A 60,000-ton cargo ship has been blamed for stirring the water and causing the freak waves to rip through the Spanish beach - but sideways.
Footage showed dark-coloured water speeding towards the beach before hitting a large rock in the water and rebounding back onto the sand.
A woman sunbathing on the beach could be overheard yelling: 'The rock, the rock,' as she scrambled to escape the wave.
Many people were hurt after they were smashed against rocks to the left.
The bizarre water waves, dubbed "mini-tsunami" by the beachgoers, left sunshades scattered over the sand.
A huge cargo ship - thought to be the one that caused the freak waves - was seen in the background.
One witness said afterwards on social media: 'It passed very close to the shore and caused a strong wave that swept several people away.
'People were literally thrown to the ground.'
Another blamed the cargo ship, saying: "It was a huge ship and then it caught the expansive wave like a tsunami, which absorbs the water and then expels it very forcefully.'

One of the bathers hurt had to be hospitalised.
The woman, identified only as 28-year-old Rocio, said from her hospital bed: 'I've got a broken foot and I'm waiting to be operated on.
'I was coming out of the water with a paddleboard when the wave hit me from the left and knocked me to the ground.
'I couldn't see anything and got trapped under the board. I only found out what had happened and that a ship was to blame when I got to hospital.'
She told a Spanish TV station: 'I've got to have an operation on my foot and I've got a long period of rehabilitation ahead of me.
'It's the last thing I wanted at the start of the summer.'
An investigation into the incident has been launched, with local authorities trying to find whether the cargo ship had breached rules and came too close to the beach.
The local harbour master's office said overnight, a new speed limit in the area for this type of vessel had been set at 11.5 knots to avoid another "mini-tsunami".
Last year, massive freak waves swept away boats and swamped seaside towns in Peru.
Footage captured the monster swells battering the coast of the South American country on the Pacific Ocean.

This is what happened to Heidi Orozco from Colombia, when her now fiancée, Sergio Gallego proposed to her yesterday, Thursday July 3 at Cardiff Castle. The couple travelled roughly 20 hours to reach the Welsh capital to go and see Oasis kick off their Live 25 reunion tour in Cardiff's Principality Stadium tonight, Friday July 4. Sergio decided that now was the time to pop the question to his girlfriend, although he didn't want to distract from the real reason they were in Cardiff. Sergio, an Oasis superfan was thoroughly excited for the gig. El Alamin, a town built to house cotton and tobacco workers in the 1950s, was meant to be a utopia Located just a short drive from the bustling Madrid, lies the forsaken village of El Alamin, which stands in stark contrast to the busy Spanish capital that boasts a population exceeding three million. El Alamin, translating to "the world" in Arabic, was conceived in the 1950s as an idyllic settlement to accommodate cotton and tobacco workers. Heralded as a utopia for its 150 pioneers, the town comprised only three streets, adorned with 40 houses, a tavern, post office, and a church reflecting Communist architectural design, where inhabitants lived rent-free, paying solely for their electricity. The vision for this secluded town sprang from the fourth Marquis de Comillas, Juan Claudio Güell y Churruca's mind, who aligned himself with Francisco Franco during the Spanish Civil War. However, the local farmland suffered overexploitation "to the point of exhaustion", leading to the degradation and fall of the village, as reported by the travel blog Madrid No Frills. As time went on, the residents slowly deserted the village, and by the turn of the millennium, El Alamin had been completely vacated, reports the Express. Presently, it attracts the attention of dark tourism enthusiasts keen to delve into its neglected edifices and discover the essence of life as it was roughly 75 years ago. Nevertheless, since 2021 gaining access to wander the ghostly lanes of El Alamin has grown more challenging, now requiring the consent of the property owners. Tamar Shemesh of Madrid No Frills shared that on December 18, 1957, the sister of the Marquis tied the knot in El Alamin's church amidst a gathering of Spain's crème de la crème families. Lately, El Alamin has been shrouded with increasingly "darker mysteries", she continued. One eerie myth offers an account of the "real" cause behind the desertion of the town, detailing how one shepherd led his livestock to a nearby hill. By dawn, the sheep and their guardian were found deceased, inciting terror throughout El Alamin and prompting its inhabitants to escape. Dr Philip Stone, who heads the Institute for Dark Tourism Research at the University of Central Lancashire, told the Express that enigmatic spots like El Alamin stir a longing for bygone days. "These ghost towns give us a sense of the people coming before us, but also of our own fast-moving world. When we see places that have literally stopped, it can bring a sense of nostalgia."
