First look at the world's largest Legoland resort built with 85 million bricks
A colossal Lego figure, named Dada, greeted visitors to the newly opened Legoland resort in Shanghai. Dada, who stands at over 26 metres (85 feet) tall, is a fittingly huge welcome to the resort - which is the biggest Legoland in the world. Opening its doors on Saturday, the Shanghai resort marks China's inaugural Legoland. It is constructed from an astonishing 85 million Lego bricks. Its development was a collaborative effort between Merlin Entertainments, the LEGO Group, and the Shanghai government. Among the main attractions in the resort is Miniland, which replicates well-known sights from across the world using Lego bricks. It features sights from across China like Beijing's Temple of Heaven and Shanghai's the Bund waterfront. There's also a boat tour through a historical Chinese water town built with Lego bricks. On opening weekend, visitors were greeted by performances featuring Legoland characters. Tickets range from $44 (319 yuan) to $84 (599 yuan). Earlier this year in the UK, Fiona Eastwood was appointed the new boss of Merlin Entertainments, the company behind Legoland. She took on the job ahead of a number of key launches, including the Shanghai resort and a standalone Peppa Pig theme park in the US. Ms Eastwood said it was 'an honour' to take on the job. 'My task, as chief executive, is to lead Merlin to new heights, with a focus on performance, creativity, operational excellence and guest experience,' she said. Last year, a number of British Olympians and Paralympians were reimagined in brick form at Legoland to wish them good luck ahead of Paris 2024. Three model makers used 2,024 Lego bricks over 60 hours to create the exhibit, entitled Going for Gold. The creation included wheelchair racer Hannah Cockroft with the Arc de Triomphe and the Eiffel Tower, heptathlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson holding a javelin outside the Louvre and Tom Daley knitting on a diving board.

Hell Yeah, ‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners II' is Happening
After repeated teases over the past year, Studio Trigger revealed it's making a sequel to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, its hit 2022 anime based on Cyberpunk 2077. At the show's AnimeExpo panel on Friday, returning showrunner Bartoz Sztybor and season one voice actors Zac Aguilar (David Martinez) and Emi Lo (Lucy Kushinada) revealed the new season with a tantalizing poster made by Trigger character designer Ichigo Kanno. The new series is said to be standalone—sorry, season one fans, Sztybor and the trailer itself very much confirm original Edgerunners protagonist David is still dead—and will provide 'a raw chronicle of redemption and revenge' across its 10-episode run. The logline for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners II asks, 'When the world is blinded by spectacle, what extremes do you have to go to make your story matter?' The original centered on David's transformation into an Edgerunner after surviving a drive-by shooting and gets a powerful spinal implant. Along with critical acclaim for its writing and animation, it's been remembered for its pretty brutal ending, which left David and nearly every other main character dead by the end of their adventure. But if you thought that was bad, Sztybor teased things would get even worse for this new set of characters. 'I just wanted to make the whole world sad,' he said during Friday's panel. 'When people are sad, I'm a bit happy. This new season will be, of course, sadder, but it will be also darker, more bloody, and more raw.' Edgerunners II will be directed by Kai Ikarashi, who helmed the original's sixth episode 'Girl on Fire' and previously worked on Delicious in Dungeon and Mob Psycho 100. No word on when Cyberpunk: Edgerunners II will arrive, but luckily, there's some stuff to tide you over. There's a manga prequel all about supporting character Rebecca, and the show's co-protagonist Lucy joins Guilty Gear Strive later this summer. And if you've been holding out for a Blu-Ray for season one, it's coming October 28, with pre-orders opening August 26. 💥Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is in production! 💥 It presents a new standalone 10-episode story from the world of Cyberpunk 2077— a raw chronicle of redemption and revenge. ❓When the world is blinded by spectacle, what extremes do you have to go to make your story matter? 👀… — Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (@edgerunners) July 4, 2025Want more io9 news? World's largest Legoland opens amidst Shanghai heatwave
STORY: :: The world's largest Legoland opens in Shanghai amidst a sweltering heatwave :: Shanghai, China :: July 5, 2025 :: The theme park has been built using over 85 million Lego bricks Shanghai's meteorological observatory issued on Saturday morning an "orange" high-temperature alert, the second-highest in China's weather alert system, behind red. Parts of the country's eastern and central provinces are bracing for temperatures over 104 Fahrenheit, due to an early summer heatwave. Despite the alert, entry tickets to the new Legoland resort were sold out as thousands queued in the heat to try out more than 75 rides, performances, and attractions spanning over 300,000 square meters. While most visitors were upbeat, one complained to Reuters that the long queues outside to enter the venue were poorly organized. Staff handed out bottles of water to visitors while one visitor received medical attention due to the heat. Legoland Shanghai is operated by a joint venture between Merlin Entertainments, which runs Legoland parks around the world, and the Shanghai Jinshan District local government.
