Black front pages, valley shutdown as Kashmir protests Pahalgam attack

Several newspapers across Kashmir on Wednesday printed their front pages entirely black as a gesture of mourning and protest against the brutal terrorist attack that claimed 26 lives in Pahalgam a day earlier. This is also the first time in 35 years that the Kashmir Valley saw a complete shutdown in protest of the Pahalgam terror attack.
Kashmiri newspapers print black pages
Leading English and Urdu dailies such as Greater Kashmir, Rising Kashmir, Kashmir Uzma, Aftab, and Taimeel Irshad set aside their usual formats in a symbolic act of solidarity with the victims, condemning the violence.
The papers were printed with white or red headlines against black backgrounds, reflecting the sorrow and outrage of the region. ALSO READ |
'Gruesome: Kashmir Gutted, Kashmiris Grieving', read the front page of Greater Kashmir, accompanied by a poignant subheadline in red: '26 killed in deadly terror attack in Pahalgam'. Its editorial titled 'The massacre in the meadow – Protect Kashmir's soul' described the incident as not only an assault on lives, but a strike at the very identity and values of the region, which are based in its hospitality, peace, and economy.
Shops, petrol stations, and other commercial establishments remained closed in Srinagar, except for those selling essentials. Public transport was limited, although private vehicles continued to operate. All private schools across Jammu and Kashmir were closed for the day, and Kashmir University postponed scheduled exams. Government schools, however, remained open.
Political parties, trade groups back shutdown
Several political parties and organisations backed the shutdown, including the National Conference (NC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peoples' Conference, and Apni Party. The Mutahida Majlis Ulema (MMU), led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, also called for a peaceful protest.
Tourism and trade associations such as the Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industries and Kashmir Traders and Manufacturers Federation voiced their outrage and stood in support of the bandh.
KTMF strongly condemns the tragic senseless incident at Pahalgam. Violence has no place in our society, peace and safety must prevail for all. We stand united in grief and pray for peace to prevail in the region. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.

‘Serial borrower from the IMF': India mocks Pakistan at UN; rebuts Islamabad's Kashmir, Indus Water Treaty claims

NEW DELHI: India on Tuesday stepped up its attack against Pakistan at the United Nations after Islamabad raised the Kashmir issue and the ongoing dispute over the Indus Waters. Marking the 80th anniversary of the UN, India's ambassador Parvathaneni Harish said that states violating the principle of "good neighbourliness" by fomenting cross-border terrorism "must bear a serious cost. " "There should also be a serious cost to states that violate the spirit of good neighbourliness and international relations by fomenting cross-border terrorism. Recently, consequent to the gruesome terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on 22 April 2025 that led to the killing of 26 innocent tourists, and based on the Council statement of 25 April—where members of the Security Council underlined the need to hold perpetrators, organizers, financiers, and sponsors of this reprehensible act of terrorism accountable and bring them to justice," Harish said. "India launched Operation Sindoor targeting terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, which was focused, measured, and non-escalatory in nature, aimed at achieving its primary objectives. A cessation of military activities was directly concluded at the request of Pakistan," he added. Harish drew a stark contrast between the two countries and accused Pakistan of being plagued by terrorism and economic instability. "I am constrained also to respond to the remarks made by the representative of Pakistan. The Indian subcontinent offers a stark contrast in terms of progress, prosperity, and development models. On the one hand, there is India—a mature democracy, a surging economy, and a pluralistic and inclusive society. At the other extreme is Pakistan—steeped in fanaticism and terrorism, and a serial borrower from the IMF," Harish said. "As we debate promoting international peace and security, it is essential to recognize that there are some fundamental principles which need to be universally respected. One of them is zero tolerance for terrorism. It ill behoves a member of the Council to offer homilies while indulging in practices that are unacceptable to the international community," he added. This came after Pakistan's deputy prime minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar raised the dispute between India and Pakistan over the Indus Waters Treaty, which New Delhi placed into abeyance after the Pahalgam terror attack in April. "Jammu and Kashmir remains one of the oldest disputes on the agenda of the UN Security Council. It is an internationally recognized disputed territory, the final disposition of which is to be made in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions and the wishes of the Kashmiri people. No cosmetic measures can serve as a substitute for the fundamental and inalienable right of self-determination of the Kashmiris, as guaranteed by the relevant Security Council resolutions," Ishaq Dar said. "A 65-year-old Indus Waters Treaty between India and Pakistan is a noteworthy example of dialogue and diplomacy working to peacefully arrive at a water-sharing arrangement between two neighbours. The treaty has withstood periods of trials and tribulations in bilateral relations. It is most unfortunate and regrettable that India has chosen to illegally and unilaterally hold this treaty in abeyance on baseless grounds, with the intention of withholding the flow of water to 240 million people of Pakistan, who rely on it for their livelihood and survival," he added.

IPS officer ordered to publish apology in newspapers, social media as SC finalises divorce

Settling a deeply contested marital dispute, the Supreme Court Tuesday granted divorce to a couple and directed that the wife, who is an IPS officer, to issue an 'an unconditional apology to the husband and his family' and have it published it newspapers and on social media as part of the settlement. The couple, an IPS officer and Delhi-based businessman, had married in 2015 and separated in 2018. The woman became an IPS officer in 2022, three years after she separated from her husband and moved to her hometown in Uttar Pradesh. According to the terms of the court-mandated settlement, the woman did not seek alimony or maintenance and instead offered to transfer property owned by her parents to her estranged husband. These properties — three pieces of land in Aligarh — will be transferred by the officer's mother who owns them through a gift deed. 'As a result of the cases filed by the wife, the husband remained in jail for a period of 109 days and his father for 103 days and the entire family suffered physical and mental trauma and harassment. What they have suffered cannot be resituated or compensated in any manner,' the top court said, directing the IPS officer, and her parents to tender an unconditional apology to the husband and his family members which shall be published in the national edition of the renowned one English and one Hindi newspaper. 'Such apology shall also be published and circulated on all social media platforms,' the SC said in its order. The apex court also granted primary custody of the child to the mother and visitation rights to the father. The SC further granted police protection to the husband and his family, cautioning the IPS officer to 'never use her position and power as an IPS officer or any other position that she may hold in future,' to cause 'any bodily or mental injury to the husband and his family, in any manner whatsoever.' A bench of Chief Justice of India BR Gavai and Justice Augustine George Masih also added that 'the apology is made to bring about amicable closure to the protracted legal battle and associated emotional and mental stress. It is without prejudice to/for either party. It shall not ever be used against (her),' the apex court said. Under Article 142 of the Constitution, which gives the SC power to do complete justice, the court directly grants divorce for irretrievable breakdown of marriage. The top court was hearing two transfer petitions filed by the couple. While the wife had filed cases in UP, the husband had filed cases in Delhi's Rohini court. Goel had sought divorce and did not seek either alimony or maintenance. The husband, in turn, had sought custody of their eight-year-old daughter. The marital dispute soon turned into a litany of cases against each other. While the wife alleged domestic violence, rape, and made income tax complaints, the husband alleged defamation and even challenged the IPS candidature of the wife.
