How to compare prices to get the best deal
JUST because something is on offer, or is part of a sale, it doesn't mean it's always a good deal.
There are plenty of comparison websites out there that'll check prices for you - so don't be left paying more than you have to.
Most of them work by comparing the prices across hundreds of retailers.
Here are some that we recommend: Google Shopping is a tool that lets users search for and compare prices for products across the web. Simply type in keywords, or a product number, to bring up search results. Price Spy logs the history of how much something costs from over 3,000 different retailers, including Argos, Amazon, eBay and the supermarkets. Once you select an individual product you can quickly compare which stores have the best price and which have it in stock. Idealo is another website that lets you compare prices between retailers. All shoppers need to do is search for the item they need and the website will rank them from the cheapest to the most expensive one. CamelCamelCamel only works on goods being sold on Amazon. To use it, type in the URL of the product you want to check the price of.
Save on furniture at Dunelm
Dunelm often has sales and promotions offering up to 75% off, especially at certain times of the year.
It's worth keeping an eye out for Black Friday and Boxing Day sales to bag a bargain.
You can also check the clearance page on the Dunelm website to find the latest discounts.
Other money-saving websites, such as cashback sites like TopCashback and Quidco, may also help you save by allowing you to earn money back on your spending.
Plus you can save by opting for free click-and-collect to avoid being hit with delivery fees.

Thrifty mother-of-five who wrote 'Feed your family for £20 a week' cookbook reveals how much her recipes cost to make NOW thanks to soaring inflation

A Scottish mother-of-five who wrote a best-selling book six years ago on how to feed her family for just £20-a-week says soaring food prices means it would now cost almost double to do the same recipes. Lorna Cooper, 48, from Paisley, Renfreshire, who has three children of her own and is step-mother to two, wrote the cookbook, 'Feed your family for £20-a-week', after sharing her tips on Facebook and winning more than half a million followers. However, with inflation defying predictions again to rise to 3.6 per cent, the thrifty mother says food and drink prices have soared so much that her original £20 weekly shop budget could now only be used in 'an emergency situation'. The headline CPI rate had been expected to stay on hold at 3.4 per cent in the year to June, but instead skipped up to 3.6 per cent. The increase heaps woe on the Chancellor Rachel Reeves as she struggles to balance the books and get the economy going, casting doubt on the prospects for the Bank of England cutting interest rates quickly. Speaking to Radio 5 Live breakfast, family cook Cooper said increased prices 'across the board' in supermarkets meant the dishes she once cooked were now nearer to £35 to £40-a-week. The Scot originally created the Facebook page after struggling to meet her brood's £100-a-week food bill after a back injury left her unable to work in 2014. Failing to qualify for sick pay, she was forced to tighten the purse strings, and through savvy shopping, buying in bulk and batch cooking, she managed to slash her food bill to just £20 a week. On her original list were a combination of fresh, freezer and store cupboard foods. However, now she says the same food to make the same dishes that she created six years prior have shot up by 71% in that time. She told 5 Live presenter Rick Edwards: 'Every time you go into a shop, you pick something up and it's ten pence more than it was the week before.' She said eight weeks' worth of shopping that would once have cost £160 would now be priced at £272.38. The food blogger explained: 'Instead of £19.96 a week, it's now £34.05 - it's a big jump.' She said she calculates the price of her menus list every six months and in January this year it was recorded at £30.90, going up by more than 10 per cent since. 'I made an emergency shopping list last year that came in at £21.50 [a week] but it's such a basic list that it's not sustainable. 'It's literally for an emergency - it will do you for a couple of weeks but it's not a sustainable healthy menu or meal plan for a family at all.' Lorna's tips for feeding your family on a budget 1. Go shopping at the end of the day 2. Cook in bulk 3. Be adaptable - use ingredients reduced or on special offer 4. Shop in less obvious places - don't rely just on major supermarkets 5. Buy super-size for bigger discounts 6. Use your leftovers 7. Stop buying treats and make your own 8. Don't be scared to substitute 9. Stop throwing food out 10. Grow your own food Cooper added: 'There's so many tips I could give - but you're not feeding your family for £20 these days. 'People used to need help to get through a tough spot - the odd month - increasingly now it's every month.' The inflation increase heaps woe on the Chancellor as she struggles to balance the books and get the economy going, casting doubt on the prospects for the Bank of England cutting interest rates quickly. Fuel was the biggest contributor, while food prices were rising at the fastest pace since February last year. Worryingly for the Treasury, closely-watched CPI core inflation - excluding energy, food, alcohol, and tobacco - was up from 3.5 per cent to 3.7 per cent. Ms Reeves did not directly address the increase in a statement, saying she 'knows working people are still struggling with the cost of living ' and is determined to 'put more money into people's pockets'. ONS Acting Chief Economist Richard Heys said: 'Inflation ticked up in June driven mainly by motor fuel prices which fell only slightly, compared with a much larger decrease at this time last year. 'Food price inflation has increased for the third consecutive month to its highest annual rate since February of last year. 'However, it remains well below the peak seen in early 2023.' Ms Reeves said: 'I know working people are still struggling with the cost of living. 'That is why we have already taken action by increasing the national minimum wage for three million workers, rolling out free breakfast clubs in every primary school and extending the £3 bus far cap. 'But there is more to do and I'm determined we deliver on our Plan for Change to put more money into people's pockets.' Shadow chancellor Mel Stride said: 'This morning's news that inflation remains well above the 2 per cent target is deeply worrying for families.

Cash-strapped families can get support via the government's Household Support Fund. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Families can apply for support through the government's household support Credit: Alamy The scheme has been extended multiple times, with the latest round running between April 2025 and March 2026. Each council in England has been allocated a share of the £742million, which they can dole out to residents in need. Eligibility criteria varies, but help is usually offered to those on benefits or a low income. Residents in Worcestershire can apply for support worth up to £500 to help with water and energy costs. How much you receive depends on factors such as your age and if you live in a household with children. For example, households with just adults aged between 18-66 can receive up to £300 in support. This is also the case for households with one adult or a couple of pensionable age. But homes with children aged under the age of 18, or young adults up to the age of 21 in full time education, can receive up to £500. To be eligible for the support you must have an income before tax of £24,570 if you are a single adult. All other households must have a yearly income of £31,000. Families can get FREE washing machines, fridges and kids' beds or £200 payments this summer – and you can apply now You must also have no savings, unless you are of state pension age - in which case you can have up to £5,000. You can be on Universal Credit but at least one person in your household must meet one of the following: Be of state pension age Have a long-term diagnosed health condition or be registered disabled Have a child under four Be in receipt of DWP benefits like Attendance Allowance, Carer's Allowance, PIP or Disability Living Allowance Be receiving support from services such as food banks, Citizens Advice, Age UK, mental health or housing support, or your GP's social prescribing team If you are keen to apply visit What if I don't live in Worcestershire? The £742million Household Support Fund has been shared between all councils in England. So, if you don't live in this area but are struggling financially or are on benefits you will likely be eligible for help. This is because the fund was originally set up to help those on low incomes or classed as vulnerable. What type of help you can get will vary but it could range from a free cash payment to supermarket vouchers. For example, households in Ealing Council can apply for support worth £180. Elsewhere, Doncaster residents can still apply for £300 worth of support to be paid this winter. Households in Redcar & Cleveland can also now apply for support worth up to £230.

English beach resort town is getting direct train line to UK's capital again in ‘huge victory'

The restored service is expected to be a big boost for commuters ON TRACK English beach resort town is getting direct train line to UK's capital again in 'huge victory' Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A RAIL service between a popular beach resort town and London is being brought back this year. Govia Thameslink Railway halted its direct train link between the coastal town and the capital during the Covid pandemic. A direct service will run in the morning and return to the seaside town in the evening. It will run from Monday to Thursday, and the operator said it would make commutes to London "much easier". Prior to this, Eastbourne only had direct trains to London Victoria. A 'HUGE VICTORY' The news comes following calls from passengers to reinstate the transport link. The town's MP Josh Babarinde was part of the campaign to restore the service. He previously took a giant ticket-shaped petition to the town's train station while campaigning. The MP called the link's restoration a "huge victory" that would have a "positive impact" on the town. He said: "After months of campaigning including writing to rail bosses, pressing Ministers in the House of Commons, and gathering thousands of signatures from Eastbournians, I'm delighted that we've managed to restore our direct London Bridge rail service." "I look forward to seeing commuters on 15 December for the first journey up to London Bridge," he added. Picturesque English town is getting new £27m train line for first time in 60 years – & will cut journey times by an hour RESTORED SERVICE The operator has said the Covid pandemic had a "devastating impact" on the rail industry. Jenny Saunders, Thameslink customer services director, said: "The pandemic had a devastating impact on everyone, not least the rail industry, and our weekday commuter numbers are still reduced but recovering. "We're doing everything we can to encourage people back to rail, which is the most sustainable form of public transport. "The innovative new timetable we introduced along the east coastway two years ago did just that, boosting passenger numbers by giving people better services and easier connections. "We think this timetable improvement will build on that success and are pleased to have worked with local stakeholders to make the case for its introduction." The restored service will depart Eastbourne at 6:48am and arrive at London Bridge for 8:25am. In the evening, it will start back from the capital at 5.03pm and reach Eastbourne for 6.34pm.
