UK job market slowdown raises concerns for international students
United Kingdom
's rising unemployment rate and shrinking job market are making it increasingly difficult for international students to find work after graduation. According to the latest figures from the
Office for National Statistics
(ONS), unemployment rose to 4.6% between February and April 2025, the highest level since mid-2021.
More than 109,000 payroll jobs were lost in May alone, marking the sharpest monthly drop in five years. Employers are becoming more cautious due to rising operational costs and economic uncertainty. Job vacancies have declined for the 35th consecutive quarter, falling by 63,000 to a total of 736,000 open positions across the country.
These conditions are especially challenging for international students who plan to stay in the UK after completing their studies. Many rely on the
Graduate Route visa
, which offers up to two years to secure a job. However, with fewer opportunities and higher competition, securing a Skilled Worker visa—often required for long-term employment—has become harder.

In April 2025, employer contributions to National Insurance rose to 15% on salaries above £5,000, up from 13.8% on earnings over £9,100. The government also increased both the minimum wage and the national living wage. These changes have raised hiring costs, prompting businesses to reduce recruitment efforts. Even employers who previously supported international hiring are reconsidering due to financial pressure.
Live Events
Students aiming for careers in finance, technology, or media are finding it harder to access quality roles. ONS data also shows that wage growth, excluding bonuses, slowed to 5.2%—its lowest pace in seven months. For recent graduates, this means that entry-level salaries may no longer be enough to cover rising costs of living, particularly in major cities like London.
Some graduates are taking jobs below their skill levels to maintain their visa status. Others are uncertain about their career paths, as a slowdown in hiring could delay or derail plans to gain UK work experience and build global careers.

Although inflation has eased slightly to 3.4%, which could lead to interest rate cuts by the Bank of England, employers are still cautious. International students are being encouraged to explore alternative sectors, strengthen their skillsets, and engage with employers early.
The UK remains a popular destination for education, but for many international students in 2025, the path to post-study employment is becoming more difficult to navigate.

Quepem MLA Altone D'Costa said that the people of South Goa are waiting eagerly for mining to restart in a sustainable manner. 'Only 12 mining blocks have been made operational, and only three are in South Goa,' he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 20 Pieces of Clothing you should Ditch over 40 Learn More Undo D'Costa also sought to know how much of the loss in revenue due to illegal mining has been recovered by govt so far. Consumers owe Rs 350cr in dues, says power minister
Panaji: Dues amounting to Rs 350 crore are pending from power consumers in the state. Govt consumers are the biggest defaulters, with Rs 142.7 crore pending, followed by commercial consumers who owe govt Rs 122.8 crore, and domestic consumers who owe Rs 85.4 crore. The information was provided by power minister Ramkrishna 'Sudin' Dhavalikar in a written reply in the assembly. His reply stated that 6,551 consumers owe the department more than Rs 1 lakh in dues as of June 2025. These include around 3,000 public services consumers, which comprise govt departments. These also include 300 electricity department connections of its various offices. Another 1,525 defaulters are commercial consumers, 1,718 are domestic consumers, and 500-odd are industrial consumers. Of the total 6,551, 2,968 connections are active. When asked about the steps taken to recover amounts from major defaulters, Dhavalikar said a 15-day notice is served to the consumers to pay arrears, failing which the connection is temporarily disconnected. For consumers approaching the department with financial problems, the department provides an instalment plan to recover the payments in part, depending upon the past payments trend of the consumer, with applicable delay charges. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like EV chargers from £899 ScottishPower Learn More Undo Failing this, the connection is temporarily disconnected, he said. If the temporary disconnection lasts for six months, the department serves another notice to the defaulter, after which the connection is permanently disconnected if dues are not cleared. Finally, the matter is referred to the revenue recovery court. At a public hearing in May, conducted by the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC), to discuss the proposed power tariff hike, consumers appealed to the JERC to keep the tariff hike on hold until the department recovers dues from govt departments and other defaulters first.

HC rules in BMC favour in 2 pleas on waste tender
Mumbai: The Bombay High Court has ruled in favour of the BMC in two petitions filed against the modified tender conditions prescribed for collection and transportation of solid waste in its wards. Veer Infra, along with another petiioner, had moved the HC challenging modified tender conditions, of July 1, 2025, and sought direction for issuance of fresh tender notice by prescribing the eligibility criteria as stipulated in the earlier tender floated for the years 2018-2025. The tender was for the collection and transportation of municipal solid waste in its wards to transfer stations and final disposal sites for a period of seven years from 2025 to 2032. Both the petitioners had made representations complaining about stipulation of eligibility conditions in the tender notice. The petitioners said the July 1 modification amounts to wholesome modification of the tender conditions. That experience of door-to-door collection, storage, segregation, transportation and disposal of municipal solid waste for 7 years is impossible of being fulfilled by any contractor from Mumbai as similar tender of the requisite magnitude has never been floated during past seven years in Mumbai city. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Making history: These 5 timepieces set world records at Watches and Wonders Geneva 2025 CNA Read More Undo That the SLF Waste processing plants were installed in Mumbai only five years back, making it impossible for any bidder from Mumbai to fulfill the prescribed eligibility criteria. It was also argued that the modified marking system totaling 50 marks are reserved for subjective analysis, thereby leaving room for arbitrariness in selecting the favourite bidders by rejecting other eligible bidders. The high court said the civic body is the best judge it's requirement and has accordingly formulated the tender conditions. "This court cannot sit as an appellate authority over the wisdom of tendering authority in adopting methodology for evaluating bids." On the objection related to restriction put on Joint Venture bidders in bidding for more than one group, the HC said, "A bidder can bid to any numbers of groups, provided the bidder fulfills the criteria of the amount mentioned against the turnover and work experience individually for those groups."
