Italy fines Armani for 'misleading ethical' statements
luxury
goods giant
Giorgio Armani
3.5 million euros ($4 million) for misleading consumers over dangerous conditions for workers making its bags and accessories.
The watchdog sanctioned the Milan-based fashion group for "misleading ethical and social responsibility statements that were at odds with the actual working conditions found at suppliers and subcontractors".
"The companies made untruthful ethical and social responsibility statements that were not presented in a clear, specific, accurate, and unambiguous manner," it added in a statement.
It said Armani outsourced a "large part" of its leather bag and accessory production to suppliers who relied on subcontractors.
The watchdog cited cases in which "safety devices had been removed from the machinery to increase production capacity, thereby posing a serious risk to the safety and health of workers."
"Hygiene and sanitary conditions were inadequate, while workers were often employed totally or partially 'off the books'."
The watchdog judged that "respect for workers' rights and health did not correspond to the ethical and social responsibility statements" issued by the company.
It said the brand was aware of the situation "which seriously harmed the workers who produced Armani-branded leather bags and accessories".
The watchdog did not say where the workers were based.
Giorgio Armani slammed the ruling, expressing "disappointment and bitterness" in a statement.
It said it would appeal the decision and vowed that it has "always operated with the utmost fairness and transparency towards consumers".

‘Drone scare': Noida-based woman pleads withmob as she's beaten over theft charge in Bareilly
Bareilly: A 22-year-old Noida-based woman, who was on a visit to her boyfriend's house in Bareilly and seen talking on phone on the terrace in the middle of night, was tied to a pole and mercilessly thrashed by local residents who had mistaken her to be a "drone thief" -- someone presumed to use an unmanned aerial vehicle to recce an area before targeting houses for burglary or arson. The traumatised woman was later admitted to hospital with bruises and cuts, police said. Saturday morning's incident in Bareilly's Quila comes just hours after a 50-year-old mentally-ill man, believed to be a beggar, was lynched under similar suspicion in the district's Bhojipura area. SP (city) Manush Pareek said, "The woman -- originally from Nepal and currently living in Noida -- came here on the invitation of a local resident, Vinay Gangwar. Around 1:30am, she was talking on the phone on the roof of a single-storey unit when locals raised the alarm of a drone thief. In panic, she jumped off the roof, injuring her leg... A case was filed under sections 191-2 (rioting), 115-2 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 127-2 (wrongful confinement) of BNS, and four people have been arrested so far. " In a disturbing video later circulated online, the woman -- surrounded by some men -- is purportedly seen crying and pleading before them to let her go. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Resmed AirSense 11 with flat 20% off ResMed Buy Now Undo She could be heard saying that "she is from Nepal, works in Noida and has done nothing wrong". The traumatised woman also repeatedly begs the men to call police instead of manhandling her. The men could be seen dragging her by the hair. Taking cognisance of the video, Bareilly SSP, Anurag Arya, ordered an FIR against four men. Earlier on Friday night, residents of Udarnpur village in Bareilly's Hafizganj area caught a young man who was on his way to his in-laws' place, accusing him of being a thief. He was tied to a pole and thrashed, and then handed over to cops. An FIR was subsequently registered against seven named accused of which, five were arrested, police said. There has been rising paranoia around "drone-aided thefts" in several parts of UP. Villagers have been conducting night patrols armed with sticks, torches and even airguns in response to low-flying drone sightings. Many innocent people, mostly outsiders, have been targeted lately due to such rumours. Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Friendship Day wishes , messages and quotes !
