Google is tracking you right now — change these 3 settings to stop it
But convenience comes at a cost. Whether you're concerned about data privacy, targeted ads, or just want more control over your information, the good news is you can push back.
It only takes a few setting changes to limit what Google collects, what it remembers, and how it uses your activity. Here's how I adjusted my Google account to take back a little privacy.
Every search, every voice command, every tap in a Google-owned app is logged under your Web & App Activity.
It's the digital equivalent of someone reading over your shoulder — all day, every day. To turn this off, go to your Google account settings, then Data & privacy, and Web & App Activity. From there, hit Turn off, and choose whether to delete what's already been saved.
You'll also see the option to auto-delete future activity every 3, 18, or 36 months. That's worth enabling, too. If you want to dig deeper, you can delete data from specific apps like Maps or News, or even remove activity one item at a time.
Google's Timeline is a hyper-detailed log of where you've been — trips, errands, even your commute. If that makes you uneasy, it should. To manage this, open the Google Maps app on your phone, tap your profile icon, then select Your Timeline.
Tap the cloud icon to stop syncing location history across devices, then head into Location & privacy settings via the three-dot menu. Here, you can shut off Timeline, turn off location backups, and delete old entries entirely.
You can even set auto-delete for your location data at 3, 18, or 36 months.
Even if you're okay with some data collection, that doesn't mean you want it used to target you with ads. Google's ad platform uses your activity, YouTube history, and location to build a profile for advertisers.
To shut this down, go to your Google account, then Data & privacy and Ad settings. Then click into My Ad Center and switch off Personalized ads. For extra privacy, you can scroll down and click Partner ad settings, and disable the toggle.

Google Workspace is getting AI helpers called Gems. Here's how to use them.
Gems, Google's AI experts that can be customised to a specific task, are rolling out in Workspace. Available in the Gemini app, Gems will now also appear in a side panel in Google Docs, Sheets, Drive, Slides, and Gmail — the latest in a number of big AI updates in Workspace. Although the side panel will be populated with pre-made Gems (uncut, if you will), users can also create their own tailored AI helper. If you're not really sure why you'd need one of these things, Google has a few examples in its blog post: You may want to "leverage an 'assistant Gem' tailored to your job role to help provide more relevant summaries for you and content for internal communications," for instance, or you could "create a Gem that helps with sales interactions that is grounded on information for a specific company, prospect, or industry." How to use Gems Gems can be accessed in Workspace by clicking on the "Ask Gemini" spark button in the top right of a document. This opens up a panel which contains both pre-loaded Gems and the option to "Create a Gem" (Google has a separate help doc on how to do this). It's worth noting that you may not see Gems right away, though — the rollout started on Wednesday, but Google says it may be "potentially longer than 15 days for feature visibility". Google has been expanding Gemini in a bunch of ways recently, with the AI autogenerating email summaries in Gmail, integrating into your car, watch, and TV, and being added to Chrome. Google AI has also been struggling a bit with certain basic questions, mind you, so tread carefully.

Here's Why Some AI Startups Are Switching to Google Cloud from AWS (AMZN)
Alphabet's (GOOGL) Google Cloud is quickly becoming a serious competitor to Amazon's (AMZN) AWS in the race to support AI startups. One example, according to The Information, is The Browser Company, which was developing a new browser called Dia with advanced AI features. At first, the team considered using AWS, since it already powered other parts of Dia. However, after testing both options, The Browser Company found that Dia's AI tools ran faster and cost less on Google Cloud due to Google's in-house Gemini model. Despite generous financial incentives from AWS, the startup chose Google. Elevate Your Investing Strategy: Take advantage of TipRanks Premium at 50% off! While AWS still makes more than double the revenue of Google Cloud and has long been the go-to provider for startups, Google has closed the gap by offering faster models, better developer tools, and easier account setups. Startups like Nectar Social and Pear Health Labs now rely on Google Cloud for tasks that require advanced reasoning, thanks to Gemini 2.5 Pro. Google has also gone a step further by connecting startups directly with DeepMind researchers. Interestingly, even OpenAI, which usually relies on Microsoft's (MSFT) Azure, has started using Google Cloud services. Nevertheless, AWS still has other major benefits, especially for startups that need a lot of computing power or custom infrastructure. Some companies, like Haize Labs and Leash Bio, switched from Google to AWS because it gave them better access to Nvidia (NVDA) chips, faster setup for custom APIs, and more flexibility with scaling. In fact, Haize Labs needed to quickly increase its computing capacity to meet demand from a large customer, and AWS delivered within weeks. Although Google is winning over startups with its strong AI models and simplified user experience, AWS remains the top choice for companies that need raw computing power and fast scaling. Which Cloud Stock Is the Better Buy? Turning to Wall Street, , although they are virtually tied. In fact, GOOGL's price target of $202.24 per share implies 11.4% upside versus AMZN's 11.3%.
