10 metro police and SAPS officers arrested in Edenvale to appear in court
10 metro police and SAPS officers arrested in Edenvale to appear in court Ten police officers from the SAPS and Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) are due to appear in the Germiston Magistrate's Court today, following their arrest yesterday at the Edenvale Police Station. Bedfordview and Edenvale News reports that the officers were taken into custody while on duty. According to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid), they face charges of corruption and theft. Ipid spokesperson Lizzy Suping says the arrests are linked to a multi-disciplinary law enforcement operation that took place on June 4 in Edenvale, initiated by the premier of Gauteng. During the operation, the officers allegedly raided a shop, confiscated cigarettes, and took R35 000 in cash along with three packs of headache tablets (Panados). The goods were estimated at R5 000. 'They arrested the cashier for trading in illicit cigarettes and the other employee for violating immigration rules,' Suping says. However, it is alleged that not all the confiscated items were recorded in the police occurrence book. The shop manager later disputed the quantity and type of goods that were logged. All the arrested officers are constables, except for one sergeant. They are currently detained at Germiston Police Station. National reports indicate that six of the arrested officers are from the EMPD, while the remaining four are SAPS members stationed at Tsakane Police Station. Malema declines nomination to chair ad hoc committee probing Mkhwanazi's claims
The EFF leader stated that he was unavailable. Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has declined his nomination to chair the newly established parliamentary ad hoc committee tasked with investigating serious allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. The committee held its first meeting on Tuesday to elect its chair and begin laying the groundwork for the investigation. The meeting followed the formal appointment of MPs selected to serve on the committee. The formation of the ad hoc committee comes after the National Assembly adopted a joint report from the Portfolio Committee on Police and the Portfolio Committee on Justice and Constitutional Development. ALSO READ: 'Same as Phala Phala' – Police committee member not optimistic about Mchunu investigations The report recommended that an independent body be established to probe Mkhwanazi's explosive claims. The two parliamentary committees have stipulated that the investigation should be completed within 90 days of the ad hoc committee's establishment. However, they noted that this timeframe could be amended or extended if needed. MPs also stressed the importance of ensuring the committee is adequately resourced, including access to external forensic and legal experts. Malema declines nomination to chair ad hoc committee During Tuesday's meeting, ANC chief whip Mdumiseni Ntuli nominated fellow ANC MP Molapi Soviet Lekganyane to serve as chair of the committee. Lekganyane accepted the nomination. Shortly after, MK Party MP David Mandla Skosana nominated Julius Malema for the position. However, the EFF leader declined the nomination. 'Thanks for the nomination [but] I am not available,' Malema responded. Lekganyane was subsequently elected unopposed. READ MORE: Julius Malema's message to KZN police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi The committee's work follows a widely publicised media briefing held last month by Mkhwanazi. Mkhwanazi made damning allegations against Police Minister Senzo Mchunu – who was placed on special leave by President Cyril Ramaphosa – and Deputy National Police Commissioner for Crime Detection, Shadrack Sibiya. Mkhwanazi accused the two of conspiring to dismantle the South African Police Service's (Saps) political killings task team, allegedly to shield individuals linked to politically connected crime syndicates, among other serious claims. Commission of inquiry Moreover, a judicial commission of inquiry has since been established to address Mkhwanazi's allegations and will be chaired by former acting deputy chief justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, The Madlanga commission will investigate claims of criminality, political interference and corruption within key institutions such as Saps, the National Prosecuting Authority and the State Security Agency, among others. It is also empowered to summon individuals for testimony, among other functions, according to the terms of reference published in the government gazette. The commission is expected to deliver a preliminary report in three months and a final report within six months of its formation. Sharpeville cops busted in ransom scandal
VEREENIGING – Following allegations involving the unlawful detention and extortion of a foreign national, two Sharpeville SAPS members, Constable Gift Mncedi Nteso (33) and Reservist/Constable Seipati Mofokeng (39), appeared in the Vereeniging Magistrate's Court. A senior SAPS official brought the matter to the attention of the Serious Corruption Investigation (SCI) unit in Vaal Rand. A Chinese national had allegedly been unlawfully detained by SAPS members, with a reported demand of R3 000 for his release. An investigation was immediately launched, and verbal 252A authorisation (entrapment) was secured from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions in Pretoria to monitor the transaction. Before the suspects could collect the full amount, information surfaced that R1 000 had already been paid, and the victim had been released without any formal record of arrest being filed at the police station. SCI members proceeded to Sharpeville SAPS, where two suspects were identified, questioned, and subsequently arrested after failing to provide any lawful justification for the arrest or release of the complainant. Both suspects face charges of kidnapping, corruption, and defeating the ends of justice. The Vereeniging Magistrate's Court granted the duo R1 000 bail each. The accused are expected to appear in court again on September 1.
