What to know about the Northwestern Wildcats in 2025

USA Today6 days ago
Though they were never in the same division, Penn State and Northwestern have faced off consistently since the Nittany Lions joined the Big Ten. First meeting in 1993 and playing as recently as 2023, the two have met 21 times with Penn State holding a 16-5 lead. Penn State will put its three-game winning streak on the line when it hosts the Wildcats in October, a game the Nittany Lions will be heavy favorites.
Here's a look at Northwestern as the 2025 season steadily approaches.
2024 in review
The Wildcats tumbled back below .500 last season, finishing with a dismal 4-8 record in David Braun's second year as head coach. They started the season 2-1, including a double-overtime loss to Duke, before struggling through conference play. Wins over Maryland and Purdue - the only Big Ten schools with a worse conference record than Northwestern - were the highlights of the season, while every conference loss came by 10-plus points. The defense was particularly poor, with Iowa dropping a 40-bomb and Michigan recording a 50-piece on the Wildcats. The offense had its moments but also came out flat in several games, including single-digit point totals in four games.
Head coach profile
Braun took over as the interim coach after Pat Fitzgerald was fired prior to the 2023 season, rallying the Wildcats to an 8-5 record capped off by a Las Vegas Bowl win over Utah. All the momentum vanished as Northwestern plunged to 4-8 last season with two wins over power conference foes. Prior to taking over the program, Braun served as a coordinator in the FCS and Division II ranks, working his way up.
Top offensive player
Left tackle Caleb Tiernan was a bright spot on a struggling offense last season, earning an All-Big Ten honorable mention after coming on strong down the stretch. He's started 30 games over the last three seasons and returns for another year, making him an experienced veteran at a key position.
Top defensive player
Defensive end Aidan Hubbard returns for his fifth season at Northwestern after two consecutive years as an All-Big Ten honorable mention. Over the last two seasons, Hubbard has totaled 60 tackles while leading the team with six sacks each year. Entering his final season with the Wildcats, Hubbard is poised for a bigger role.
2025 schedule
Northwestern will make a trip from one of the smallest college football stadiums to one of the largest, visiting Beaver Stadium in October. The Wildcats have only won in State College twice, 14-7 in 2004 and 29-6 in 2014. Given the recent trajectories of both programs, Penn State will be favored by multiple scores and will hope to avoid a major upset sandwiched between road games to UCLA and Iowa. For Northwestern, it'll be the toughest road game of the season but comes between home games against UL Monroe and Purdue.

Notre Dame OT commit Grayson McKeogh makes a huge jump in Rivals 2026 rankings

🚨NEW🚨 Notre Dame OT commit Grayson McKeogh ranks No. 13 and 4-stars in the initial 2026 Rivals300☘️ If you haven't noticed, Notre Dame football does not recruit off of rankings, and it has paid off big time with the commitment of Pennsylvania offensive tackle Grayson McKeogh. The 6-foot, 7-inch and 275-pound tackle picked the Irish over offers from Penn State, Alabama and others was given a huge boost in Rivals updated 2026 rankings. McKeogh rose from No. 181 all the way to No. 13 overall, making him a high 4-star prospect. He's on the cusp of getting his 5th-star as well, and that could happen with an impressive senior season. While it's exciting to see McKeogh make such a big jump, it just solidifies that Notre Dame made the right decision going hard after him. There aren't many schools across the country that do as good of a job as the Irish do identifying elite offensive line talent, as there have been many that were not as highly ranked making immediate impacts. A few names quickly jump off the page such as Joe Alt and Anthonie Knapp, great examples of impeccable scouting and disregard for recruiting rankings. Notre Dame has another elite offensive tackle heading to the program with the addition of McKeogh.

Prep Rally: Top Southern California high school running backs to watch this season

Hi, and welcome to another edition of Prep Rally. My name is Eric Sondheimer. Let's take a sneak peek at running backs to watch this fall. As much as everyone likes to pass these days in football, the running backs are the ones that can lead to victory or defeat. If you can't run, you probably won't win on a night the line can't protect the quarterback. The City Section has two running backs coming off fantastic sophomore seasons in Edward Rivera of South East and Ceasar Reyes of Garfield. Both have been working hard this summer to improve their speed and strength. Reyes could benefit from a new all-weather field opening at Garfield. Journee Tonga of Leuzinger is the little engine that could. He rushed for more than 2,000 yards and 29 touchdowns as a 5-foot-8 junior. Brian Bonner of Valencia and Deshonne Redeaux of Oaks Christian are speedsters committed to Washington and USC, respectively, and capable of breaking away for touchdowns if defenses give them any kind of openings. AJ McBean of Mira Costa is a 205-pound bruising junior running back with improving speed and power. Maliq Allen of St. John Bosco showed moments of brilliance as a sophomore and gained 1,003 yards rushing. Jaxsen Stokes of Sierra Canyon showed he was a big-play weapon in the making as a sophomore. Justin Lewis has taken his talents from Thousand Oaks to Mater Dei, so let's see how the transition goes. Sean Morris, a Northwestern commit, has left Loyola for Orange Lutheran. Noah Penunuri of Rio Hondo Prep had 1,965 yards rushing. Zander Lewis has moved from Ontario Christian to Corona Centennial, joining leading rusher Braylin Drake and super sophomore Malaki Davis. Jorden Wells moves from the freshman team to varsity at Servite. His speed could make immediate impact. Kevika Martinez of La Habra is coming off a sophomore season in which he gained 1,021 yards and scored 16 touchdowns. There are other transfers that must fill out paperwork to decide whether they will be eligible immediately or have to sit out the first part of the season. The summer passing season ended Saturday with Mission Viejo once again being best behind quarterback Luke Fahey. The Diablos went 7-0 in the Edison seven-on-seven tournament. Here's a report. Santa Margarita, under first-year coach Carson Palmer, made its first appearance and there's lots to like about what the Eagles will have available this fall, from an all-star coaching staff, to the Mosley brothers, Trent and Grant, to new quarterback Trace Johnson. The season opener matching Mission Viejo against Santa Margarita on Aug. 22 is shaping up as the best opening football game this fall. Hamilton is planning for big improvement after a 2-9 rookie season for coach Elijah Asante and has a freshman quarterback, Thaddeus Breaux, who Asante is calling 'The Franchise.' Here's the report. The City Section wants its perpetual football trophy back from Narbonne, which has to vacate its 2024 title for rules violations. Unfortunately, the trophy is apparently missing again. This is a repeat from when Narbonne had the trophy in 2018 and it went missing until being found in a dumpster in 2021. Here's the report. Several of Southern California's best girls' flag football players will be competing this weekend at the NFL Flag Championships beginning Thursday in Canton, Ohio. They're playing for an all-star club team representing the Chargers from Southern California, the Conquer Chargers. Madi Lam, who will be a senior at Santa Margarita, is the team's talented quarterback. Also on the team is Hayli McIlroy from Crean Lutheran, a receiver and defensive back, and center Shelby Nguyen from Marina. Two recent graduates are key players — Sophie Guitron from Mira Costa and Aaya McLyn from Long Beach Poly. It was a big Sunday for Corona High baseball, becoming the first high school to have three first-round draft picks. Pitcher Seth Hernandez was taken No. 6 by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Shortstop Billy Carlson was selected No. 10 by the Chicago White Sox. Third baseman Brady Ebel went No. 32 to the Milwaukee Brewers. Here's a report. Kevin Smith, the former baseball coach at South Hills and Mt. San Antonio College, is the new head coach at Los Altos. ... He no longer has a field after the school put temporary bungalows on the field for the next five years to help the campus recover from damage of the Palisades fire. ... Harvard-Westlake baseball coach Jared Halpert and athletic director Matt LaCour will be in Atlanta on Tuesday to watch former Wolverines Max Fried and Pete Crow-Armstrong in the MLB All-Star Game. Here's a report. . . . A double first base will be required beginning in 2027 for all high school baseball games. Here's the latest rules changes. ... Electronic communication by softball players have been clarified in new rules for the sport. Here's the report. ... Gary Meek, who was a Hall of Fame football coach at Esperanza, died on Thursday. He was 76. He was head coach for 17 years, won two section titles and was inducted into the Southern Section Hall of Fame in 2023. ... St. Bernard guard Joshua Palmer has committed to UC Irvine. His father is UCLA assistant Rod Palmer. ... Sierra Canyon's basketball program has added 6-foot-7 Brannon Martinsen from JSerra and 6-2 DeLan Grant from St. Francis. ... Jason Crowe Jr., the standout basketball player at Inglewood, is scheduled to announce his college choice on Friday. ... Jason Edgmond has resigned as girls basketball coach at Beckman. ... Eddie Arnett is the new athletic director at Ontario Christian. ... Redondo Union has an opening for softball coach. ... Mathis Dritz, one of the top girls basketball players in Ventura County last season at Westlake, has transferred to Fairmont Prep. ... Receiver Jonah Smith of Santa Margarita, a UCLA commit, will miss his senior season because of a knee injury. ... Cameron Chinn is the new baseball coach at Los Alamitos. He's a former Edison coach. ... It appears that Palisades' football team won't be able to use its home stadium this season. The team has scheduled three home games at Santa Monica College. Troy Williams, a two-time City Section player of the year from Narbonne in 2011 and 2012, is helping coach at El Camino College this summer with his former offensive coordinator, Tim Kaub. Williams plays quarterback for the Memphis Showboats of the United Football League. Here's a story from 2011 about Williams' potential. Here's a story from 2012 about Williams' continuing progress. 'It's a blessing.' Cincinnati HS football, baseball star Matt Ponatoski commits to Kentucky

The Fourth of July fireworks continued into Sunday night for the Ponatoski family. Shortly after Matt, a four-star quarterback and MaxPreps baseball All-American, committed to the University of Kentucky, his family lit off blue and white fireworks at their home in Hamilton. Advertisement He chose the Wildcats from a final four that included Alabama, Arkansas and Oregon. They made plans for the party at the last minute. Ponatoski expected that maybe 15 people would show up; the expansive front lawn was full of cars as around 100 of his friends and family members were on hand to watch him make his decision. Moeller's Matt Ponatoski speaks to his family and friends after verbally committing to the University of Kentucky. "It's a blessing. It's been four years of my life that I've done this recruiting process, so it's kind of a surreal moment because my family's been a big part of it for a really long time now and I don't know where I'd be without them," Ponatoski said. Advertisement He chose the Wildcats in part because of the proximity to home. Instead of hopping on a flight, they will only have to drive two hours to watch him play at the next level. On the football field, Moeller's Matt Ponatoski holds school records for career passing yards, career passing touchdowns and single-game passing touchdowns. Last fall, Ponatoski threw for 4,217 yards and 57 touchdowns, both single-season school records, to lead Moeller to its first Division I state championship game since 2013. For his career, he has 7,654 passing yards, 87 touchdowns and just 12 interceptions. He became the second player in school history to be named Ohio Mr. Football after Jordan Marshall won the award in 2023. He was also named the Gatorade Ohio Football Player of the Year. From June 17 to 19, Ponatoski attended the Elite 11 finals in Southern California. It is dubbed as the nation's premier quarterback camp series since 1999. He competed alongside Tennessee commit Faizon Brandon, Texas commit Dia Bell and Landon Duckworth, who is one of the top uncommitted prospects in the class of 2026. After being named the Pro Day MVP and performing well in the camp's 7-on-7 competition, he earned high praise from various scouting services. Advertisement How will Matt Ponatoski fit in with the University of Kentucky football program? Kentucky currently has five quarterbacks on its roster for this fall: graduate students Zach Calzada and Beau Allen, and freshmen Cutter Boley, Stone Saunders and Brennen Ward. In 2024, the Wildcats went 4-8, including a 1-7 mark in the Southeastern Conference. That snapped an eight-season bowl eligibility streak. They won four straight bowl games from 2018 to 2021. At Kroger Field, Ponatoski will look to mirror the success of another local quarterback, Highlands graduate Jared Lorenzen. He threw for 10,354 yards and 78 touchdowns before winning a Super Bowl with the New York Giants. When Ponatoski informed offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Bush Hamdan of his decision, he could tell the staff truly valued him. Advertisement "I don't know what he did on the other side of that phone, but it sounded super fun and I wanted to be a part of it. He was super excited, and he texted my family after. It was special for me because he told me it was one of the better days of his football career so far," Ponatoski said. Matt Ponatoski has been a key part of Moeller baseball's 54-7 record over the last two years. How would Matt Ponatoski fit into the UK baseball program? On the baseball diamond this spring, Ponatoski hit .440 with seven doubles, four home runs, 38 RBIs and 12 stolen bases as the Crusaders advanced to their third straight regional final. In two seasons, the sure-handed shortstop has a .415 batting average with a .518 on-base percentage and a .620 slugging percentage. Advertisement His father, Ryan, who played at Northern Kentucky University and was a middle infield coach for the Norse until 2009, aided Matt's baseball development. He stopped coaching when Becky was pregnant with Matt's younger sister, Kendall, an up-and-coming softball star at Badin. "He set the foundation, and it's been working for a really long time. He's been working with me, really, since I was born," Ponatoski said. At the end of the season, Ponatoski was named the Gatorade Ohio Baseball Player of the Year. He became just the third player in the award's history to win for two different sports in the same year, joining Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver Randy Moss and National Baseball Hall of Fame catcher Joe Mauer. On the diamond, the Wildcats are coming off a 31-26 season that saw them appear in the Clemson regional final in the NCAA tournament. Kentucky has made 10 NCAA tournament appearances in program history. Under ninth-year head coach Nick Mingione, the Wildcats advanced to their first super regional in 2017 and made their first College World Series appearance in 2023. Advertisement Did the Elite 11 competition influence Matt Ponatoski's college commitment decision? In late June, fellow four-star quarterbacks Jett Thomalla and Bryson Beaver committed to Alabama and Oregon, respectively. Ponatoski competed alongside both players at Elite 11, but said their decisions didn't impact his. "I had opportunities to commit then and I didn't, but I made the decision before Beaver went to Oregon. I was talking to people and the feeling was relief. I think that's the big thing for me, and that's how I knew it was the right thing," Ponatoski said.
