'Jurassic World Rebirth,' Ali was evasive while discussing the project. 'Leave me out of it,' Ali said when his 'Jurassic World' co-stars Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Bailey attempted to prod him on a Marvel-related trivia question. 'That's a Scarlett question.' In a separate interview with Variety at the 'Rebirth' premiere, he said. 'Call Marvel… I'm ready. Let them know I'm ready.' More from IndieWire Madelyn Cline Reveals 'Last Summer' Ending Was Shot One Month Before Release David Corenswet: Superman Character Has Been 'Over-Simplified' Onscreen Now, Feige says the project, originally set for release November 2025, says that Marvel simply got weighed down with projects due to the 'over-expansion' of the brand. With the increased demand for product, Feige explained, 'for the very first time ever, quantity trumped quality.' 'We had spent 12 years working on the Infinity Saga, saying, 'That's never going to happen to us.' We always had more characters that people were asking about than we could possibly make, because we weren't going to make a movie a month — that's crazy. Suddenly there's a mandate to make more, and we go, 'Well, we do have more' … But maybe that's what we fell into,' he lamented. Feige went on to explain that they didn't want to 'just put a leather outfit on [Ali] and have him start killing vampires.' Instead, Marvel Studios wanted something 'unique,' and Feige added of the initial scripts, 'It wasn't insanely great at the time.' So, despite Ali's casting announcement in 2019 and his brief voice cameo in 2021's 'Eternals,' the two-time Oscar-winning actor has yet to take on the role originated on film by Wesley Snipes. 'We didn't feel like, as we often do, you can have a good script and make it a great script through production. We didn't feel confident that we could do that on 'Blade,' and we didn't want to do that to Mahershala and didn't want to do that to us,' Feige concluded. The most significant update regarding 'Blade' this year actually made it seem like the project might be dead. Earlier this month, it was revealed that the movie 'Sinners' used period costumes that were originally procured by costume designer Ruth Carter for 'Blade.' Before he revealed the actual status of the production, Feige joked that this was the reason 'Blade' was on hold. 'The obstacle was, Ryan Coogler called and said, 'We'd love some costumes for 'Sinners,'' Feige joked. 'And we said, 'Take 'em man, no problem' — he's a good friend — 'take our costumes. We'll hold off on the movie.'' Ellen DeGeneres Says She Moved to the U.K. Because of Donald Trump: Life ‘Is Just Better' Here
Ellen DeGeneres says she decided to make the U.K. her permanent home because of Donald Trump's re-election as U.S. President. Making her first public appearance since leaving the U.S. last year, the chat show host revealed that she decided to settle in the U.K. with her wife Portia de Rossi the day after Trump won his second term in office in November 2024. 'We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis, and I was like, 'He got in',' she said in an on-stage conversation with U.K. host Ricard Bacon, according to the BBC. 'And we're like, 'We're staying here.'' But DeGeneres was full of praise for her new home, asserting that life 'is just better' in the U.K. compared to the U.S. 'It's absolutely beautiful,' she said. 'We're just not used to seeing this kind of beauty. The villages and the towns and the architecture — everything you see is charming and it's just a simpler way of life.' She added: 'It's clean. Everything here is just better — the way animals are treated, people are polite. I just love it here.' DeGeneres also discussed moves in the U.S. to endorse the reversal of a Supreme Court case that allows same-sex marriage, adding that she was considering getting married again in the U.K.. 'The Baptist Church in America is trying to reverse gay marriage,' she said. 'They're trying to literally stop it from happening in the future and possibly reverse it. Portia and I are already looking into it, and if they do that, we're going to get married here.' In the conversation with Bacon, DeGeneres addressed allegations of a toxic workplace culture on her talk show in the U.S. from former workers and being branded as 'mean' in some press circles. 'It's as simple as, I'm a direct person, and I'm very blunt, and I guess sometimes that means that… I'm mean?,' she said. 'I don't think I can say anything that's ever going to get rid of that [reputation] or dispel it, which is hurtful to me,' she added. 'I hate it. I hate that people think that I'm that because I know who I am and I know that I'm an empathetic, compassionate person.' But DeGeneres admitted that it was 'certainly an unpleasant way to end' her talk show.
